What do I do when the cable is binded tight while pop up mid down
@StephenBiss
@StephenBiss Месяц назад
I hung the tent trailer roof from the ceiling of my garage to take the weight off and then began the repair. It was only then that I could take the tension off carefully. I used lots of rope and proceeded very carefully.

Hey Steve, love the video, I am about to d o the same on a Rockwood and I don't understand why you can't use the brackets that came with the unit. I am installing a Fiamma F45-260 on a 12 foot Rockwood and I see plenty of room to use the brackets that come with the unit or am I missing something. My C Channel mounts directly off the corner bead unlike the Clipper being a few inches down. The only potential issue is my LED lighting and have accounted for that and the drop off at the ends with the smaller sized Fiamma. It looks like the material used is OSB on the roof throughout, I am gonna say about a 1/2" thick. Can you please share your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

Tim, I guess it depends on what's on the exterior and inside sides of the trailer already. With both the Dutchmen and the Clipper, I played with both types of brackets and concluded that I needed to use the special adaptor because of obstructions (e.g. lift mechanism bolts), I wanted to not remove the existing awning track, and I wanted to take advantage of the strength in the existing awning track. With the Dutchmen, as you can see in the other video, I added another short piece of awning track for extra strength. Using the adaptor makes it stick out a bit further. I am now using 9 feet x Rain Guard M 03477-01-Rain Guard M (per ft.) from Fiamma to limit water dripping down. This year was the first time we really tested the new system and I am impressed with the awning. I've bought the optional ridge pole (tension rafter) but not tested it yet.

@@StephenBiss Thank You for your response, I agree with the C channel but was a little concerned that it is only being held on to the adapter with three screws which would have a lot of mechanical stress with any bumps on the road. The wall adapter has a shelf to rest on in addition to the screw on the bottom to hold it in place. We will see once the Awning arrives and I can evaluate the method of install better. I was able to order my awning directly from Canada from a shop in Quebec and I have located the brackets you mentioned as well from the UK or from a dealer in the US. I am also considering the rafter you mention to help with any pooling. Let me know if you want me keep you posted or not with the Rockwood (maybe I should do a video LOL). I saw the Fiamma on a Trailmanor trailer and got intrigued and did exactly what you said and googled if it had been done on a pop up and came across your two videos. I was also surprised to see on the wind-up campers as they are called in Australia instead of pop-ups, they are quite standard, makes you wonder why not here.

This is disgusting. How can these devices be considered as proof of anything other than how corrupt police have become and how corrupt the legal system is to allow such crap.

Question what does the lift arms sit on? I have one stuck.
@StephenBiss
@StephenBiss 3 года назад
I'm not sure what you mean by the lift arms. The part that lifts the posts is like a big spring. There are four of them, one in each corner. In my experience when the back end of mine got stuck, it was a problem with the crimp repair I had previously made where the cable is in the grease chamber. The crimp had slipped on the cable and slid to the wrong position. You probably need to take it all apart and replace the cable. Be careful though to remove any tension (I supported my roof with winches from above) before taking it all apart. Don't get injured.

Unfortunately, right after I made this video, the roof lifting mechanism collapsed on that Dutchmen tent trailer, so I never got to see it fully set up. I had raised it and lowered the roof so many times while adding the awning that somehow I weakened my repair to the roof winch cable. (See also my video on RU-vid Dutchmen Goshen lift mechanism repair.) I thought I would have to scrap that tent trailer so I removed the Fiamma, but after the season my son-in-law helped me to install a new cable and now he and my daughter are using the old tent trailer and old awning. My wife and I bought a new Coachmen tent trailer, slightly longer, and so this Spring, post pandemic, I will install the Fiamma on the new trailer. I look forward to seeing your video to learn your ideas on mounting. The European mounting brackets are challenging to those of us who are used to North American awning tracks. Should we use the Fiamma supplied brackets or alternatively order one of the special ones (I got mine from the UK on EBay) that slide into a Canadian or US awning track? It is a challenge to position the bolts on the inside so as not to interfere with canvas and trailer door. I bought extra awning track from a Toronto aluminum extruder company.

@@StephenBiss I'll be installing mine on an Australian (where I am) '96 Jayco Swan (currently have an old torn and tattered bag awning). Should be very straight forward. The surface is flat and straight and I made sure I got the right size one for the roof. I don't foresee any issues.

It is now Fall 2020 and this tent trailer has been used by my daughter and her family twice this season. The lift mechanism is very smooth in so far as the cable system is concerned but when the roof is two thirds of the way up, you need to shake the two back lift supports so that the large square tube slips through the sleeve. As long as you do that it goes up smoothly. I urge everyone to make sure you do the crimp tightly, be gentle when cranking, and never force it.
@midwesturban27

You may need to lube the hell out of your telescoping lift supports. Mine dried out and the roof would not raise at all until i sprayed a quart of silicone on it

Very useful video, thank you. Just one question, there now seems to be a slot for rain to get down between the roof of your trailer & the awning itself ? Is this the case ? Is it a problem ? Thanks. Chas

Yes, the Kit Caravan causes about a 1 cm gap. I haven't tested it yet in heavy rain. I will try to install the same awning on my new tent trailer in the Spring. I think it may depend on whether or not you can use the original trailer awning track - I couldn't with the old trailer (not straight) therefore short pieces of track added.

@@chaswarren7239 I tested your question camping with my new trailer last week. Yes, when there is a heavy rain, a small amount comes through, enough to lightly wet the screen below so we had to close the window. Prior to my next camping trip I will try to have a light plastic strip that is portable and fits into the gap.

Good video, I have same model and my cable broke in the same spot. Thanks for the upload, I need to get to work on mine. Everything looks good, one thing I would keep an eye on is friction on the cable and crank and the floor. I think that’s why the cable is fraying.
@StephenBiss
@StephenBiss 4 года назад
My son-in-law and I ultimately repaired the cable a second time, and with his help, we managed to feed the cable properly through the "L" pulley. The trick is to either not pull the original cable all the way out of the "L" pulley but cut it to use as a fish line to pull through the new cable OR do some interesting and difficult fishing then joining of two pieces of cable - one from the bottom and one from the top of the "L" pulley. You can fish a piece of scrap cable down from the top (behind the pin - between the pin and the top pulley) then from the bottom push the end of that piece towards the driver side of the trailer. Then tape that scrap piece to the new cable that you have fished through the bottom of the old pulley from the centre of the trailer towards the driver's side of the trailer. I wish I could show you pictures but you have to do most of this by feel rather than sight. Fortunately my son-in-law has a double jointed shoulder and could reach in from the top and actually see what he was doing. You're right, my original approach would have caused the cable to cut into the floor and eventually fray against steel. My daughter and son-in-law have now inherited the trailer. Try to take pictures or video to show everyone else how to do it. The "L" pulley is problematic.

Although elsewhere in Canada, and throughout the world, police generally conduct a 15 minute observation period, prior to any breath sample, in Ontario police do not follow such a practice. Police in Ontario will make sure that there has been at least 15 minutes since the subject was taken into police custody but there is no standard operating procedure requiring that the subject be kept under observation for the 15 minutes prior to each subject test. Subjects are often on the phone privately with duty counsel or locked in a cell during that time period. There is a real potential for vomit, hiccups, belches, inhalers, or foreign objects in the mouth during the period of non-observation.

This why a person cannot put anything in their mouth for 30 mins prior to providing a sample.

The question is: "How many Intoxilyzer 5000 and 5000C's are there in use by police that are not being properly maintained and are unreliable, yet produce breath test results over 100 mgs/100mls that appear normal in every way?". There are some government scientists that suggest that maintenance records, alcohol standards logs, and COBRA/ADAMS data are not relevant to preparation by the defence or a determination by a Court that the breath tests are reliable.
@StephenBiss
@StephenBiss 13 лет назад
@bacbob This instrument is owned by Stephen Biss, a lawyer in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. The instrument is in serious need of maintenance as depicted in this video. No evidentiary breath test should be performed on it because it is not reliable. Its results should not be used to convict anybody because it is not reliable. Notwithstanding this lack of reliability it passes Diagnostics checks and external Calibration checks. It will perform a full ACABA breath test that appears normal.

If you search "bisss2002" on RU-vid you will see a number of examples of the bizarre effects of RFI on Intoxilyzers. The RFI detector on the Intoxilyzer 5000 64 series was designed in the early 1980's - when police used very different radio frequencies and cell phones weren't around. Yes there is an RFI detector in the breath tube but the antenna and circuitry don't work with every frequency of RFI. Shielding frequently has gaps due to post-factory maintenance or police opening of the cover.
@StephenBiss
@StephenBiss 15 лет назад
The experiment was for the purpose of determining if RFI from a cell phone would 1) be detected by the instrument as RFI, trigger an RFI Inhibit flag, and shut the instrument down and 2) be compromised in its reliability by cell phone radio frequency interference. It is apparent that some cell phones, when transmitting, compromise the reliability of some Intoxilyzer results without triggering an RFI Inhibit flag. Police need to preclude cell phone use in police stations.
