Thanks for a very helpful video. I just finished a Gold dead front sight, I have to cut the barrel on my Springfield V16. I have completely rebuilt this 45 Super pistol and it is my baby. I have a Bridgeport mill but always sweat a but when turning on the mill.
Hi, and 1000 thanks for the video. I live in Europe and I have no access to this kind of guns, or others. However, my interest in guns is almost as old as myself, and I am 59 now. I only have a few 1911 replicas with poor realism, but it is what I can own and afford, as ilegal matters are not in my way of life. And I want to build some 1911s, and I am facing se problems. So this video was good to watch. Thank you.
Great material but I was fairly repulsed by listening to him snorting and snuffling then swallowing the whole time. Would like to see these redone when you do not have a cold/congestion.
Great series and Caspian also has the integrated plunger tube option. My number one tool about 30 years ago should’ve been a gunsmith 1911 manual. I ruined a few 1911s starting off due to my ignorance, number 2 should’ve been a good vice and a work bench, instead of a coffee table, much more efficient working on a part on a stable surface 😂. Thanks for the tips I’ll use them.
OMG!!! You need to be using a dial indicator on the tail stock Quill to accurately set the depth to be reamed. Straight walled rimless cases set head space against the front edge of the cartridge case. Head space is a critical measurement in all cartridge's. An accurate chamber gauge is also necessary to obtain specified depth. I know .45 ACP is a low pressure round, but some degree of precision is still very important!!! Tim
Also my barrel hood came in perfect had to file down the feet for me to get the slide pin in but now it doesn’t drop down enough to rack the slide, what is missing? I know it’s hard to tell without seeing but hoping you may have an answer for me…
Could be contacting the back face of the barrel feet on the frame before the link can swing all the way out. Might dykem the back of the barrel feet and see if its hitting.
Thank you for this informative video. I'm going to order a file to hand cut a dovetail and now I know how to measure to ensure I get the correct angled file. I'll be cutting the dovetail in a Pietta 1858 Remington .44 C&B revolver and I'm installing the front sight from an 1873 Winchester rifle. That way it's a drift adjustable front sight that's somewhat period correct.
Dude, I just binged all of your videos. It was great to see just about the entire fitting process from start to finish*. I would love to see how the finished product turned out Cerakote and all. The build videos definitely are inspiring me to go out and try building a 1911 myself.
How come you don't have a video for cutting the lower foot with the cutter? When do you stop cutting, when the safety engages or when the back of the slide is even with the frame? If you cut until the safety engages how do you match the slide to the frame as it sticks out the back?
Once you get your bushing to the point where you can just get it to turn where it should be with a light turn of the bushing wrench why dont you hand lap it in with compound.
Thanks for making the series. I'm on my 4th build and I still have questions at times and the vids already on here are few and far between that show proper explaination so any added ones are appreciated.
Thanks. This is the first video that went through the calculations in detail, specifically the amount to take off the "right" part of the hood. Most videos just calculate the amount you remove from the first side of the hood and don't explain the second step
Not being rude but putting your finger inside the bushing to feel for sharp edges BEFORE the lathe stops spinning completely is none too smart. One piece of sharp metal sticking up and you’d ripped al the way around your finger tip. Basic safety and you as a machinist should know that. Just my opinion, otherwise, good vid butt get too blowing your nose, sounds like shit constantly sucking goobers down your throat. Allergies or???
How do you measure existing dovetails an how do you find out what different guns use? So if I have a Star BM and I want to replace the rear sight, how do I measure the dovetail and how do I find out who else used that size so maybe ... a Beretta used that size and there are TONS of rear sight choices for a Beretta and now I can use that. Or maybe it's an H&K or whatever.
