I know that I'm probably in a minority but "Crisis? What Crisis?" is my favourite Supertramp album and this brilliant track is part of the reason for my opinion. I reckon that this could have been a sizeable hit single in the UK if it had been released, given that in those days we had a reasonably discerning record-buying public who would dare to buy ambitious, sophisticated, unconventional singles such as Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", "I'm Mandy, Fly Me" and "Rubber Bullets" (10 c.c.), "Sylvia" and "Hocus Pocus" (Focus), "Live And Let Die" and "Band On The Run" (Wings), "Music" (John Miles), "This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us" (Sparks) and many others which broke the standard formula for hit singles. There are many other examples, I'm sure. Perhaps commenters might be kind enough to reply with examples of other unorthodox hit singles from that era?
My best friend told me to listen to this album in my early 20's to always help with loneliness. A big help even today. We are all the every day man. Excellent job by the band to the The bones
It's like double cream for music......just dam gorgeous. The way the vocalist wraps his tongue round the words and those beautiful strings. I'm wondering if that's a Prophet 5 or 10 a la what Tony banks used to use in the Genesis setup. Then the little guitar breaks with Mike's signature arpeggios and subtlety. Beautiful. I fell in love with this when it was first released and like another poster, it still makes me go all weak at the knees 🙂
Hands down, one of the best albums ever. I bought it the day it was released when I was 11. I turned 61 an hour ago. Wow, it's been 50 years?? I just realized I'm on my wife's youtube account lol. She was born in 1979
Definitely top 25 record all time. Serving notice they were a force to contend with for years to come! What a library by this band, Breakfast in America may be a top 25 record as well! Awesome band, with impactful lyrics & great music.
I remember hearing the strings sound on this when it came out in the 80s, and I thought it was the best strings sound I ever heard. I wonder what was used for it. Anyway, a stunning song!
I believe its a Prophet 5 or 10. Its what Tony Banks used to use on the Genesis works. it was a fully programmable (Dr Who style) synth available in the 70's and Pink Floyd used it too. But very expensive so the less successful bands couldnt access due to the barrier to entry cost (many thousands for one keyboard). I might be wrong about this but I was very tuned into Genesis at this time and that keyboard was famous.....the strings really sound like it on this ie the warmth and resonance, depth etc.
Your list is interesting and everyone has their own opinion where they rank songs from this incredible band…However nothing from Two Against Nature or Everything Must Go…These 2 Steely Dan albums are highly disregarded for some reason and both albums are really good
