Hi Anwat. The thicker the item is, the thicker the foam needs to be. For example, if a handgun is 1.5 inches thick at it's widest point, the foam on both sides of the press should be at least 1 inch thick (2 inches total) to allow them to completely wrap around the gun's contours on both sides when being pressed. This allows them to push the heated thermoform plastic into the various recesses to fully cover (form around) the item. Let us know if you need more help!
We used 1" Xtreme Form foam on the outer and 1" Maxx form for the inner. Here's a link. Let us know if you need more help. www.holstersmith.com/vcom/molding-presses-foam-molding-foams-c-548_524_810.html
Heres a tip most channels dont mention. If your gun came with a plastic carrying case, sometimes they have foam in them, just flip the foam over to the flat side and use the carrying case as the press. Makes it very easy. Sometimes the case isnt big enough, but usually it is.
Be careful trying something like this. Most carrying case foam will melt to the heated Kydex. Also, a thin plastic carrying case will deflect too much when you press it. If you're going to make a homemade press, use a minimum of 1/2 inch plywood to eliminate deflection. We use 3/4 inch on our wooden taco press. Read all about foams and presses here: www.holstersmith.com/vcom/tools-molding-presses-foam-c-548_524.html
@@KnifeKits Definitely true. Ive made about 6 holsters with carrying cases, another dozen with a nicer press. Never had any carrying case foam melt on me, but theres a massive amount of variance in that foam, and the carrying cases certainly do flex.
@@KnifeKits the stuff I use for my trainers is terrible for holster making. Trying to offer some minimalist holsters along with them. I’ll support you guys ordering these as durable as they seem. I’ll wear gloves to be safe.
Very nice holster nicely laid out, cut, drilled, riveted and belt sanded, sanded, sanded and did I say sanded. I've seen paint dry quicker than that. Edit out about 6 or 7 min. Of belt sander and you have a WINNER!!!!!
You won't scratch your gun if you take your time with the prep work and molding. If you're only making a single holster, a live weapon is perfectly fine to use. If you're doing several holsters for that model, we recommend a molding prop just to be safe.
I am looking to get into making my own holsters. Can you do a video on the retention jigs i see them in alot of videos but no videos on just those jigs
Hi Paul. Thank you for the suggestion. We get questions on creating retention all of the time. I'll add the video topic to our list. If you need any help using one right now, feel free to call us and we'll walk you through over the phone.
Thanks for the video. I just made my first kydex sheath and it turned out pretty nice overall. The one thing I had some difficulty with was getting the right retention. If you could make a video demonstrating where the retention comes from on a knife and how to adjust it, that would be awesome! Thanks for the great products and content.
That's a good idea. It's not as straight forward as it seems. I've added "knife sheath retention" to our future video list. That's a topic that we should definitely cover. Thank you!
They will only close and open in one direction. If these are your first pull-the-dot safety snaps, check out this video and see if it helps... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-roZOLSdxr_U.html Please let us know if you need more help. Alex
It can be removed, but it may leave adhesive residue behind. Once you put it on the holster, and it has some time for the adhesive to semi-cure, it's pretty stuck. If you're going to remove it, do it sooner rather than later.
I haven't even watched two minutes of the video and it is already more informative than the SDI video I am going off of. That is why I'm searching the web for better videos. I'm so stressed out over this class when it should be fun.
It's a .250 post (www.holstersmith.com/vcom/slotted-post-steel-black-oxide-finish-pack-p-3722.htmland a .4375 screw (www.holstersmith.com/vcom/phillips-oval-head-4375-300-1ea-p-6704.html) Let us know if you need more help!
Nice Stache. I highly approve good sir. Making my first holster today! Full kydex followed by hybrid if it goes well. I have only done full leather thus far so this will be exciting!
They mount with 1/4 inch holes through your KYDEX holster or sheath, similar to the FOMI clip on this video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ixr5JuxUqEA.htmlsi=luUtM4MudRoFniHk If you still have questions about installing them after watching the video above, reach out to us at 877-255-6433 and ask for Robbie. He can walk you through it on the phone.
@@KnifeKits Thank you. Just created acct and purchased. Also Subbed. Question: I bought a Safariland 6354RDS in what they call "Ranger Green" which is actually 100% without question OD Green. So my intent is to disassemble the holster wrestle off their cordura wrap and install yours. Any tip on the removal? I wish you were in south Florida, I'd have you do it. Thanks again.
About the only way I know is with a heat gun. However, with medium-high heat, you risk deforming the holster. I wouldn't add much more than low heat to soften the adhesive. Thank you for your business. Welcome to the addiction! Alex 🙂
Will it make that click sound when the gun goes into the holster? I'm not sure what in the process causes the holster to have that. I ordered one that doesnt do that but most of the ones I've ordered do.
That "click" sound is something that we all love. In order to get it, you have to create "retention points" in the holster shell. As an example of a retention point, when you look at the video title image on this video, you'll see an indention within the trigger guard area of the holster. This is generally found on both sides of this type of holster. It is created there by design (by the foam pressing the thermoform material into the cavity caused by the trigger guard), and this creates one of the major retention points on all handgun holsters. The kit comes with adjustable retention assemblies that allow you to tighten (or loosen) the "pinch" along the holster seam to create additional friction on the handgun. Don't worry, once you make your first one, it'll all make sense. If you follow the video steps, you can't go wrong. Let us know if you need more help!!!😃
Ha ha, good question... It should be pointed out that we're using the IWB straps to create an OWB horizontal carry setup. Thank you for pointing that out.
Tek-lok's have a square mounting grid pattern. Each hole is 0.20 inches in diameter and 0.75 inches on center. As long as your eyelet hole spacing is a multiple of 0.75 inches you're good to go. This diagram shows it best: www.holstersmith.com/vcom/images/bld-tch_tek-lok_cad_1500.jpg Let us know if you need more help!
They're not scotchbrite...exactly, but similar. 🙂Here's what you're looking for: www.knifekits.com/vcom/sandingpolishing-flap-wheels-c-1072_1004_1005.html
I don't see the green ones on the site , just the bright orange. So do i assume it's just the color that was changed and not the material it's made with?
Yes, they only changed the color. The material they make them from is the same. They still had some green models left when the color change was made. They're on sale here: www.holstersmith.com/vcom/specials-c-916.html
Do you intend to make bigger sheets? 1 ft x 1 ft is a tiny bit too small for my intended usage.. And how about Europe? do you have a retailer or at least ship to EU ? :P
Hi Daniel. We can do just about any custom size. However, you'll want to contact our sales/support team to discuss the dimensions that you need as there might be a delay on production, depending on the size. Also, we ship worldwide. Anywhere in the EU is no problem at all. We ship there daily. Thank you for watching, and let us know if you need more help! Alex
