Great to see. My grandfather worked for IH in the 20s and 30s, my dad worked there (City Road South Melbourne) and parents met there, I did some uni holiday work there in 1975 and there were still workers there who had been there since pre-war and recalled my grandfather; I’m named after him

Roads with single lane wooden bridges are still with us in 2024 but not on main roads like the long narrow wooden bridge at Bulga near Singleton on the Putty road. There's another near Dungog and yet another south of Bombala on the road to Bega and Eden. There are long single steel road bridges at Bingara and Barraba. Getting off the motorway roads onto the back roads is a bit of a time warp in places when it comes to road infrastructure in 2024.

The unfortunate thing about successive governments since those days has lacked the foresight of those days. Roads have gradually fallen behind, and face increasing demand. Road Trains are here to stay and will only get larger. Our rail system has been destroyed by abuse and a lack of fortitude from Governments to restructure them. Much of the state by state rail network has been torn up and is long gone!. Rail now just links capital cities. This has caused a big burden on rural road networks that have to solely rely on road transport to move grain from inland storage to our rural and capital city ports. The foresight of the 70s and 80s of governments was to say the very least, negligent!

I love the way film units used to talk down to we Australians.(Melbourne 2024).This is only passingly about The Hume Highway 31.p.s. I also think that General Tax Revenue should be sacked on sight. p.p.s. In 2020 going from Melbourne to Canberra necessitated going via the Yass By-pass and onto what can only be thought of as a 'B minus' basic road.

My parents always said that the 1950's were the best years..the war was over, there was plenty of work, great music and fashion and the Australian dream of owning your own home (and car) was achievable 😊

That road based transport system will sure work out in australia's future! The same propaganda could be presented today. Efficient and wide spread mass transit transport systems would have been great if they had a fair part of 70 years of investment that roads have seen. Instead we continue to worship at the foot of a poorly scaling, dirty, inefficient and expensive road system.

Propaganda to introduce a Tax against our Lawful Commonwealth Constitution Act 1901 as proclaimed and Gazetted without a vote or referendum. He said we will all agree. That's not the case, it is to be paid by minerals that form consolidated revenue. There is no such thing as local government. That referendum failed. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1988_Australian_referendum_(Local_Government)#:~:text=The%20Constitution%20Alteration%20(Local%20Government,held%20on%203%20September%201988.

I can still remember how we would open these types of gates with a 'check-key' system at the old Mt. Druitt (NSW) station back in the early 1960's. See at 10:42 in the video

The Monty Python skit where they announce in unison, ''No Poofters,'' comes to mind... And no Aborigine hucksters and malcontents, either, as there are now, one moment proudly declaring that they are one of us, ordinary Australians, and then the next, that they are Aborigines ( depending how much money they can extort from the system) Ahhh, I wish I were alive then, so BEAM ME, NOT UP, BUT BACK! , SCOTTY

I was a little surprised to realise that those kids getting on the school bus in 1957 or '58 were about the same age as me, & I was franticly identifying the vehicles & some of the locations. I got most of them right too, including long forgotten names like Foden & AEC trucks. As a apprentice mechanic in the '60's I worked on many of them too. Ahhhh, memories.

My late Father worked for International Havester in Australia. He worked twice for them in early 60s then through the 70s. Worked in the Lidcombe NEW South Wales site on Parramatta Rd. My brother and I have fond memories especially when Christmas parties were held each year for the kids of the employees. He was a Master Bodybuilder and had many apprentices come through under his supervision. Miss International Havester in Australia.

Road courtesy has slipped away in recent years, every man and woman for themselves, sod the other driver. Road rage incidents rapidly rising. Just love those old cars in the video, collectors items today! yes, they spent billions on the Hume Highway, pity that an equal amount wasn't spent on our railways, Sydney-Melbourne trains still running on steam train era conditions and track in 2024...🤔

IH was a pretty popular dozer and they were strong. They started the diesel engine on gasoline and switched over to diesel. It had spark plugs, a small carburetor, and an extra intake manifold, and a magneto type distributor. They had an ingenius mechanism for isolating the diesel and gasoline systems from each other. That same mechanism also was set up to raise the compression, by decreasing the volume of the cylinder head part of the compression chambers, when it switched to diesel. I always thought it was super cool. I have an old, cable operated, around 1949, TD 14 that is not running now. It started really well, when it was running. I would like to get it running, again, but I am not physically able to climb around on it, or even run it any more. Getting old is tough, but it beats the alternative, I keep telling myself.

The population of Australia in 1957 was about 9.5 million, yet the commentator was expecting the entire continent (similar size to the USA) to have complex series of paved roads. Comparing Australia to Europe, when those countries have larger populations and smaller distances to their borders is ridiculous.

Propaganda supporting roads construction over railways. The railways of that time were more than capable of carrying the freight needs without the destruction of roads by the weight of the trucks. Same thing today...the roads are broken because the freight task is mainly on trucks, not trains.

An old video of the problem of road building and maintenance in the 1950’s.....Nothing has changed, we are still confronted with narrow unsealed roads, potholes, single lanes and never ending spot repairs. If the revenue collected from motorists nationwide was used for the purpose intended for just a couple of years, we would not be faced with this ongoing problem. The truth is however, that just a small percentage goes to new roads and repairs. The balance goes into general revenue to fund a myriad of other government programmes and initiatives, whilst registration, fuel excise, GST, tolls and fines keep increasing.
