The M4 iPad Pro and macOS really should be an option moving forward with an iPad that is now definitely a Mac computer in all but the operating system. What do you think?
Let's face it, the "Pro" in iPad Pro should stand for something and that something would be the ability to run professional software and apps that are available on macOS.
Maybe Apple held back some info during the release event and maybe we get some favourable news at WWDC next month and macOS on iPad soon after. Or, we might see flying pigs 😆
This video is a shorter version of one that I recorded earlier, which had more detail, background and justification for what I ultimately said in this video. The best solution: Touch functionality for Mac OS

i love my ipad pro for one thing: it is the best drawing and painting device ever made. the only thing they need to do to perfect it is make it either 16 or 24 inches and put it on a stand. I sometimes carry my ipad pro to the coffeeshop and it is great for working on a table and drinking coffee but 99 percent of the time it is stationary on my desk and I used it to draw. i don't think apple understands it is crap at almost everything but drawing. the fact that people buy a $300 keyboard for it is proof that you don't need an ipad. You need a macbook. I have no idea what they should do with the os. I only care about drawing.

I know a niche demographic wants to dual boot macOS on iPadOS, but if you look at it from Apple's viewpoint, you will see it as a zero-sum game. Why: 1/ Why change a business model that is working great and surviving in two difficult, high-competitive markets (PCs and tablets)? Change for change's sake; ask LG how that went! 2/ What is Apple's upside? It likely will not increase demand, push sales away from their Macbook line, and make it more difficult for shareholders to meet profit targets. Look at the iPhone mini, which sold more than most Android phones yet failed Apple's core economic viability test-profitability. 3/ Forewarned is to be forearmed. Creating a hybrid, like W8, MS attempts to become a player in the tablet market, ending in abysmal comprehensive failure and another missed opportunity by MS to become relevant. That disaster is enough to steer the ship around the iceberg. 4/ Technical issues: a/ Most iPad Pros only have 8GB of RAM, and we know that this is derided on YT comment sections and by creators. It is hypocrisy to say it is acceptable now. There is no 32GB option for iPad Pros. The 256GB models only have one NAND SSD so swap would be reduced. b/ IO could be better on an iPad. c/ Battery life on an iPad is significantly less than that of an MB Air. The battery would wear faster. d/ 11-inch macOS would look horrid, so you must use it on a single display. Just buy a Mac Mini if that is what you need. macOS is not a touch UI. e/ No fan; pro apps will throttle faster than an MB Air. f/ Slower sequential transfer speeds on an iPad. g/ Only the base M4; no M4 Pro or Max chip. 5/ The price: a 13-inch 1TB/16GB iPad Pro with keyboard and pen costs £2400, while I can get an MB Pro 14 M4 Pro 1TB/18GB for £2100! Buying an iPad Pro as an alternative to the MB Pro makes no sense. 6/ There are good reasons why Samsung does not dual-boot Windows on its Galaxy Tab S line and ditched Linux on Android. They are bad business models. Why do people expect Apple to do it and never complain that rivals are identical? There must always be a balance between what consumers want and what is viable for Apple, et al. iPads running macOS is simply a bad idea for Apple. I worked this out a decade ago and have the idealistic plan of having both-no compromises and not waiting for that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, as it doesn't and will never exist.

iPads do not need Mac OS, just need to beef up iPad os. iPad os is the best touch based os by far. They just need to add a better file system, a fully featured web browser, and add Xcode for devs. Then just keep upgrading things as they have been, better pro apps, etc. nobody that enjoys their iPad wants an iPad that’s like a surface. Just a bloated os, that isn’t fully a pc, and isn’t fully a touch device. Let’s see what Apple does this wwdc. I already own a 12.9” M1 Pro, and don’t ever need to use a pc. It does everything I need it to and then some. I’m waiting for the next iPad pros, and will be upgrading then, but man do the m4’s make my mouth water.😂

Yes, I’d be up for that, just the simple ability to run Mac software on the iPad. Here’s the thing. macOS runs NATIVELY on iPad Pros with an M chip. You don’t need a “translation layer.” I bet you could load macOS onto an iPad tomorrow if the bootloader was unlocked. I can understand why containerized virtualization for individual apps would be nice, but I would still prefer to have the macOS backend - because iPadOS is so limiting. The answer here is either Dual Boot, or a macOS touch forward UI mode. Apple wont do this even though it’s best for the consumer

@@treelydowd1362 Yes, absolutely. Give the end user a choice of both operating systems and let them choose. I get that a lot of iPad users have no interest in Mac and that's totally understandable and fine. So just give the end user the option, those who don't want it don't have to use it and those who want it will be kept happy. Great video David. A dual operating tablet/laptop hybrid is something I've always wanted. It has been done in the past. I'd need to search for the names of the tablets, but there's been a few from China that let you dual boot Android and Windows. If I remember right, a hard restart was required rather than a quick switch. That is changing though. Lenovo announced this year at CES that one of their 2 in 1 Thinkpads will be Android and Windows. The closest to what we need right now is Samsung's Tab range. Following our discussion last week, I've been down the tablet rabbit hole, swaying between buying the new Apple iPad Pro, the last generation of iPad Pro or an Android tablet such as the Samsung Tab S9, S9+ or S9 Ultra. What I like about the Samsung Tab range is that when you connect the book cover keyboard, it instantly switches to Samsung DEX and you can use it like a laptop. I actually lost out on an eBay auction for an S9 Ultra with keyboard cover. Perhaps I'll win the next one 😊 I'm still considering my options though. I think the combination of Android and Dex is closer to what I want; but I also know Dex is limited too. This is an area where macOS might be better in some situations as it supports Davinci Resolve (which, admittedly, isn't perfect on iPad). Another option is a Windows 2 in 1. I've always like the Surface Pro range, but you just don't get the tablet experience with it. Keep up the great work Dave 👍 Kevin
@DavidHarry
@DavidHarry 4 месяца назад
Alright, Kevin. Yes, absolutely, there’s already been precedent for a dual boot tablet. I also remember seeing some of those Chinese tablets that dual booted Android and Windows. I done a longer version of this video which I linked to in the description and will put it live later (but won’t have it notify the subscribers). Even in that version there were a lot of things I missed out and one of those was DeX. As you know I’m a massive DeX fan and have been using for it ages. Now I know it’s strictly not a dual OS. However, DeX mode itself, even if it is a re-skinned version and different kernel (I think) of what’s already running on the device, is as close to a “desktop” OS as you can get. So Samsung have already proven that the concept works. Plus. Apple themselves introduced Stage Manager, which in my opinion has been dreadful, or at least it does not work for me as a “desktop” UI, it’s too flaky and it’s nowhere as well thought out as DeX is. So if they’ve been prepared to do Stage Manager then they are already half way there to macOS anyway. I was going to mention Stage Manager as their half arsed attempt but didn’t want the FanBoys getting all bent out of shape 😆 For functionality, Samsung win out over Apple with Android/DeX vs iPadOS/Stage Manger and if I were coming at this fresh with no previous attachment to either main mobile OS, I’d go Samsung. However, as I’ve chosen to lay in Apple’s bed and have become drawn into their ecosystem, mostly due to my Mac computers. I’m basically f@@ked now 😆 That said, my Samsung Ultra phones get a lot of use, even if not as my phone, and I now use my S24 Ultra over my iPhone 15 Pro Max and even my M2 iPad Pro for gaming. And that’s even before DeX is mixed into the equation because the Samsungs just seem to be better in mirrored mode as well, at least for Warzone Mobile, which is super important 😆 I too like the Surfaces and a dual boot version of one of those with the right operating systems would be awesome. However, and again, I’m on Mac now and simply want my Mac software on the iPad Pro under macOS. Because, yes, there is a huge differences between running software under macOS compared to iPadOS and as you’ve mentioned, Resolve is painful under iPadOS. I have it in my Mac and iPads and aside from testing certain things with it, I immediately disliked it on iPadOS even though it’s near enough the exact same app as on macOS. Even under Stage Manager on a 32” monitor, you can’t go full screen 16:9, it just centres the Resolve UI as 3:2 pillarbox in the centre of the 16:9 screen. Plus you can’t scale things properly certain functions and buttons are hard to get at. No surprise really, as Resolve’s UI has not been optimised for touch. Just another reason for macOS on iPad. Cheers, Dave.

@@DavidHarry Alright Dave I've not been able to use stage manager as I'm still rocking the OG 10.5" iPad Pro, which doesn't support it. From what I remember, it seemed more like a glorified task manager for grouping apps. You'll definitely upset the fan boys if you complain about it in your video though 😂 I've tried Samsung DEX, but not used it much. When I tested it with the fold, I didn't have as much need to use it as the fold was so good at multitasking. It would be different with a tablet and keyboard though as I'd be more inclined to use it when travelling. Ultimately, everyone of these solutions had prod and cons, so we have to make compromises until a true all in one device ID released. I'm still using an iPhone 15 pro max, but thankfully not tied into any one particular eco system. So I'm perhaps a bit more flexible with which direction I go. I've definitely not ruled out iPads though. 👍 Thanks. Kevin

@DavidHarry 4 месяца назад
@@KevinMuldoon Alright, Kevin. I use DeX a lot with my S24 Ultra and it’s awesome. I have the original DeX Station, which is essentially a bespoke USB C dock. So I dock my Ultra and have it connected to my main 32” monitor, mouse, keyboard, wired internet and game controller. Using the Ultra and DeX in 4K on a big monitor is very close to using a desktop. In fact, DeX is better than ChromeOS and Chromebooks as far as I’m concerned, as it is a desktop OS and works great in a monitor. For someone who only does light processing on a computer and the usual daily stuff. DeX could easily be all they need for a desktop home setup. Which means that you have a boss phone, S24 Ultra or any DeX capable phone/tablet, and when you are at home you dock it and have a good general purpose PC. For someone like you or me, we would need powerful PCs for what we do but the likes of you and I aren’t typical users. Most people simply don’t have the processing requirements that we do, so something like DeX is a serious viability for a home computer setup. Anyway, I’m not talking to you anymore about this stuff because I’m getting pissed off 😆 It’s times like this that I wish I wasn’t balls deep into Apple’s BS 🤣 As I’d be having a lot more fun with my Samsung sh1t 😆 If you end up looking for a used 11” base model M1 or M2 iPad Pro then give me a shout. I’ll be selling mine after this week, they are in mint condition and I have these nice metal magnetic desktop stands for them and some cases etc. If you buy an old stock new M2 or M1 then take a look at this stand by Benks, it’s awesome ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rx52NSLKz4k.htmlsi=DY-IswEzE6fxpT8y I also show the other stand in this video which isn’t quite as flexible (this is the one I’m selling with my iPads). I’m going to see if this Benks stand still works with the M4, although, I doubt it because I think Apple have moved the magnets in the new M4 case. @@ruschein Hi, Johannes. I also suspected that the kernel would be the same. Whatever the difference is in UI, permissions etc. are. They were supposed to release a bigger iPad called the iPad ultra which was supposed to be 14 in. But it never came out and if we were getting it It would have already been released with these iPads. So if it is coming out it probably won't come out until next year

@@williammclean6594 I personally don’t like small screens either for video editing and music production. My MacBook has a 16” screen and that’s too small for me, I have it connected to at least one 32” monitor when I’m composing or editing. However, a lot of people are fine with small screens, which is where macOS on the iPad Pros could work well for certain people. Cheers, Dave.

IDT the dual boot option makes sense. Integrating the iPad OS functionality into MacOS wouldn't be that difficult. And perhaps Apple can control that option to have it selected at the time of purchase, you select either IPad OS or Mac OS, likely pay more for the latter. Also, the could limited the option to the highest end configurations (minimum 1 TB drive, the 10 core processor, when sold with the keyboard. They would need to install a driver for the touch screen interface. I'm just not sure what the point would be of buying a super expensive iPad to run a full laptop OS while having only one USB C port. Also, the MacOS would cut into battery power significantly as the OS is a bigger load in memory with a number of background operations keeping the processor busy. This would defeat the purpose of having a tablet device to a large extent. MS has tried running lite versions of Windows on SUrface tablets for years and toyed with using different processors. This also made the OS specifically for operating a tablet and ended up having to back out of some functionality because of user complaints. I believe Apple has witnessed MS's fiasco with Windows 8 and Surface and decided to keep the iPads from becoming Macbooks via MacOS because of that. It is an interesting nich novelty at best that would suit a few power users, but ALWAYS there would be fuller functionality with MacBook and at a lower price. Apple is about designing a product with the intention of selling millions of them. I just doesn't see an army of techies driving volume sales for such a device. So that is why Apple has never done it.

And there is my point I suppose, choice. You are of course right, many people will have absolutely no interest in running macOS on their iPad Pro, including yourself maybe. Many people don’t their want their iPad Pro to become a “proper” and for some people, a “complicated” computer, and that is totally understandable. For example, my mother uses her iPad every day but would never understand the use of macOS. However, giving the end user the choice, would be the way to keep everyone happy. Cheers, Dave.

I forget what it's called but Samsung tablets have a function where you can go to desktop mode that mimics PC. Apple could do that. But I think the reason will never see that because Apple thinks they would lose money. Because if the iPad is basically a macbook then there would be no use in making MacBooks anymore because they would basically be a laptop. It even has the keyboard that you can attach to it. They would want to make as many products as possible so they want to sell you a MacBook and an iPad. They would cut their profits in half. People have been asking for this for 10 years and they haven't done anything

True. My parents, in the 70s at the time, never used a PC as they could not connect with them. I bought both of them iPads, and they use them every day. This is the truth about iPads, and what Apple marketing is really saying: it is a replacement PC for some, but not for everyone and since my parents started using iPads and they have the Pros, just for browsing, reading, card games, word puzzled, iMessage, etc., they have opened up a new pathway as they hit their 80s. Having the M4 means longevity, not necessarily for "pro" use; it's future-proofing, and Apple has stated this. Why wouldn't anyone want the fastest chip Apple sells?

How to revitalize the IPAD in general with the M4 chip and above. They could create a dual boot manager system on the IPAD that would allow the user to select which fully boot OS environment that the user wanted to use when booting up the IPAD and then allow the user at boot time to select MAC OS or IPAD OS And each booted environment would have all of the respective app's which belong to their respective OS environments when booted. This way you lose no MAC OS or IPAD OS application or system functionality. And the user could use the new IPAD OS keyboard/mouse on the MAC OS when the MAC OS is booted; which means Apple would also need to make sure that the New IPAD keyboard/mouse has compatible drivers for the MAC OS environment. And the MAC OS would have bluetooth capability for bluetooth device. They would sell like hotcakes. So much so that it would revitalize Apple. I’ve ordered the new iPad Pro 11” to replace my aging iPad Pro 10.5”. I think you’re correct with a Dual Boot system, however I’d say if you want MacOS you should be able to download MacOS (for free), if you don’t want it then don’t download it (free up your memory). Agree it should only be able to dual boot if in the Magic Keyboard or has a keyboard / mouse attached. Even if they only allowed you to download MacOS on the 1TB & 2TB versions because of the extra Ram (16GB over 8GB) also having the 10 cores and maybe the additional hard drive space, I could expect that (should of told everyone at release, so if you wanted dual boot you could of bought the correct version). Will Apple do it, at first I think ‘NO’ that will take sales away from Mac; however if it’s true that sales are declining in both Mac & iPad, maybe giving the option to be able to combine both is a possibility and more so if they force you to buy the higher specification version plus a Magic Keyboard, they have then sold a product which cost more than a Mac. My MacBook Pro is over 14yrs old, I rarely use it, so have no intention of replacing it but if Apple did dual boot on my new iPad I would buy a Magic Keyboard & Pencil etc so Apple would earn more from me than if they didn’t.
@DavidHarry
@DavidHarry 4 месяца назад
I totally agree with everything you’ve said. Yes, there’s a potentially sticky situation of iPad Pro with macOS maybe stopping sales of macOS. However, as you said, adding extra RAM/storage and Magic Keyboard to an iPad Pad can be a lot more expensive than certain MacBooks. In which case, can Apple really lose? Plus, if it meant a sale of an Apple where there wouldn’t have been a sale, again, Apple don’t lose. One thing’s for sure, there must be someone at Apple thinking about these things. Cheers, Dave.

Sorry to tread on binning-gate again, but this is now a solution for Apple to maximise yield from each wafer and reduce e-waste. You will find that the iPhone 16 will have a binned A18 chip, and the iPhone 16Pro will have a non-binned A18Pro version. This has been Apple's roadmap for a few years, and it will finally be able to come together now that everything has fallen into place. This does not mean that the iPhone will soon be running macOS.
@DavidHarry
@DavidHarry 4 месяца назад
Andy. I already made my point very clear about that, it’s not the binning that I have a problem with, it’s the use of binning to create two different processors on a platform that has historically been unified for its processing. I’d love there to be only a 10% difference but for the heavy multi-threaded tasks that rely on the performance cores, losing 25% of those cores must be worse than 10% overall, as the 6 efficiency cores are a lot lower in the total summing of the processing abilities. I brought this up in my auto-deleted comment on your previous video. I don't see this crossover happening. If you showed me a leak of Apple making an AMOLED Mac monitor, then I'd have hope. If they had another product that actually would support touch and/or the Apple Pencil on Mac, then I could see it happening. If I saw a leak for an Apple iPad dock, I could see this happening. I can't see them allowing crossover iPad/MacOS without a way of using it to monetize new hardware. Then you've got the issue with consumer confusion, because this would need to be limited to M series iPads. iPad 10's couldn't do it, iPad Mini's couldn't and even the previous iPad Air A14 Bionic would be excluded. Granted Apple isn't above consumer confusion. They're selling 4 Apple Pencils at the same time and the next Air is thicker and heavier than the next Pro, but the next Air does support the Pro Pencil. Apple is also very protective of their ecosystem. They don't even like Epic bypassing their store using Safari. I can imagine all the vulnerabilities of allowing a dual boot OS. I'm sure there's some expert with Terminal commands that can't wait to open up iPad OS. I'll be happy with Metal Performance Monitor on all the M series iPads with iPadOS 18. That is at least realistic.
@DavidHarry
@DavidHarry 4 месяца назад
Alright, Mike. Yes, it's very unlikely, and for all the obvious reasons, but it won't stop me from bitching about it now that the iPad Pro is basically a Mac. You're right, if there were other signs of potential crossover with Mac, such as touch screens etc. Then maybe macOS on iPad wouldn't be so far fetched. Now while I totally agree that Apple have always had their plans and direction pretty much set in concrete before they do anything or make a new release. I'm not sure that even they know exactly what's going on with their direction and their product definitions at the moment. Putting "Pro" Mac hardware in a "consumer" mobile device, as far as I'm concerned, sends out mixed messages. At the very least, it blurs the lines. I get that it's easier to fabricate the same silicon across product lines and it makes things cleaner and cheaper (for Apple). And moving Mac to ARM with Apple Silicon was always going to end up with amalgamations at some point. But the whole thing is now starting to feel very incestuous and I think that it's Apple themselves who are the culprits for the confusion. I mean, I'm a consumer and they've got me confused as f..k 😆 On the point of the Epic thing. I'm not actually a fan of Apple, just certain products and I'm obviously very vocal about certain things. However, I totally agree with Apple's stance on the whole Epic thing. While my main reasoning is that the App Store should be safe and the hardware should run through it, or Apple certified downloads etc. And yes, Apple make a lot of money in commissions etc. But how many apps and games do you think only made it because they were on the App Store? You don't hear anyone with no success bitching about Apples cut. So yes, I do agree that as far as security is concerned, there has to be some care applied to what an Apple device can and can't do. But I wouldn't use that argument to shut down the legitimate use of a better OS on an iPad. Anyway. We will all be talking about the same things next year, as we do, year on year with Apple. Cheers, Dave.
