I forgot to make it clear in the video that this issues only applies to the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max, as the iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Plus can't record ProRes 4K 120FPS. Sorry about that.
In this video I'm talking about the USB-C power problem that can happen with certain USB-C SSD storage devices connected to the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
The issue is that with the 4.5W power limit of these iPhones when powering external devices. This power availability will not allow certain SSD drives to work. In my tests all combinations of USB-C NVMe enclosures and Thunderbolt NVMe enclosures using a Gen 4 NVMe M.2 SSDs, would not work during to the power limit.
In my opinion, Apple could have preempted this problem by allowing higher power delivery for such SSD drives. Given that it would not be unreasonable to suggest that for anyone recording high bitrate ProRes 4K 120FPS video to already be using Gen 4 NVMe based SSD drives.

Thank you David, but the iphone 15 pro and pro max has the exakt same problem don't they? I tried certain combinations with my iphone 15 pro and they display the same inability to connect to certain external USB drives, hinting to the exakt same power limitation for them also.

Hi. Yes, the exact same problem, I done a similar video last year with my 15 Pro Max. I really thought that this year Apple would have put Thunderbolt on the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, as they do with the iPad Pro, this would help with this issue as Thunderbolt has more power. Cheers, Dave.

I will be trying my 990 Pro 2TB SSD with a Ugreen 20Gbps ugreen enclosure tomorrow. With and without a hub that supports PD power delivery 3.0. Maybe that helps to power the drive idk let’s see maybe that wattage limit is separate or not idk.
@pvdgucht
@pvdgucht 2 дня назад
This case doesn’t not have a fan and does not do Thunderbolt or USB 4.0 40Gbps so that might actually use more power.. but I don’t have such an enclosure yet. Was actually planning to buy/wait for a thunderbolt 5 ssd enclosure but that might actually be impossible to use in my iPad/iPhone with that power limit 😕😬.
@DavidHarry
@DavidHarry 2 дня назад
@@pvdgucht Hi. Do some research on USB3.2 2x2 (I think this is what your UGREEN is) and Apple products. Certain Macs, maybe all of them, don't utilise the full bandwidth of 2x2, they don't support the extra PCIe lanes. They basically run the drives slower than what they are capable of. I'm not sure but I have feeling that the iPhones and iPads do the same. Also, the USB-C iPhones only support 10Gb/s anyway, so even if they see the drive, they wont hit it at the drive's full speed. Also, I believe the 990 Pro uses over 5W, so coupled with the power requirement of any enclosure, that power draw is easily getting to 7W, maybe more. Apple Silicon iPads are different, they use Thunderbolt and support about 7W but can still be problematic. TB5 will be backwards compatible and should work, but the TB3 and TB4 protocols will mean that even if a TB5 enclosure/drive does work, you wont see any speed increase. TB3 and TB4 also segment bandwidth for DP video, which is why you never see a TB3/4 SSD reaching anywhere near 40Gb/s (5GB/s or 5000MB/s) even with a 7000MB/s Gen4 in them, they usually top out at about 3000MB/s maximum. BTW, extra power delivery, either direct or via a hub or dock can also help. I'd be interested to see how you get on with your drive setup. Good luck 👍 Cheers, Dave.

Thank you for another useful video. Do you think that using an external power supply with the Gen 4 would get round the problem ? I need to use external power if I want to use a Samsung T7 with my 13 Pro.
@DavidHarry
@DavidHarry День назад
Hi. You are very welcome. I wouldn't personally buy a Gen 4 for use with any of the iPhones that have Lightning. All Lightning iPhones only have the equivalent of USB2 speeds, so you wouldn't notice the difference with any SSD, they would all be the same slow speed because of the limitation of Lightning. If you already have a Gen 4, then extra power would help but isn't a guarantee that it will work. Yes, extra power with a T7 will work. These videos may be useful. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VjZCiicTCTU.htmlsi=UxBISnK0vdsYB3bY ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-A9kxtUZrUtY.htmlsi=Vi3lnnqm5NXy3vyC Cheers, Dave.

If I use a hub and connect an external battery to my camera rig will I solve the aforementioned problem?
@DavidHarry
@DavidHarry 2 дня назад
Hi. That will usually sort out the problem, however, there can still be some issues where the iPhone doesn't use the drive at its full speed and can still sometimes not see the drive at all. I'm not sure why that is but I'm guessing that it's a compatibility issue with the USB controller in the enclosure or the drive itself. I use a number of USB and Thunderbolt docks and even using one of those, my iPhone still refuses to see one of my TB4/USB4/Gen4 drives. Again, this sounds like a USB/TB controller compatibility issue. Cheers, Dave.

@@jdgoodwin3136 Hi. You are very welcome. If you don't need crazy speeds, the Samsung T7 is a great drive. It's super easy to power and very lightweight and slim. I have used one for ProRes 4K 60FPS for long takes without a problem. You can always use HEVC in the Blackmagic Camera app for 4K 120FPS, the quality is great and the T7 will easily do that. Plus you will get way more record time. I'll do a video soon comparing ProRes and HEVC on the iPhone. I have also done many codec and bitrate tests on my channel. Cheers, Dave.

Using a gen4 ssd for an iPhone that can only offer 10Gbps is, for lack of a better word, stupid. There are other solutions for this that works on the 4.5W envelope, which will saturate the port speed and more energy efficient.
@DavidHarry
@DavidHarry День назад
What’s stupid is making a comment, thinking you know what your talking about when you quite clearly don’t. You’ve not accounted for the high minimum consistent bitrate needed for such things, which a Gen 4 will be better at than Gen 3 and you never gave any example of a solution that you claim would work.
@kylinblue
@kylinblue День назад
@@DavidHarryright on. And right now it’s easier to source gen4 than gen3 if you buy new.
@HedonicSense
@HedonicSense День назад
@@DavidHarry I probably know more about what I am talking about than you do. Any nvme gen 3 that has ram on it and it is mlc/tlc will saturate 1GB/s of throughput which is more than the 440MB/s a pro res 4k 120fps video will consume, without going above the 4.5W allowance. For example, Hynix P31 Gold will do that for 2.5W. You probably can't beat that, simple and plain. Highly available and still in production. As well, CFExpress cards will do exactly the same thing, with a Lexar CFExpress reader, and are probably a better solution depending of how much video you need to shoot, and this, again, won't go over your power budget. Or even, a 870 EVO sata drive will do 500MB/s forever... literally... for 2.5W. So yes, gen 4 drives, to record on an iphone, are pointless and stupid, and the only advantage would be to transfer back to the PC. But again, there isn't an enclosure that will support more than gen 3 x4 for external drives unless you have the only laptop that it has thunderbolt 5 (done by Razer), but again, without commercial enclosures for it? If you are telling me that every single time you take the nvme out and install it inside the pc, that might not be a painful process at all.

@@HedonicSense As you’ve clearly not taken the bridge controller into account and just relied on how any SSD “should” perform, without it being used with the iPhone, that would suggest that you don’t know more about such things than I do. You may well be very familiar with certain SSDs and their performance, just as I am. But pairing them with an iPhone hardly ever results in the same performance. I have a few Thunderbolt SSDs that can sustain about 2600MB/s for writing. If I use these with most 10Gb/s USB-C hosts via a Thunderbolt dock, they will indeed flood the bus and get about 900MB/s but when attached to the iPhone they will drop to less than half of that. Again, issues with the bridges and controllers. This is why fully testing any “off the shelf” SSD or enclosure/SSD combination is important with the iPhones. You’ve also not taken into account Apple’s lack of support for 3.2 2x2, which although I have not tested on the iPhones because I won’t use a drive or enclosure with those specs due to my Macs. I wouldn’t be surprised if the iPhones have the same issue with the lack of PCIe lanes. If you still think that you may know more about such things than I do, then please feel free to respond with examples of proper validated testing with the iPhones.
@DavidHarry
@DavidHarry День назад
@@HedonicSense BTW, I have already had someone confirm in a comment to one of my videos that their CFexpress cards and interface had issues sustained the bitrate. Again, proving that just because something works properly for what it’s designed for, it doesn’t necessarily mean it will work with the iPhones. Plus I have had others confirm the same issues with other drives that should work.
