I restore old Honda GL500's GL650's CX500's 650's and Turbo’s. I’m a retired Master Mechanic and have owned and worked on these bikes since 1978. I have always loved these bikes and thought they were way ahead of their time since I bought my first new 1982 GL500. I’ve learned a lot of tricks to improve things on these bikes and I do all these things when I do my restorations. I try to build the closest thing to a new bike. I always ride them as much as I can and never turn them loose before they’re ready. I also build custom bikes and Cafe racers out of these bikes but I never cut up a bike that can be restored. I take a lot of pride in what I do and get a lot of satisfaction out of them when they’re finished. I’ve made many friends doing this and will continue to do it as long as my health holds out. I’m more than happy to give free advice and technical help to anyone who’s needs it. You can contact me at Murphymotors@yahoo.com. Please subscribe if you like my videos. Thank you
I suspect, like others have probably suggested, your RU-vid channel would blow up if you filmed the restoration process. In the end you'd still get to do the work you love, but the project would be way more lucrative. There is a very large audience for your level of expertise.
@@erikjohnson4876 I appreciate it but I’m not interested in blowing up. I’m retired and this is just a hobby of mine. I pretty myself I use my channel to host my videos. I help a lot of people with technical advice. . If you ever need help I’m here for you.
@@thebeddoctor4273 if your talking about your own bike the rear brake light switch may be out of adjustment. Try unplugging it and see if it goes out. Then unplug the front one.
What is the black plastic thing between the run switch and throttle? I just picked one up and it has that but seems broken so i dont know what its supposed to do? I was going to just rip it off since its attached to nothing. But how should it be?
Are side bag seals available for these bikes. I just bought a 24k mile bike in excellent condition with full luggage and trunk for $200 It sat in garage for 20 years. I have a pair of 1969 honda cb750 with sequential vin numbers. Both bikes under 500 miles. They were part of an abandoned Honda dealer/shop I bought in an estate sale along with 2 haul trucks full of new parts. Badges. Decals. 1 new 750 crate motor. 2 complete sets of new in package 69,or so body work. Blue candy over flake and red set. Thinking of selling both bikes. Any idea what they are selling for. Both still have original tires and look as close to show room as they get. My back is getting to bad to enjoy riding and hate seeing these bikes sitting. Would like to see them have a deserving home and get a fair price. Any suggestion on price would be appreciated. Also be willing to sell off all the parts in 1 sale. Have a bunch of honda dealer tools. Stacks and boxes of factory repair manuals. Brochures. Owners books. You name it. Everything is not honda from early 60s to mid 70s. Far too much to catalog for 1 person.
Amazing job as always Kevin. I have a cosmo black as well with a dealer added vetter which is good and bad news. Good news in the winter and bad news in the summer. You make all that restoration stuff sound so easy. Take care and keep in keeping on.
Thank you. The OEM ones are almost impossible to find now. The aftermarket ones don’t stay pulled out. I’d try to find a good used one on eBay but that’s a gamble also.
Great video & great restoration! I bought a beautiful 82 GL500 Interstate a week ago, and would like to take the front fairing off and add the front turn signals and headlight from the “standard” GL500. Any recommendations on where to look for parts?
Those parts are getting scarce. You’ll need the turn signals and brackets, headlight bracket and headlight, the radiator trim. Ant the horn mount and trim if you want to do it like factory. It will be a standard with dual discs. Also the standard has the Honda emblems in the tank.
I’ve got an ‘82 SilverWing with less than 19k? Miles on it. Runs great. Looks battle scarred but that’s the way I got it. Mostly. I love the bike, even if it is ugly as all get out
What a beauty! That's the bike I wanted to ride across country in 1981. But I was a poor college student and couldn't afford a new one. So I bought a 1978 used Honda Hawk 400 instead. It got me there and back. I saw lots of these and the old BMW flat engine bikes out on the long road. I don't have the itch to buy a GL500 anymore but it would be fun to ride one and see if it was everything I thought it was.
Looks and sounds just beautiful! I had one just like this in Canada. Travelled up to Montreal, down to Annapolis, through some ferocious thunderstorms.
Email me at Murphymotors@yahoo.com These were way too lean in 81-82. I jet them up a little and always replace the pilot jets with new ones. But that’s just me.
I have the exact bike 1982 gl500 interstate full fairing with cassette dex stereo cruise control all the extras, I'd love to have it redone less than 5,000 mi I'm the original owner
This one is gone. I’m working on nice Gl500 interstate but I think it’s sold already also. My email address is Murphymotors@yahoo.com these bikes sell about as fast as I can build them. If your not in s hurry send me and email and you’ll be next up for the next one.
