this was super helpful! great reminders and I'd love to learn how to better read a nutrition label. everything feels so sneaky and misleading! I mostly cook/make homemade meals but finding snack ideas that wont throw off my goals has been tricky, I feel like I can't trust almost anything pre-made (especially as an american lol). Subscribed, thanks for the great tips!
some small feedback, and its nothing too negative, I think the thumbnail is a little misleading since the food shown with the X's on it wasn't featured, as well as being a (i'm assuming) better choice than everything mentioned in this vid :)
Thank you for watching Lisa! I'm so glad the content was helpful and I will definitely work on a reading nutrition labels video as I think this will be very useful for many! Couldn't agree more, I was recently in the US visiting family and I couldn't believe the amount of snack options available, yet it was so difficult to find good quality options.
I was thinking the same thing! I was aiming to generate curiosity but I thinks its more confusing than anything else 🤣Thank you so much for the feedback, as a relatively new RU-vidr, information like this is really valuable to help me improve.
Thank you for watching! I'm glad it was helpful. I completely agree, macros can get very confusing so little tricks like this can make it slightly easier to follow.
Maria what do you think about low carb bread. I usually use it because I am so afraid of gaining more weight. I need to loose some pounds for my daughter's wedding
Hi Brenda, Thank you for watching! I think low-carb bread has its place and can be helpful for some. However, sometimes it may not be as filling as regular bread, and then we can end up eating more of it or more of other foods, which can defeat its purpose. But for some people, it satisfies their craving for the texture of bread and works well. I think if you are trying to lose weight, using low-carb bread and pairing it with high protein toppings/fillings, etc, is a good strategy.
Thanks Lynette! Yes you’re right! I try to cater for everyone but I’m very proud to be representing the Irish on RU-vid. Thanks for always watching and supporting 🤍🇮🇪
Hi Marie! I love your content here, its truly amazing! But there are quality factors limiting its views and engagement. Id love to edit you a free sample to see if we could collaborate. Heres my number +91 7994947642. Looking forward to your message 🙌
Thanks for the common weight loss mistakes, it was a great reminder! I hope you told her. I would be totally honest and politely and respectfully tell her. I'd be grateful 🙏 and thankful if my friend shared that with me ❤
Great question! If you follow a vegetarian diet, egg and dairy products will provide small amounts of creatine, however not as much as the likes of red meat. Therefore you will likely have lower baseline creatine stores in comparison to non-vegetarians. Because of this you would benefit more from creatine supplements.
Also a common mistake, not looking at the ingredient/calorie list on the packages. somoene was telling me proudly she was eating 2 crackers from a certain store to loose weight (as breakfast, not for the whole day). I knew about those because i had looked at them in the store too. Those crackers contained so much sugar and fat that she would be better off eating 3 whole wheat slices of bread with (dutch) cheese. I didnt had the gut to tell her, since i just met her and it was on a random event. (btw iam from the netherlands and our bread doesnt contain much additives)
Thanks for watching and sharing this info! Oh wow these crackers sound very heavy! Your right things like this can really throw your goals off track without you realizing!
Omg this is so true, I swapped to GF as I was feeling chronic fatigue after eating wheat filled meals. Yes I felt much better but put on 8 kilos enjoying all the GF goodies. 😢
You are so very welcome! Thank you so much for watching! 🤍✨ I love Uganda! I visited there in 2018 and volunteered at Kisiizi hospital for a few weeks 🥰 such a beautiful place!
All very helpful expert advice! Thank you as always ❤ And I think you told your friend because you do have expert knowledge and wanted to share that with her.
I just got diagnosed at 27… I had no idea this even existed! I’ve been feeling horrible for the past few years and I feel like I finally understand why. Thank you for this video! It was very informative on a disease that I feel like no one talks about at least in the U.S.!
Thank you for watching! I’m so glad it was helpful. I find Ireland has gotten very good at early diagnosis of this condition because it’s quite common in Ireland but other parts of the world still don’t have as much awareness of the condition. Great that you got diagnosed so young, I hope you will start to feel better next week soon
I find your information very interesting and value your knowledge in this matter. My GP says my iron / ferritin levels are around 1,400 and has advised me to see a gastroenterologist - for which I have I have made an appointment. I don't have any of the known effects or symptoms. I am also confused as I have been having regular yearly checkups for more than 25 years - including blood and urine tests. I was diagnosed with bladder cancer about five years ago and had to go on a course of BCG (Oncotice) instillations. The cancer is in remission and I feel fine - but am now having a check cystoscopy only ever 12 months. The checks started every 3months, then every 4 months, then 6 months now 12 monthly. Prior to each check cystoscopy I had blood and urine tested. With so much testing, I don't understand why the iron / ferritin problem was never picked up. I am a 78 year old healthy male and weigh 66 kg. I am also never sick. I will know more after visiting the gastroenterologist 4 four weeks from now. Thanks again for your advice and booklet.
Thank you for sharing your story Les. I am very glad the information was useful to you. It sounds like you have been very healthy so I’m sure that will stand to you. I wish you all the best with your further appointments.
Anyone who has come across Maria’s video should investigate further. Her advice is not based on science at all. Check out Dr. Ken Berry’s and Dr. Chaffee’s videos. Read Body Science by David Champion. Scurvy?!? 😂 Advocating a SAD so one wouldn’t feel out of place when eating out and okaying alcohol which is a poison, suggesting it doesn’t help with depression and other mental disorders, advising folks with a family history of heart disease to avoid this WoE, saying it’s expensive… OMG! You’ve lost all credibility as a dietitian. You’re a clown. 🤡
🥕👩🌾🎂 High Protein Carrot Cake for breakfast? Carrot cake is one of my favourite cake flavours, so I naturally needed to make a wholesome breakfast version that was a little higher in fibre and lower in sugar. Topped with a high-protein frosting, it really is just like cake! Recipe Serves 6 - Approx 400kcal and 20g of protein per serving ✨ Ingredients: For the Cake: * 2 medium ripe bananas * 220g rolled oats * 30g vanilla protein powder * 1/2 tsp cinnamon * 1 tsp baking powder * 1 medium carrot, grated * 60g crushed walnuts * 2 tbsp honey * 500ml milk of choice (dairy, almond, soy etc.) For the Cream Cheese Frosting Layer: * 300g plain Greek yoghurt (this can be sweetened to your preference - for me, this involved adding 2 tbsp of honey). Alternatively, you can use a vanilla-flavoured Greek yoghurt. * 60g low-fat cream cheese * 2 tbsp honey Instructions: 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish. 2. Mash the bananas: Mash the ripe bananas until smooth in a large bowl. 3. Mix the dry ingredients: Add the rolled oats, vanilla protein powder, cinnamon, and baking powder to the mashed bananas. Mix well. 4. Add the rest of the cake ingredients: Stir in the grated carrot, crushed walnuts, honey, and milk. Combine everything until it’s well mixed. 5. Pour into the baking dish: Spread the mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish. 6. Bake: Place the dish in the oven and bake for 35-50 minutes until the top is golden and a toothpick comes out clean. Let the oats cool in the baking dish and loosen the edges with a knife. 7. Prepare the frosting: While the cake is baking, mix the Greek yogurt, low-fat cream cheese, and honey in a bowl until smooth. 8. Cool and frost: Once the cake is done, let it cool for a bit. Spread the cream cheese frosting evenly over the top. 9. Serve: Slice into 6 portions and enjoy!
Some really useful tips here! I feel like my body has changed since I hit 40 and really struggle to shift a few pounds now. Looking forward to watching your other videos x
Thanks Karla. I really appreciate the feedback. I’ve stopped putting background music in my more recent videos as a few other people have said similar. I hope you could still hear me ok and I’ll aim to keep improving with future videos
As a vegetarian who eats a lot of the 'fake' meats still, it astounds me how many people assume I am going to be a healthy individual. It's almost like people don't realise that a plant-based diet doesn't just mean 'all vegetables'. It's still possible to get food just as processed as some products containing meat haha!
Such a good point Chelsea. People often automatically assume plant based diets are healthy but really no matter what diet you follow it still requires some effort to make the healthier choice
@@MariauceyRD_Dietitian It's definitely something I am trying to be more mindful of as I research dietetics and other possible career choices haha! I've never claimed to be particularly healthy but I was surprised just how many nutrients have been lacking, while others are definitely in excess amounts.
Hiya! Love the video, I found it very insightful, especially since I am looking to go back to education and get qualified as an RD. As a mature student who will need to do an 'Access to HE: Science' course, what are the chances of any dietitians allowing me to shadow/volunteer with them during that course? Or is it more likely they would want me to have some Dietetic/Nutrition based education first? :) And if you have any advice for someone looking to qualify later in life I'd be happy to hear it <3
Hi Chelsea, Thank you for watching the video! I'm really glad you found it helpful <3 Regarding your shadowing query, the opportunities available to you will largely depend on where you are based. Many public health institutions and hospitals have specific requirements and protocols for accepting shadowing or volunteering requests. Another viable option is to reach out to private dietitians as they often have more flexibility in accepting shadowing requests and might even appreciate the extra help, such as help with admin tasks in return for providing the shadowing experience. My advice for someone looking to qualify later in life is to really leverage your past experience, whether that was in healthcare or not. All of your previous work and life experiences can be a huge asset and there are so many transferable skills like communication, time management, etc. I think if nutrition is something you are really passionate about I would 100% consider pursuing dietetics, it really is a lovely career!
As a dietitian how would you treat someone with a previous history of non responsive celiac disease, milk intollerance, gastroparesis, lymphocytic gastritis, gerd, severe Ige reaction to wheat/soya/corn/rice/nuts ? I have noticed that since my villis are healthed I have iron overload and I am going to take the genetic test. Thank you
Hello, thank you for watching the video, I'm glad it was helpful. This would need a thorough dietetic assessment, your blood results would need to reviewed as well as copies of your previous biopsies.
A menopause channel. Wonderful. Cant wait for that. Im loosing the weight now. But i think maintenance is the worst. Im dreading it. How to i find out my maintenance calories. My weight loss calories are less way than what’s recommended. But it’s finally working. 😢
Hi Anya, thank you for watching the video, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I wrote a blog post recently on calculating calories, you can find it here www.marialuceydietitian.com/dietician-nutrition/how-many-calories-should-i-eat/ It is such a great topic though so I will definitely be addressing it in future videos :)
Vibrio fulnificus: according to one account in the medical literature, while Vf is "a trivial infection in normal healthy adults, a person with iron overload is lucky to even make it to the hospital alive!" I almost certainly had it as a young (and healthy) adult. A dozen or so raw oysters put me in the hospital for two weeks. I was only a few hundred yards from a hospital at the time and my roommate's girlfriend was a nursing student who realized that what others were passing off as a "few too many drinks" (I didn't drink alcohol) was a serious medical emergency and demanded that her boyfriend give us an immediate ride to the hospital (despite putting the interior of his car at considerable risk). My condition was so obvious that they bypassed the usual triage and I got the instant undivided attention of a physician and was immediately put on IV fluids without waiting to determine the cause. (He said I was the worst case of dehydration he'd ever seen). I'm sure it was Vf - tests for other things (amoebic dysentery etc) were all negative and I was the only one out of hundreds at the event who got seriously ill and at least a couple of dozen others had eaten the oysters raw. (Found out later the person who'd purchased them got them at a huge discount at the wharf from a batch that was supposed to have been discarded because the water they came from was polluted). Shellfish are filter feeders and concentrate LIVE pathogens. This is why shellfish are so dangerous to people with iron overload. Iron is the growth limiting factor for most pathogens and giving them freely available excess iron is like fertilizer to them. You absolutely do not want to catch this disease if you have iron overload. Despite the student infirmary being seriously overcrowded at the time, I was given exclusive use of a two person room (instead of the usual large ward) with it's own bathroom because they absolutely did not want me to have to wait even an instant for access to the facilities. I did not realize for another 20 years or so that I had hemochromatosis (C282Y++) but I was almost certainly already iron overloaded at that time. I now do not eat shellfish at all, whether it's cooked or not, because of the risk of someone preparing it not following proper procedures. (It's very high in iron anyway). If you have iron overload and catch Vf you need to get put on IV fluids within a very short time. "Lucky to even make it to the hospital alive" is not an exaggeration!
