A lovely inspirational video. I’m new to sewing and enjoying the success I’m having with the Tilly and the Buttons patterns. I have made an Indigo top but can’t decide which fabric to use for the dress. I’ve just finished the Nell dress in a beautiful Rose and Hubble floral cotton poplin and I absolutely love it.

I have not tried any of her patterns but I do enjoy the look of patterns by Rooney sewing. I am planning on making her Betty dress and I really like that she offers many different variations of this pattern. I think her style is a more wearable/ subtle cottage core style as well.

Thank you so much Rachel. I just found you recently and am loving your content so i just wanted to leave a couple of words here. I am a knitter and also trying out spinning. The more i watch your sewing videos, the more i really want to dive into trying out sewing myself. I am just still intimidated and really have no idea on how to start as i am an absolute beginner. It would be so awesome to be able to make my own dresses as i am living in dresses and skirts but really have troubles finding the ones i really want due to my really curvy figure. Do you have any tips on how to start and which are great ressources to learn everything?
@RachelBearn
@RachelBearn 16 дней назад
Thank you for your lovely comment and I’m so excited that you are inspired to sew! I would really recommend Tilly and the Buttons patterns to start. They have lots of videos to help and have a beginner section on their website for all the beginner patterns. Also my friend Sally has a great channel on YT - Secret Life of a Seamstress and she did a whole series for beginner sewists recently. Another channel I recommend is Rosery Apparel, she also did a series for beginner sewists either tutorials to follow and all the tips you need. Hope that helps ❤️

As usual, your pattern recommendations are wonderful! I feel like my bra straps would show in a lot of these though 😅 As a busty, plus sized gal in her 40s, I can’t do anything with too much cleavage or back showing.

Good advice!!! I'd also recommend buying a vintage, all metal sewing machine from the 1950's, 1960's and early 1970's, before they started using nylon gears and then plastic parts. They sew like beasts through anything you throw at them and can be serviced and repaired at home, which saves a LOT of money. Here in the States I always recommend vintage, all-metal Kenmore machines (originally sold at Sears Department stores) but you can find lots of all-metal Japanese clones of Kenmores and Singers under various names. New Home machines were made by the company known as Janome today, so they are also good, vintage machines. Facebook Marketplace always has vintage machines listed, can usually be found in thrift/charity stores, and those sewing machine repair shops you mentioned probably have some, too.

It's a bit unconventional a suggestion (and I'm not a knitter!), but... Could you sew the yellow cardigan into a smaller size? Like, take in the side seams and bind them? Forgive me if that's a ridiculous idea 😅
@RachelBearn
@RachelBearn 22 дня назад
I’ve thought the same! But really not sure how to do it without making it really bulky because you can’t really cut the knitted fabric. I might try and shrink it in the tumble dryer though…
