Tim - words in Malay (Bahasa Malaysia) that are phonetically pronounced "ch" are now spelled without the "h". Therefore "roti canai" is actually pronounced "roti chanai". This followed the Indonesian-Malaysia orthography reform. I haven't lived in Malaysia since 1979. When I visited in 1982, I noticed the change in spelling. Another spelling change was "ayer" was changed to "air" - that confused me at the gas (petrol) station when I thought I could inflate my tires and discovered a water faucet instead of an air hose! At McDonald's I had no idea that "pai epal" was apple pie!

Well, I'm in Bishkek and a few corrections: there's plenty of clearly visible pedestrian crossing signs that even tell you how many seconds you have left to cross. Drivers are good at stopping even for you even when there's no lights. Victory, not Victoria square :)
