Thank you so much for that video. I appreciate it all the more because I know how much it will have taken out of you. My condolences on the loss of your wife - she clearly meant a great deal to you. My experience with radiation and ADT has been very similar to yours, and like you my physically active life has rather slumped into a porridge. I wish you all the best for the future.

Is your Maggie Center located in Edinburgh? We are considering moving there next year, as diplomats. I have stage 4 metastatic, have done radiation, chemo (which was bad but short and doable; great results I think) and now ADT with injections and enzalutamide. We are trying to assess if Edinburgh would have the infrastructure to support a move there. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, No, I use the Maggie's Centre attached to Forth Valley Hospital. There is one in Edinburgh, attached to the Western General Hospital. I'm sure that it would be just as good as the one that I attend. I have had a quick look and it looks like they also run the Living Well with Prostate Cancer Course which is the one that I found very useful. They can also be very good for partners and families. As I have said, I couldn't recommend them highly enough. I can't say anything about the hospitals in Edinburgh but I guess that they would be as good as anywhere else in the UK. Certainly, the treatment that I receive at Forth Valley is good. I hope that your treatment is successful at keeping the disease at bay. It was for me. My PSA was virtually zero. It is just a matter for me that since the loss of my wife, I find it difficult to cope with the side effects, the worst being the effect that Enzalutamide seemed to have on my cognitive function. One of the best lessons that I learned at the Maggie's Centre, however was that it is different for everyone. Thanks for your comments and I wish you well. There are many worse places that you could move to than Edinburgh.

Is the fitted charger cheaper than a standard plug for electricity?
@NiroPensioner
@NiroPensioner 5 дней назад
The charger is not any cheaper but it is quicker and, with the tariff that I have from my electricity supplier, I can charge the car from 30% to 80% within the four hours of cheap rate electricity. I wouldn't be able to do that from the standard plug.

Just discovered your channel, love the unique casual delivery. I'm retired and only need to charge once a week. I've looked at changing to an EV favoured supplier, my understanding is that you get a cheaper tariff during the early hours but do they not then charge you a higher rate for during the day so unless you need to charge every night it's not worth it. I may be wrong so happy to be corrected.

Thanks for your kind comment. Some might say amateurish rather than casual! I don't know about other suppliers but I am with Octopus on their "Go" tariff so, yes I get cheap rate around 9p between 00:30 and 04:30. I charge two to three times a week and it is very cheap indeed. the rest of the time I am on their standard tariff.

Well done on the video! An easy relaxed style and honest too.. We nearly bought one of these but went for a new Leaf instead The thing with the range is that the biggest effect is speed, with an EV most of the energy is used to resist the air, and if you double the speed, you quadruple the effort required to push. In a petrol car most of the energy in the fuel is lost as heat or friction in the engine. So it's much harder for the car to tell you a real range as it doesn't know how you'll drive! We find it's right if the journey is A roads.
@NiroPensioner
@NiroPensioner 6 дней назад
Thanks for your comment. My leaf was a good car in many ways. The only real issue with it was the range but it was only a 30kWh model. It is really the fault of the salesman at the Nissan dealership. I told him that, being retired, most of our running was local but that we would want a vehicle that could get us to Glasgow and back without recharging. He sold us the 30kWh model. It could theoretically do it but it would be so tight, especially in the winter that I woudn't risk it. If he had sold me the 40kWh model, I would probably still have it.
@FoxInClogs
@FoxInClogs 7 дней назад
As a former Leaf owner, I can agree with all of your criticisms, except for the lack of heating. I never had any issues with the heater, and as far as I know the Leaf was always delivered with a heat pump. Maybe there was an issue with your car? I also never had range anxiety, but that was with a 62 kWh battery Leaf. As far as I know, the Leaf was only available with 24, 40 and 62 kWh battery options. Was yours a 24 kWh version, maybe? I did experience Rapidgate a couple of times on long road trips (more than 500 km (300 miles) in one day.) The Leaf would charge reasonably quickly for the first two sessions, after which the battery got too warm and the charging speed dropped to 22 kW, taking more than an hour to charge. The one negative point that you didn't mention (experience?) is the relative lack of ChaDeMo chargers for rapid charging. CCS gives way more options to charge, although their are now adaptors available, I believe. ChaDeMo can theoretically charge at 100 kW with the 62 kWh but you will probably never find a charger offering more than 50 kW.
@NiroPensioner
@NiroPensioner 7 дней назад
Thanks for your comments. My leaf was a 30kWh and although it was great foe everyday local running, I do regular trips of 40 miles each way and though it, theoretically, could do it, it would have been too tight for me to feel comfortable. I was mightily annoyed because the only spec that I gave to the salesman at the Nissan dealership was to be able to do that round trip without charging. Perhaps the heater was faulty. As it was my first EV and doesn't obviously have a combustion engine to extract heat from, I guess I just thought that was how they must be. I never took it on long runs but usually charged at a 50kW pod point in a supermarket car park which had both ChaDeMo and CCS. It would start quickly, usually in the 40s but would tail off when it got above 70% but that was enough to get me home.
@paulni6917
@paulni6917 6 дней назад
The 30kWh is the old shape from about 2016. Thing is Nissan didn't change the battery much, but they did change the BMS, and basically overegged it. So a lot have really poor batteries. Degradation is a big problem. The 24 was fine and the new ones are fine too. Inherently the lack of cooling is a problem, but this is Britain, it's not that hot! With active cooling though, your niro heats the cabin with heat from the battery, which saves you a bit.
@NiroPensioner
@NiroPensioner 6 дней назад
@@paulni6917 Thanks for that. There was a lot that I liked about the Leaf and were it not for the heating issue and had the sales guy sold me a 40kWh model, I would probably still have it.

I watched a couple of your posts on your Niro EV recently as I too have owned and enjoyed EV’s for nearly four years. I then noticed this post. Thank you so much for being so candid and courageous about recounting your prostate cancer history. I was diagnosed with advanced stage prostate cancer about six weeks ago and have been on hormone therapy (tablets followed by the regular injections) since then. I am due to have radiotherapy in a few month’s time. I am uncertain what will happen after that but understand it’s possible I will need to continue on the hormone treatment at least for some time. Your story was very helpful for me to hear, including about the various side effects, which I sort of knew about. It’s early days for me but I have particularly noticed the tiredness affecting me a little. However, I do thank you again for sharing your experience with everyone and wish you all the best, whichever way you decide to go with your continued treatment and also for your RU-vid channel. I will definitely continue to watch your posts and have now subscribed. Thank you also for sharing details of the Maggie Centres, which I’d not heard of and I will look into further.

Thanks for sharing this Alistair. I'm sorry to learn about your diagnosis. I wish you well with your treatment. It has been eight years since my diagnosis and it sounds like you will be having similar treatment to me. The combination of radiotherapy and hormone therapy has been extremely effective for me. I have spent 5 of the last 8 years on hormone therapy and while it is effective, my PSA is vitually zero, the progressive nature of the side effects, for me, has become enough. I am pretty certain that I will not continue with the hormone therapy. But everyone is different and you may well fare better under them. My Maggies Centre runs a Living Well with Prostate Cancer course. I imagine others will do similar. I found it really useful. There is advice on Diet, exercise and coping with the other many side effects. I really recommend it if you can access such a thing. Once again, wish you well with it and thanks for sharing on here.

Very informative indeed, thank you for the video. Hormone treatment is brutal, I've been on it for six months, have gained 2st and 6" on my waistline, lost body hair, feet swell, ED the lot, it's pretty miserable really but it could be worse of course. I found I had PC through a routine blood test (9.2), biopsy (ouch), found to be Gleason 7 (4+3) stage T3A which means the cancer is just outside my prostate. After my test, my three older brothers had blood tests and all were found to have PC too, so you can guess on the topic when we get together. Four brothers with varying degrees of PC on various treatments. Back to ADT treatment, or let's call it what it really is, "chemical castration", I can fully understand why anyone would consider stopping hormone treatment (ADT), you have to be enduring it to fully understand. Gents, please have a regular PSA test if you are over 50, note that myself and my three older brothers had no symptoms of PC. One word of advice for people on ADT, exercise is KEY, I lift weights four times a day and walk a couple of miles each day, althouth it's getting more difficult to walk due to muscle loss, which is another side effect. Luckily I have a physical job and I'm sure that helps although I'm finding it more tiring. Apologies for the long rant
@NiroPensioner
@NiroPensioner 9 дней назад
Don't apologise for ranting. The whole point of my video was to try to publicise how important it is for men to get tested and catch PC at a stage where it can be dealt with effectively and you sharing the experiences of yourself and your brothers can only help. It seems that your experience of the disease and the side effects is similar to mine. I have made the decision that I have had enough. It is, as you say, chemical castration. The ED and loss of libido and stuff were not a major issue for me and my wife was very understanding. In terms of physical side effects it is the fatigue, the loss of stamina and strength that bothers me but more so, and this may be more a side effect of the Enzalutamide, feeling slightly knocked of mentally is very depressing. That's why I will not be continuing with the hormone treatment. Thanks so much for your frank sharing and I wish you well in the fight against this disease.

You touch on many interesting things, such as living in France. Perhaps you could talk about that occasionally? I am writing this from our little gaff in Portugal which we have had for ten years. Thanks for your comments. I think that there ought to be a screening program for prostate cancer like there is for breast and cervical cancer in women but, in the absence of that, if my video encourages even one man to get tested and diagnosed early enough, I will be happy. We loved our time in France but as happens to many expats the need to be nearer children and grandchildren brought us back in the end. I was a big fan of Dr Michael Mosley too. Such a tragedy what happened to him. I loved listening to his Just one Thing radio program and it inspired me to try a number of "Just One Things" that I have managed to keep up. Anyway, I'm a 71 year old bloke who has had his first EV for nearly a year, and I'm very pleased with it. A 2016 Hyundai Ioniq 28kwh, it only has a maximum range of around 140 miles, but, like yours it is an honest assessment. Even in just a year, I seem to have taken a big hit in depreciation, but I am thinking of turning that into a positive, and going upmarket a bit to a Kia Niro such as you have. I am astonished how cheap my car has been to run. I have a running average of 4.8 mpkwh and with Octopus overnight electricity at 7.5ppkwh, it costs next to nothing to run. I don't think the Niro is quite as efficient, but it should still be cheap. Thank you for your very positive assessment of your car. Like you, I spend quite a lot of time on RU-vid, and finding your channel has given me something else to look at. Many thanks, and keep buggering on, as Churchill would say.

Thanks for your kind comments. You are the first person to report significant battery degradation. I would be interested to know what your charging regime is like. The difference from the 30 kWh Nissan Leaf to a 64 kWk Niro is simply life changing. I used to drive the whole time with one eye on the battery level, now I don't even think about. There is nowhere that I go in normal usage that I can't do the return trip easily. I agree about the cost. I was just explaining to a neighbour yesterday that I used to put £120 a month in my diesel car, now it's about £20 of electricity and virtually no servicing costs. I'm glad that you like my style. I am very aware that I am amateurish at best but I think I was just thinking of what to do with myself after the loss of my wife. @@NiroPensioner I haven't been terribly clever with my charging regime. Because of the small battery, and the fact that I rarely have a clue what I'm doing the following day, I always charge it to 100%, so I've only got myself to blame if the battery is going south. That is one reason I'm looking at the 64kwh Niro. I can charge it to 80% and still get anywhere I could feasibly want to. I have to wait for the sale of a rental property to go through, though before I can afford it. Fingers crossed! I'll let you know how it goes. I might ask that Jonathan Porterfield fellow to bid at auction for me. He's a great advocate for the Niro. He's done some nice RU-vid videos. Anyway, best wishes. Get the dog out for a walk. Thanks for your comment. Yes, insurance is becoming very expensive. My insurance went up by 50% this year. Off the top of my head it is now around £450 for the Niro. EV insurance is a little higher than for an equivalent ICE car but they are converging year on year.

At eighty seven I am finding the insurance costs are becoming rather steep, could you give an idea of the cost on the Nero.

Just seen this. Hope you're still enjoying the Niro, and now understand how the GOM works, and that you wont have lost any useable battery capacity. If you really want to geek out get an OBD dongle and Car Scanner and enjoy lots more data, including battery Stste of Health.

Thanks. I have purchased a car scanner dongle but haven't got around to trying it yet. That's something to look forward to.

Winter mode has absolutely zero impact above its trigger point whixh is something like -10 to -15C. So wouldnt worry about it!

I had a 2022 Kia E-Niro on a two year business lease. Without doubt, the worst car I've ever had. I was relieved to get rid of it last month. Fairly good range in summer but be prepared to lose circa 30% of your range in cold weather. Though to be fair, a lot of that is a general commentary on EV's. Also, coming from a BMW X3 into a Kia E-Niro; it just felt cheap. I think EV's can work if you commute within charging distance from home but if you have to tap into the National charging network, then I wouldn't bother.

Interested to know what you replaced it with that's better than the brilliant e-Niro

Different experience for myself, same deal as yourself from Arnold Clarke ..and bumblebee… the cost .. the installalers .. and the evec charger have all been excellent… Having tried to get BG and Octopus to install they couldn’t be bothered as it required the cable running around the perimeter of the house … Bumblebee and their subcontractor installers were willing to commit

That's great. I am really happy with mine now that it works. I have to say that they were good about mine too. I live in a single story cottage and suggested that they run the cable through the attic and drop it down the wall rather than round the outside and they were happy to do it.

Thanks for your comments. Yes, please get tested regularly. If caught early complete remission is probable. I believe that there should be a screening program for men much like breast and cervical screening for women.

Thanks for such an inspiring video on the e-Niro and UK EV life. My wife and I are retired UK ex-pats living in California. I have been driving EVs for 10 years starting with a leased BMW i3 back in 2014. More recently we bought a Chevy Bolt in 2018 which my wife drives and I replaced my 2014 i3 with a 2013 Fiat 500e (60K on the clock for just $5000) which is great as a local runaround. My 2013 Fiat is probably a perfect testament to the expected longevity of EV batteries. The pack is at least 11 years old by now finding the Fiat average range is down to a little under 80 miles in ideal conditions and about 65 miles in very Hot/Cold times. Bear in mind that when new, the Fiat only had a typical range of 87 miles so I was pleasantly surprised. I'm expecting to see further degradation but it certainly is still a viable vehicle for local use. I was thinking of changing the Fiat out for a used e-Niro but also did a little research into battery replacement and was also pleasantly surprised. The pack contains readily available standard Samsung modules: eleven 5S and seven 6S. Supposedly using the car's OBD port I should be able to determine individual battery module condition so I can isolate any of the more severely deteriorated ones and replace them at $150 each for the 6S and $110 for the 5S. The labour costs on top will be around $400-$500 to pull, replace and test the pack however a number of local community colleges with vehicle tech programs are desperately in search of work experience EV "project" cars to work on so I thought I might approach an instructor to see if there's interest if I supply a couple of each type of module.

That's really interesting and useful information. Thanks. I knew it was possible to replace individual cells but have never looked into the costs involved. Very useful indeed. I don't know but I guess that it may depend on whether degradation is general across all cells or specific to a few cells. As you say about your fiat 500e though, With my KIA, I can accept quite a bit of degradation before the vehicle would become unusable for me. Thanks again for the info.

Thanks for watching and subscribing. Do make sure that you get yourself tested regularly. If caught early PC can be treated very effectively. Personally I think there should be a screening program, much as there is for breast cancer.

Thank you as an American OAP I'm considering a next car. I'd like to go electric I live outside a beach resort in a semi rural area. Range becomes an issues. Most months I make a trip to visit with a friends about 70 miles away. Medical services here are somewhat thin on the ground and if I need something taken care of if its other than my Internist, (I still think of them as General Practitioners) and need to drive to a major city I need to go about 120 miles. I'd obviously want to recharge at that point but that would be ok. I love my gas powered Kia, and hope to keep it another 3 years but then I think I'll go electric. I have solar on our home so I can generate my own fuel that way. Again thanks this was a great video.
@NiroPensioner
@NiroPensioner 22 дня назад
Thanks for your comments. It's good that you are considering all the pros and cons. The KIA will do the 140 mile roundtrip easily. It theoretically could do the 240 miles as well but I've yet to do that sort of trip myself. But so long as you have access to the charging infrastructure, you would easily be able to top it up enough while you were attending your health professional. I guess if you live at a beach resort, you won't be hampered by the low temperatures that I face here in Scotland. Wish you well with it.
