@@aBeardintheWild interesting, have seen seals hundreds of times but never eating anything. They probably behave more naturally without a diver in the water though!
@@jackmetcalfe8542 possibly, one was at Rhosneigr. Fishing off the rocks, seal surfaced and had a ray in it's mouth. Sat there and ate it then disappeared.
Maye there's tons of bass around, more than enough around the uk coast right now. Different story with the cod though, and it's not like your trawling the seas is it! Ex trawlrman and shore angler here, crack on bud cos your vids are educational for anglers, and those nay sayers are probably noobs and ain't worth the air time.
@@KTMSparky wear an 8mm wetsuit as I get cold fast, most guys in Wales wear a 7/5mm Mask I don’t think matters much for shallow diving, most important thing is the correct weighting
As a bass fishermen, I respect the selectivity of responsible spearos and the skill involved. I did have a couple of spearos (foreign) drop in just in front of where I was fishing which is out of order. But I suspect most are responsible like Jack.
@@johntaylor3448 the marks I’m at have almost never seen line anglers, who all seem to fish off piers casting onto barren sand There’s a few quite professional looking guys in boats hitting the reefs but not many!
@@jackmetcalfe8542 It depends by the area but, yes, in general less fish than in Atlantic, unless you have a boat, you live in a good area like Corsica or Sardinia and are able to dive very deep...
Shore fisherman here, must say its very interesting to see the fish in there natural environment like that, often wondered, very eye opening. Impressive free diving skills too. subbed.
@@HomeSickAlienJayman glad you enjoyed it! Definitely helps with shore tactics seeing how fish behave underwater, especially the differences in how the bass are moving at different tide states
@@Mikejolly2807 smaller fish I think are best grilled/baked whole, bigger fish cut into thin steaks and pan fried, lots of spices :) Used to date a Jamaican girl and her mum was an amazing cook, did so many good fish recipes
Wow loads of Bass,I dont dive just use a rod.your videos help me to see what kind of terrain they hang out on.How many are you allowed to keep?keep the videos coming realy enjoyable 👌
@@xl250mon5 can keep 2 fish of 42cm or larger. They really prefer the kelp, but most line anglers cast off piers onto barren ground, anyone who floatfished livebaits off a boat would catch so many
Should we not be preserving bass, a species that has been under threat. With rod and line we can at least return the fish. I appreciate you may be allowed to take fish but that doesn't mean you should be. I am certainly not in principle against taking fish for the pot by the way.

@@mattwright2964 that is definitely a valid point. I think both line fishing and Spearfishing take so much skill that recreational anglers will never catch enough to threaten populations As we all know the issue is commercial fishing, the most wasteful food production industry ever developed
@@jackmetcalfe8542 thanks, while I agree in part that we have limited impact, I rarely take fish nowadays especially bass and obviously salmon. I fish rod and line. I would take pollack and very occasionally trout. I'm not against commercial fishing of viable stocks if its small scale local inshore fishing but large scale commercial fishing is an abomination.
@@Coast2CoastFishing-jg1px hope you find more fish that I did!! Can’t say I’m in a rush to go back, the area was cool but didn’t see many shootable fish
@@Coast2CoastFishing-jg1px do you spear? I think means fish are in the general area, but once the seals are active the fish vanish Speared off Bardsey island and literally didn’t see a single fish for the first 2 hours, just hundreds of seals!
I was spearing around Porth Dafach on the weekend. I missed a lovely bass, and it actually reared back at me, fins, spikes and eyes flaring in anger! It was quite the reaction and I wasn't expecting that at all! Caught lots of plaice instead - Viz about 10 metres!!
Few questions you could help me out on, do you always tow a smb/float? If so how do you stop getting caught up in the line when ascending especially if you have speared a fish (2 lines)
@@andjjones9728 I generally don’t use a float. However in areas with boat traffic I do recommend taking one Having a longer float line means the float (and line) will be well away from you when ascending, if diving in 5m I find having 10-12m of float line out works best
Had my second ever go at spearfishing the other day at this mark. I stayed to the left of the church and Saw lots of lobster just undersize walking out in the open. Had a chance to spear a nice bass in the shallows but when I pulled the trigger the safety was on. Gutting but one step closer to my first fish. Thanks for the tips 👍
@@georgeworsley2601 you’ll have it cracked soon. My first season I shot 4 Bass in 20ish sessions, barely even saw them, nowadays see dozens every time I’m out Time in the water will hone your hunting strategies
@@nospoon4799 I’ve personally never shot one, they seem like pet fish underwater and I think it’s unsporting Some southern europeans say they’re good eating so perhaps we just don’t know how to prepare then well here
Sorry to hear you have damaged your ACL, I am about to start spearfishing, going on a course next week. I have a torn ACL and a grade 2 MCL. I had the OP done, re-tore it bouldering. I would actually like to hear your thoughts on spearfishing with a damaged ACL, or if you want to know more about my experience or about the surgery options hit me up. Though from the video I guess yours isn't too bad, hopefully you won't need an op.
Basically the knee has collapsed almost at random twice, both during sparring (boxing) Have limped to marks on crutches and it’s been absolutely fine Spearfishing, the compression of the wetsuit seems to help a lot How was the rehab after your first surgery?
@@nospoon4799 shooting larger fish is extremely difficult - most spearfishermen will never get a fish like this, they’re so skittish. Spearing really doesn’t present any threat to fish populations, it’s simply too difficult and too conditions dependent Interestingly I thought this fish was around the 5lb mark when I saw it, judging size underwater is extremely hard
@@jackmetcalfe8542 Sure, I get that. Big ones are very rare around that area though. Even at 8lbs it is only just getting into being a productive breeder. Still a small bass. You are definitely not the problem with the bass fishery. The locals will blame you so they don't have to deal with the people they know who do illegal netting, their neighbours. 🤣 I have no objections to taking fish for the table. I do it myself. Mackerel more than bass though. Wrasse are just rank no matter how you cook them they have no flavour. Weird texture.
@@nospoon4799 have you come across any gill netting? I’ve only seen it once, at Nefyn, was full of dogfish which I cut free. But never seen it anywhere else
Usually I dive alone. Am comfortable spearing to around 20 meters however in the areas I dive virtually all the fish are in 1-10m Have freedived much deeper than that so it’s about only doing what you’re very confident with
Great to see you putting content out and enjoying yourself. If you are ever in the lizard in Cornwall get in touch and I’ll show you around some great spots.
Glad you enjoyed the video. What I would say is that the marks I give away on RU-vid are average at best Did you see a lot of fish in this video? If tourists flood to an area where they saw two average Bass get shot in a video then that’s just a dumb thing to do 😂
@@jackmetcalfe8542 Enjoyed it thoroughly mate, thanks for that. Many people never get to see underwater footage like that. To be honest most people can go years without catching a Bass, there's more to it than turning up and chucking a bait out haha. It was a lot better for Bass when Wylfa was operational but like you said, it's not a prime location anymore. Keep up the vids. 😃
@@stubeard7981 a few people have angrily messaged me about giving the mark away but I couldn’t honestly recommend it - the vis wasn’t great, it’s awkward to get to and there just weren’t many fish
