Spearfishing massive Bass at Aberffraw, North Wales, and diving with Rays 

Its nothing like sex, I go spearfishing at least 3 times a week in summer 😂

@@aBeardintheWild interesting, have seen seals hundreds of times but never eating anything. They probably behave more naturally without a diver in the water though!

@@jackmetcalfe8542 possibly, one was at Rhosneigr. Fishing off the rocks, seal surfaced and had a ray in it's mouth. Sat there and ate it then disappeared.

@@georgeworsley2601 you’ll have it cracked soon. My first season I shot 4 Bass in 20ish sessions, barely even saw them, nowadays see dozens every time I’m out Time in the water will hone your hunting strategies

Hopefully will be at some point, have heard big things about that area

An understandable choice, interestingly this particular fish didn’t appear anywhere near as big as it was, and the smaller one had much better meat

@@jackmetcalfe8542 8lb is a rare bass these days. In America they use size slots. Return the large and small fish makes a healthy fishery long term.

@@nospoon4799 shooting larger fish is extremely difficult - most spearfishermen will never get a fish like this, they’re so skittish. Spearing really doesn’t present any threat to fish populations, it’s simply too difficult and too conditions dependent Interestingly I thought this fish was around the 5lb mark when I saw it, judging size underwater is extremely hard

@@jackmetcalfe8542 Sure, I get that. Big ones are very rare around that area though. Even at 8lbs it is only just getting into being a productive breeder. Still a small bass. You are definitely not the problem with the bass fishery. The locals will blame you so they don't have to deal with the people they know who do illegal netting, their neighbours. 🤣 I have no objections to taking fish for the table. I do it myself. Mackerel more than bass though. Wrasse are just rank no matter how you cook them they have no flavour. Weird texture.

@@nospoon4799 have you come across any gill netting? I’ve only seen it once, at Nefyn, was full of dogfish which I cut free. But never seen it anywhere else

Had it in Indonesia once. The first few times I speared off Wales was dizzy for days afterwards, found that swimming to an area that’s rocks and not kelp helps The kelp chaotically wafting everywhere tends to make it worse

Get out there. Every vessel is unique, sunny day like this just get in with a 5mm and pick some rock up and see how you hang in the water column.

Weight is best adjusted to the hunting depth, I wear a belt and a vest, meaning I can remove the vest and attach it to my float when diving deeper In this session I'm using 12kg of lead, and an 8mm wetsuit top & bottoms. Am 6'1 and 83kg myself On deeper dives in a 7/5mm wetsuit I often wear as little as 5kg

@@jackmetcalfe8542 So does this mean you are positively buoyant when at the surface. Do you have to tread water to keep you head out when breathing.

@@andjjones9728 with this set up I am neutrally bouyant at 5 meters. An 8mm wetsuit is extremely thick and no one else I know wears one A suit this thick and that much lead makes Spearfishing much more tiring, however I’m exceptionally physically fit and also get cold fast so prioritise being warm over anything else I do NOT recommend this set up for others!! Finding the right weighting takes lots of practice and you just need to get out regularly and see what’s best for you

@@nospoon4799 I’ve personally never shot one, they seem like pet fish underwater and I think it’s unsporting Some southern europeans say they’re good eating so perhaps we just don’t know how to prepare then well here
