Great video Shaun. Teifi pools holds a special place in my heart. Fished once and blanked, my brother next to pulling them in no problem lol. Never hear the end of it. Heading back this coming weekend for a much over due trip. Do you have any recommendations on flies? Tied up a lot of Leech’s and hoopers so far. Welcome your reply

The one person who really knows this water better than anybody. its Justin Allen. And Justin will always recommend Claret Bumble on the dropper and silver Invictor on the point. Both size 14. There are always going to be other patterns on the day. We were on this water today for a few hours. Concentrating on Llyn Teifi. Four of us fishing and a fish a piece. I had mine on a dry, which looks more like a muddler. Steve had his on a Black and green lure. Sam on a Claret Bumble, and Justin the same. Justin covered this water last week and had 14. Most of the fish came from the bay on the road side of the Llyn. Today the best was to cross over to other side via the dam. Go past the posts that are in the water. And head for the first point. This area puts you into deeper water. And as most of the time the fish can be found close in. Always fish the hang. And if you can get your dropper to skate on the surface. This can be lethal. Cover as much water as you can until you find some fish. Always cover the margins ahead of your self. Good luck Arran. Have a great day. Shaun.

Love your vids Shaun. Thank you. You posted a video about your new rod. Which brand model do you use?
@shaunfishes101
@shaunfishes101 9 дней назад
Thanks so much Chris. We use a lot of rods, but are now focused more on mid action rods. This is mainly down to how we are fishing and how fishing is changing. Over the last few years we are seeing more fish, or resident fish feeding on the smaller stuff. So with the more powerful tip action rods we are restricted on tippet strength. Presenting smaller patterns with a lighter tippet is best done on the softer action rod. One great rod which Justin has, and I am saving up for is the sage LL. But for my main rods at the moment which are great for a lot of the times. As we tend to fish in high winds for most of the time. Are Loomis IMX 7# which is used when on the intermediate. A very light and comfortable rod with loads of power and accurate. Loomis Asquith 6# even lighter and very powerful. Great casting rod and very accurate. This rod creates great line speed when needed, and tight loops. I use this rod most of the time on the floating lines. Mackenzie Graphien 6# a great rod with plenty of power. Again light in the hand. I purchased this rod a few years back and very pleased with it. But now this same rod is half the price. Which I think makes it a great bye. If you are looking to purchase a high end rod, we really should talk to Justin. He has so much experience with rods. But also owns most of them. But most of all I would always try before you purchase. There are so many rods out there but not suited to every one. I have certainly fished with a lot of lower end rods and they have served me well. But most of all it will be more about what you fish. What conditions you are more likely to fish. And how long your average session could be. Fishing with a lump of a rod all day can be hard going. Need to find out any more on rods let us know. But ultimately it should be your choice as to what suites you better. Thanks for the comment Chris. Take care. Shaun.

We have been working with our latest pattern, which is a pearl olive nymph. It is very similar to the Dawl. we are finding the simplicity of the pattern seems to be key. Spars is good. Like the dawl it catches fish consistently. And as you have found fished many ways. Not sure about your self, But we have tried a few colours with this new pattern. They can catch fish, but the olive works far better. Thanks for the comment Johnathan. Shaun.

You are sort of correct. No matter how many lines we try, we will never try them all. However, way back then this line If I remember was around £20. I still rate this line. Fishing is changing Bill. Its more down to climate, and our hatches are not what they used to be. There is going to be big changes on stillwaters in the future, as we see aquatic and insect life depleting. Fish are spending a lot of time on micro stuff. The same micro stuff which is not effected as badly with climate change. If the waters you fish are stocked more often then your in with a chance. But when that same fish switches to resident. Its going to be a lot more challenging. This is when we need to think about our approach. Mornings is still by far the best of fishing. We would never bank on the evening any longer. We start off with small size 14 Diawel or nymphs. My fav at the moment and which has caught loads of fish, is the olive pearl nymph. Its a pattern we have worked on for years. Very close to a straight buzzer, as its so sparse. For most of the time I fish this high and fast. Then slowing down a bit if no response from the fish. We fish a very difficult water at Hayscastle. And if we can make things happen here. We are covered for most waters. But your experience is not uncommon in to days fishing world. For us boys, its like going back in time. The pleasure is being there. Catching that tricky resident fish is a great reward. Its a sad thought that so many only turn up within a few days of stocking. Never to be seen until next stock. Not good for the fishery manager or the fishery. May be try a different water with a different approach. Just go out enjoy the days peace. Stay confident and chill. Pity you were not closer. We would have you sorted in no time. Mind we do have people book from all over the UK. They love the area. Pembrokeshire. If ever interested drop me a line. Take care Bill. Shaun.

@shaunfishes101
@shaunfishes101 Месяц назад
Hi Brian, sorry for such a long delay in response, but I have a lot going on in my life at the moment that really needs my full attention. The intermediate that we use most is the slower ones. There are a lot of patterns that are best fished with a bit of pace and at a certain level. And the slower ones keep you in the zone for longer. I try to explain this in the latest video. Rio aqua 11. (that's two not eleven). You will hardly ever see the indicator used on our waters. Its not that they are banned. Its more down to personal choice. But we do find them very boring. I have fished with them. Twice in about 30 plus years. And the longest spell was about 20 minutes. I hate seeing them used during hot spells, as they present the pattern static at the perfect level for those struggling fish which cruise around half dead. Hooking these fish is detrimental to there survival. These same fish are rarely caught on a moving pattern, as they have very little energy to chase. Food for thought Brain. Take care mate. Shaun.

Got onto the water for the first time today, following the Portugal trip. Which I got home from last night. Some great fishing on floating lines with various nymphs with a bit of pace. And this was mainly for the morning. By midday they seem to go off. But down here with the longer daylight and the warm weather has seen the weed burst into life. Before going to Portugal all was fine. Now I have a load of work to sort the water. Just one of the down sides of an established water in summer. Thanks for the comment Ross. Take care mate. Shaun.

I’ve found that slowing my retrieve down to almost nothing (other than keeping in touch with the flies) has helped a lot as the weather remains changeable and mostly cool at Llyn Fawr. A washing line with a sink tip…..orange Fab on the point and two buzzers and letting them drift with the wind gets fish when the going gets slow. Doesn’t suit me as I like a fast figure of eight normally but I’m learning it’s not all about me! Tight lines 🎣

@shaunfishes101
@shaunfishes101 3 месяца назад
Hi Matthew, sorry for delayed reply. Been so busy. This is not as easy as it might seem. With so much stuff out there now. If you are mainly on still waters. And as you are new to the sport I would guess you will not be doing too much in windy conditions. I would go for a 6# rod mid tip and 6# line. Which rod is going to be difficult. But I would not spend much at this time. If you find that you enjoy the sport and then start to improve, then maybe an upgrade will be in order. But I would try a few rods if you can. This can be done either by somebody you know, or a shop with casting pool. I travel a big distance to purchase my rods, as they have a casting pool. But more often somebody on our water has a rod which I can try. Like Justin who has most rods. The rod being more towards mid rather than tip will slow your cast down, giving you a bit of time on the cast, but it will also protect your tippet from those hard hitting fish. The weight of the 6# means you can enjoy the day and go home without a tired arm. A good line for starting out is the Barrio. This is more to the way it is set up. Short front tapper which will handle a lot of different patterns. But also aids loading the rod very quickly. The belly is also short, which then runs into a tapered running line. This means that you will not have to be so critical as to when to shoot the line. You can make as many back casts as you can handle without loosing power. Plus the added bonus of its stretch. This again will protect your tippet. A lot to think about, but don't spend to big yet. Most important when you get on the water don't expect to be casting like a pro and catching fish willy nilly. Get out there and enjoy. There is a lot more to fishing other than catching fish. You will be mixing with other like minded people, and the great bonus of the wild life. Keep in touch, let me know how you get on. Happy to help as much as I can. Shaun.

@shaunfishes101 3 месяца назад
To be honest I am still messing about with the hooks. But they are all Fulling Mill. Either Grab Gape Black Nickel 10 and 8. Heavy Weight Champ 10 or 8. A lot will depend on what size the pattern is going to be. I am tending to go more with the size 8. This is only that the hook does sit a bit further back. Make sure you get the lead wire in place and you will have no problems in getting those fish. This pattern has been used on a lot of waters around the world. And has been very successful. For me its catch rate is around 85%. And is best on an intermediate. So you will experience times when fish will not respond. But these are going to be few and far between. Tight lines. Shaun.

If we were to use the reel we would spend far too much time reeling and pulling off again. When on the rivers in the past, it was always on the reel. On the still waters the reel is used when we have a real hard fighting fish or sometimes the bigger fish. And I am the first to use the reel in these situations. As it does show through some of the videos, and I even explain the purpose of drag. But its a great habit to use the reel. Thanks for the comment. Take care. Shaun.

I went by your recommended line the reed river floater, and I have to say I hate it.. it feels like your got a lump of lead on the end, the head is way to heavy and dives in the water to soon.. I don’t like that orange length in the line either ! I think it’s a beginner’s line..

I would agree with you being a beginner line. This is why it is so popular. It will handle a lot of different patterns. But if like me fishing mainly lighter smaller patterns, this line is not going to be my go too. But for so many they rely on lines like this to get there cast. It sounds like you have your casting in good order. Can I ask what line you have been fishing with. Thanks for the comment. Shaun.

Tied a few of the Hayscastle B&B and fished them on my local water the other day, what a cracking fly, had 8 in two hours, then it just went flat, can't wait to get out again if this damn rain ever stops for more than a couple of hours, all the best Brian

Really nice to hear this Brian. We have just had a local fund raising comp for the welsh ladies. Justin and myself were not to enter. But what we did do is present a fly box with a good few of our top patterns in it. Which had the like of the Hays b/b and the latest Olive Pearl nymph. There were many prizes to be had, such as rods and lines. But the winner of the fly box was more delighted to have the flies oppose the rod and lines. As I have always said I will not present anything other than anything that is more consistent. And for us boys this pattern is very consistent. And not just here on this water. Mind this Olive Pearl Nymph is taken some beating at the moment, and certainly when it comes to picking up the more difficult resident fish. I will hope to get a video on this some time soon. Thanks for the comment Brian, keep in touch mate. Shaun.

Thanks so much Stuart. Ye there has been some great fish coming out recently, and they are mainly all resident fish. This is easy to tell as the size of stock fish going in at moment. Thanks again mate. Take care. Shaun.
