Justin and myself set out to cover three waters over the Christmas Break. We covered a lot of miles. This is the last of the three. This had to be the most challenging but very rewarding.
Justin is a machine. I had 3 out of Ellerdine yesterday, and when I left I don't think anyone had had more. May be my memory, but I seem to remember winter fishing being easier than I have found it the last couple of years.
Fishing is changing. We are aware of insect life on the decline. So if insect life is in decline, I am thinking aquatic life must be also. So it makes sense fish will react accordingly. I have been telling the boys about this for the last two years. But a lot of people will not accept this. If this continues, its the fishery that will struggle. Do the fishery's start feeding the fish. As every water will have resident fish, but what have they to eat. I am sure we will all find out soon enough, as the decline is now speeding up. Our Di was at Ellerdine last week. Have not spoke to him yet. Will see him Thursday on our water. Ye Justin is something else. Take care mate. Catch up soon.
@@shaunfishes101 I am not sure how much feeding the average stockies does once released these days. I certainly haven't seen as much dry fly action as years ago and even seem to be less damsels hatching and fry bashing. You could argue I guess that that means that there will be more fish willing to take a fly, but on the whole I am not sure that is the case. There are some private waters near me that feed the fish after stocking, and still seem to have decent catch rates. I agree that things seem to be changing.... shall we blame Brexit, covid or the situation in Ukraine for this one ;)
@@oldgold5848 I think you will find that fish have the ability as you know to slow there metabolism down, which they do in winter when food is scarce. I have a hunch that they will slow there metabolism down for longer periods IF there is a lack of food. The dominant fish will survive. But what we could see a bit more of over time is a lot more slender fish. If we start to see more of these. I think this is a good sign that aquatic life is also on the decline. For a lot of people out there they will not notice if they have only fished for the last four or so years. Three or more years ago was the last time I recall large buzzer hatches. Yes we still get buzzer hatches, but not on the scale they were. The largest consistent hatch last year for us, was the caenis. Fish respond to the larger hatches, and to get them of it is very difficult. I did a video a few years ago showing a Hawthorn fly drift across the surface. The fish were busy on the Caenis. The Hawthorn Fly drifted to the opposite bank unharmed. To be honest I am not looking forward to what could be. It could mean an end to catch and release. As fish may not be able to survive in a water with so little food. Unless feeding with pellets. And we all could be fishing for stock fish. For me this would be a night mare. I enjoy experimenting. Stock fish will attack any thing. But on the bright side, I think the fishing is going to be good tomorrow. I think it will be blamed on the war. They will tell us the insects wanted to keep there heads low, due to the amount of missiles flying around.
@@shaunfishes101 I was saying to the good lady the other day...remember what windscreens used to look like on long journeys in the 70's, compared to now...? Remember all the dung flies on compass, or indeed the wrigglers that used to be in the water butts that I used to net out and feed the fish? Much less of all of them ... like my hair and sanity, largely disappeared!
@@oldgold5848 My car in the seventies was so slow. The flies would fly around my car. I could not hit one if I tried. I would feed my fish the bugs. The only thing They get lucky enough to eat now, is the flying Ant. I run around the garden with a little fish net scooping them up. Mind don't even get to many of them no more. I have a problem with hair. No problem to me mind, as I wear glasses. Take them off before looking in the mirror. All's Fine.
i fished wollaston a few years back used a bung and a green worm bung went under and it took off at a slow pace ...........was surprised when i hauled in a 13.6 common carp in that channel you mentioned ;-)
Justin did say he spotted a few carp. Not me. My eye sight is not very good. Its amazing really. Try to target them and we could end up with a blank. Then you put a Green Worm on. Fair play that's a cracking carp on the fly. I am yet to catch a carp on the fly. Will have a go one day. Great hearing from you Steven. Take care mate. Shaun.
Wow fishery looks stunning definitely want to try it sometime. Well done Justin in the money and the fish. Nice take on this video switching between fisherys. Well done both of you.
Honestly it could not have been better timed. As I farted the fish dashed away. Justin and myself laughed about that through out the day. My belly was jumping with silent laughter when ever I thought of it. But it is great to have a bit of fun. On our local water this sort of thing is quite regular. We often spend as much time fooling around as we do fishing. Great to hear from you again Callum. Take care mate. Shaun.
On point again Shaun. Another good video. I think the 'Emerger' at around 6 minutes may have spooked them for you. I like the look of the new pattern. Would put a bet that it would kill them at my local. Had a very stiff day on Sunday with my son blanking and I managed 4. Would prefer him to catch and me to blank to keep him interested. Justin would be the guy at the other bank that drives me nuts. Some machine. All the best.
Funny enough that has been mentioned about that Emerger a few times. I really think we are on to something here. We will have to grasp this with both hands a give it a good work out. I am sure if we all get onto this one we could sniff something out. Oh the new pattern I have already started tweaking it again. But wont say to much. But it was good. On the water twice with it now. Full marks for both trips. But the nymphs are even better. You will see them properly soon. Thanks for the comment Mike. Shaun.
Great video as ever Shaun and refreshing to see a video of fisherman blanking as there are times when it becomes difficult…….I would also venture that everyone has that one mate they go fishing with that always seems to get a fish even when the rest of the boys are barren
Ye you are correct. Justin keeps telling me he will blank one day. I think he is playing the mind game. Hope I am there when he does. I do go back to that day mind. And I do know I should have done better. But I am over the years becoming sort of easy come easy go. But a good cuppa goes a good way to fixing things. Thanks for the comment Stuart. Take care mate. Shaun.
Good entertainment Shaun! Like the two venues mix as well. Not sure on the fart & release :) See you 11th March mate! (or Sun 12th onwards) All the best.
Ye I think we are back from our fishing trip 11th or 12th. Will see you as soon as we get back. A few big fish getting picked up at Hayscastle at the moment. Lets hope its still fishing as good when you get here.
Jog my memory Leigh, where was it you meet him. I don't want to make his head any bigger, but yes he is one of the best I have fished with. And I have fished with some really good fishers.
@@leighpaterson9497 Yes a proper pair. All they have to do is concentrate on what I tell them. Then it will be the full package. Catch fish and make the best brew.
Different Shaun but really enjoyed it, regarding people breaking wind at your local water you leave me and Ros out of it, great catch up over last weekend mate the pearly nymph was on fire, keep up the good work mate, take care
I have got the perfect pairing for that pearly nymph. Its the weighted version. It work a treat on Sunday. Can't wait to show you. Thanks for the comment Ray.
Hope you see this before tomos. The mini lure has had another load of fish. Sunday I lost count. Thursday about 8 and fished about an hr or so with Justin this morning. Had another 4. And if the hook never came loose I think it could be closer to around 40 fish in total. Intermediate line. Start higher in the water with long steady draws. Keep it moving. none of this jerky shit. No good. Go deeper same thing. If that fails. Dead slow on the bottom. Then if nothing have a cuppa. RHS of Island towards cabin and around in towards the arm. Good look mate.
I would never bet against Justin catching any less than three or four in a day. Miss fishing in Wales , will be back one day. Say hi to Justin for me please Shaun.:)
Well if he did it would be a one off. Be good to see you down this way again. Water is looking great at the moment, and getting better. I missed a big fish last week, and an even bigger one last Sunday. I have a feeling that I could be getting something nice really soon. Oh that big fish you will see it on a video soon. Well you will not see it, as it never broke the surface. Ye I will pass on the message to Justin. Take care mate. Shaun.
Shit Mark don't get confused. That was not me. It was my Alien twin stepping in. I told him before he went, catch a few, but don't catch more than Justin as he will be upset. So sorry you Blank Mark. Ever tried Golf. Thanks for the comment Mark. Take care mate. Shaun.
Shit I am so sorry, have just noticed your comment as I was checking for something else. Having a run of blanks is no fun for sure. It becomes a mental block after a while. Not so long back I was struggling to get a fish in the morning session. I knew I had to deal with it mentally first, then get on the water with a real positive approach. I am fine now. Confidence is how it should be, and I can already feel the next fish on the line. Picture the water in your mind. Put that perfect line out. Your slowly taking in the slack line, then you can feel the slightest of weight on the line. The line is looking so good. All of a sudden you sense something is going to happen. The line goes really tight and the fish is on. A positive approach at all times. Good luck mate. And sorry again. Shaun.
Hiya Shaun, haven't fished it this season, since Dwayne left really, always had a good session's at Woolaston, top and bottom pool and a good breakfast too, was told the fishing was difficult of late, heard it was £95 on the bottom pond, but now the prices have been reviewed.
Honestly Mike both Justin and myself think this is going to turn tits up. We was told of there plans. I did advise. But they would have none off it. I think they should get a few tips from around a few established waters. This is what I have done. Or you learn the hard way. But I have had quite a few people now mention how difficult this water has become. Yes you will have the odd few days. But overall its sounding not so good.
I am not sure if I did mention in the video. I think I did. Anyway, a lot of the waters around this area do a tagged trout. Only a few of them. Every angler has an option to put money in the pot. This will then mount up until somebody catches that fish. Sometimes this can mount up to a lot of money. On this water at the time they had a few Blue trout left in the lake. So they decided to put the pot on the blue. I did try to get the fishery manager to have a bet with me that Justin was going to catch the blue. He would not. But Justin did catch it anyway. He then had all the money, and the pot starts at all over again from 0. Good eh.
There is a load of things about this line which is great. One of the best lines I have used. It costs £130. and lasted me about 8 months. Mind I do a lot of fishing. This is my second line, as the first had to be replaced by the company due to a fault. There is a problem with the line. we know of three lines with the same problem. They crack just behind the back tapper. The company now decline the problem. Its Rio single spey slick cast. At the moment I am using wolf tt. so far so good.
Another great video Shaun. Liked the mix and really thought the casting in slow motion worked a treat! What’s Justin’s secret? We know he’s a fishing machine..but how does he work? Lol. Cheers! Jonathan P.S I wondered if your fart echoed across the lake? 😂
Honestly this video I thought was going to break me. As I said in the video that I had lost a load of the footage, or all of the footage from the main camera. Which had some really great content on. During edit, I had almost finished, then it all went tits up. I was working on the end bit. Went back to the main video and it had all gone. God knows what I had done. I pressed recover over and over. Nothing. I had to redo the whole lot. And if listening carefully, you will hear me say we are now coming up the start of February. This is because it should have been out over a week ago. Justin's secret, ye. Any body work that one out will be worth a fortune. As Justin says he is doing the same as every body. And for me on that day, ye I think the fish were worried about me farting. So they kept there distance. Ye it was loud enough to scare the fish. Dead funny mind. I think that day will be remembered for the fart more than the blue.
Shaun, I do fish quite a bit of flat water fly fishing during the week near home here in Atlanta. The water is warm, and we target primarily sunfish, crappie, and the various black bass (all in family Centrarchidae). On the weekends, though, I am often driving to mountain water to fish for trout. Do you mostly fish flat water out of preference? Or is it difficult to find public access on rivers in the UK?
It sounds you have a great mix of fishing. And the mountain rivers sound great. I have fished rivers all my life from the age of four. Still waters was just a gap filler during closed season on the river. Sadly our rivers in my area and a lot of other areas have declined so badly. The fish stocks are so low now. I used to fish for Atlantic Salmon, Sea Trout and Brown Trout. Our rivers have declined so bad that strong restrictions apply. One of which I am against. Its the catch and release of the Salmon. The water quality is not good enough to release a Salmon after a fight. Some rivers have enough oxygen for the fish to have a chance. But for the rivers around here, most are private and can cost anything from £70 up to £5000. per year. Plus you will require a rod license about £75 a year. I my get onto a river again one day. For Brown Trout.
Its good mate, and getting better. Really looking forward to the next few months of fishing. And hope we all have some good old buzzer hatches this year. Last two years has seen a massive decline. Thanks for the comment. Take care. Shaun.
@@shaunfishes101 fingers crossed for a good buzzer hatch up here in Scotland it's not to bad we even get some buzzer fishing in now all the best Sean mate oh my name is RAB anyways tightlines bro.
@@Loyalist-ul6qm Been up your end of the world a good few years ago. Me and a few of the boys on our motor bikes. We toured the UK. Those bugs up yours did not like me. They tried to eat me. At one point they got inside my lid. That was the worst ever. Nice one Rab.
Yes one of the boys turned up on the water last week with one, and a big smile on his face. McKenzie is not the first rod that comes to mind for a lot of people when thinking up grade. So I think sales may have been slow. And I am not one to promote a rod. There is a lot more to a rod, as to why it would be right for us or not. Thanks for the comment Trevor. Shaun.
Shit now I am stuck. The boys know more than me about the net I use most of the time. As they have them. No name on it, and it was a gift from one of the boys. I will ask them and get back to you with it. The other nets we use a good bit is Whychwood Rover Sea trout size. This seems to be a popular net on most waters. Get back to you soon Gary.
Arran just got back to me. All he put was Sharpes of Aberdeen. Check that out. Any problems get back to me. Oh size wise we normally go middle. like Sea Trout size.
Thanks for that Shaun, checked the Sharpes ones & they look good, but have decided to go for the Wychwood rover net. Thanks again. And keep up the video's really enjoying them & learning a lot.
@@shaunfishes101 I only ask cause of the line mate it is shooting like a 8 # I thought you fished a six. Is the fly line that Rede fishing line mate I've tried to buy it but it's always sold out man anyway nice to hear from you all the best tightlines.
@@ibelieve1468 Ah got it. I did think it was a piece of rubber that dangled down, so when you fart it would flap and make a great noise. This thing sounds quite cool. Clint Eastward wears his gun really low. Mind he has very long arms. And his mate Clyde wears his around his ankle. Thanks mate.
