Hi, I'm Claire! I published my debut novel when I was 16, and now I’m an award-winning author of paranormal thrillers (my book "They Stay" won the Grand Prize at the 2023 Writer's Digest Self-Published Book Awards and is the first in a five-book series).
Writing is my favorite thing in the world. I've dedicated my life to learning as much about it as I can and, on this channel, I'm excited to share what I've learned with you.
Writing advice on RU-vid can be pretty vague. I wanted to make this channel different. In my videos, I don't just tell you what I think you should do-I show you exactly how to do it. I share techniques that have genuinely improved my own writing, so you can try them out and see if the same strategies help you.
My goal is to provide practical, actionable advice that you can apply to your own writing. Whether you're just starting out or looking to refine your skills, I hope you'll find something useful here. Let's write together!
I can’t write well in the moment so I get all my dry thoughts down and then go back and reword and flavor it later. It’s tedious but works so much better for me lol
Very helpful. I have a concept for my first that's been floating around in my brain for months and I've finally decided that it won't leave me alone until I write it down - it very naturally and effortlessly fits all of these buttons, which gives me a lot of confidence as someone who is prone to shutting myself down before I even start something.
@@_Nailiv_ Effect is the noun (special effects, had a powerful effect), while affect is the verb (the rain affected my plans). Effects are the result of something but an affect changes or influence things (when you affect something, it causes an effect lol). Sometimes there are exceptions, but generally you should go with the above rule.
Ohh nooo I missed your live again!😢 These are such nice live sessions I'd love to talk alongside and hear the awesome advice! Hopefully I'll be able to catch up before work if I can next time.
Wow this is so true. I’m writing my first long book series for the first time and I almost have 200 pages of the first book completed. I keep telling myself that I’ll keep writing everyday or that I’ll write 1 chapter per day but I always end up writing a little bit every few weeks. The only thing I need is motivation to help me 😭
I usually write in first person limited and I’m pretty good at grounding the characters but I’m also working on my first full third omnipotent story and oh boy am I having a doozy.
Every time someone mentions cutting adverbs I like to point out that the most successful author in the history of the world uses adverbs like she's getting paid for each one.
I’m not a real writer yet, I came up with a bunch of ideas and tried to write stories, I’ve only finished one first draft but writing is 100% my dream I adore making characters and stories, I hope I can get to that part soon if I can even finish a first draft 🥲 Even though yep that part 100% sucks, I did try with the one story that I finished it’s first draft and it was so bad omg
Deleting filtering words is a great way to make your prose more active in areas where you’re looking to show instead of tell in your writing. There are some instances where using filtering words is actually good, like: - In dialogue, if trying to convey a character’s voice (eg, “I feel like that’s a bad idea”) - If you need to convey an unimportant emotion quickly, and this is the simplest way to do it - If you need to remind the readers that you’re transitioning into a flashback or memory But, like adverbs, you want to limit the use of them to make your writing as active as possible.
I that your video is in regard to removing filter words from your work. I soon that this is not always good advice. I to ignore it. I feel that if I do my writing will be greatly improved.
ProWritingAid has a Lifetime purchase option. If you go to their pricing page, it gives you the option to purchase monthly, yearly, or lifetime. I like how its desktop app lets you open Scrivener and Word files within the app, without the need to paste the text into the window.
