I have been working for a 20 years with tv content as sound mixer, and never thought about dipped and undipped stems at all. Make em separately and the same time!) Thomas, you are a genius.
in nuendo it is more easy. You just throw production or folly footsteps audio file in DAW, DAW breaks audio in samples and assighns each step according it`s pitch and volume to MIDI notes, then you simply plays the steps in real time watchin video
Had always used Cloudlifter with my SM7b, switched to Soyuz Launcher, improved my sound immediately. Great video, wonderful command of audio principles and admirably clear presentation. Thank you!
Glad Reaper is working well for you. As professionals we have to use Pro Tools, since that is what all of the post production companies use. But for hobbyists or people who aren't expected to collaborate with other pros, any DAW will work!
Sorry I wasn`t able to watch the stream while it was Live brodcasting, but I can do it any time on your channel. So many detailed and very explained information!!! Thanks alot for the sream.
@ThomasBoykin can you explain it to me? Or is there a video I can watch? I already recorded and sync the ADR, but it still sounds too clean. What effects should I use?
before anything else I'd like to point out i discovered this GEM of a channel by seeing ONE OBS sound guide, moving on.... THOMAS! i love the sound work! idk if you also did the cgi and the camera angles, but it's such a smooth blend between everything, i love it!
Hey Thomas, Love you channel and some great information on here. I just have a question about monitoring through your input on you mix channel. Do you get a delay though that?
Sounds great. So cool to have a high quality finished mix to use as a guide and reference for those of us who are practicing our chops. Thanks again... I guess Josh never did get his refund...
Bro did better lesson than many online courses. Thank you for sharing knowledge, as someone who does music production and radio production this series has done me a lot to get into sound for films. Thank you.
Can you make a full post production series for davinci resolve? Maybe with the same if not similar workflow as the pro tools series. Thank you so much for the videos. They are very underrated.
I work in Fairlight. Whilst it’s definitely getting better and has potential I’d really recommend sticking to protools unless you absolutely must use Resolve. I have to deal with a lot of bugs and workarounds.
Sorry for missing the live stream but these have been amazing. Thanks Tom for sharing your workflow and knowledge. I had a question about these final stages in the last mix pass of a project. 1. When would you use a sidechain to help make room for dialogue while still keeping the music blasting per directors notes usually? 2. When exporting all your assets, 5.1, st, etc; how do you make sure the discreet mono channels correspond with the theater that is being played back? i.e L R C LFE RS LS in that order? or does it change with wherever you're sending it out to? Sorry if its not clear, can clarify if needed.
Tom, these livestreams have been incredibly educational and enjoyable, I bought the practice project but haven’t had time to work on it just yet, but all the same I hope you’ll continue doing the livestreams. Your tutorials are great as well and you have become one of the leading educators in the audio post-production field. Keep it up man, good stuff!
Hi Tom, when mixing score, what are some guides to not step over what the music editor /composer delivered? Do only the directors and producers have say to remove elements from music stems? Do cue changes land on the mixer or does it go back to the music editor/composer for revision? Simply letting them know a cue was changed in the mix sufficient? 44:59
I usually start with what’s in front of me. Then if an issue comes up while working with the director I will make suggestions. If there is a music editor or willing composer I will kick the changes back to them. If not, I can do them myself
Gosh these are great video! So much useful detail! @4:37 Is the "Guide Track" referred to here simply the editors stereo mix of the tracks in the AAF? Thx.
Amazing video! I've tried to recreate this in pro tools, and I'm in RX Editor now, the only problem is I have standard RX so I Don't have de-construct. Is there an alternative module for the siren you would suggest for tackling the siren? Thanks.
I can't help to notice that on minute 28:03 you've kept some footsteps in the dialogue track. Shoudn't they be on the PFX tracks? When do we know that?
Here is a video suggestion. Play a segment of great audio (along with the video of course) and explain what makes it great. Play a segment of bad audio and explain what makes it bad. I don't know what type of content would be legal to use, but if you could find some it would make for a great video.
Hey Thomas, you did a great Job there! I can now control my SM7b better than before! Unfortunately at the Start I can't copy/paste your preset Setting. So I did a little bit homework and now it should work 🫠 Can somebody confirm this - the Preset Settings are below: <TDRNova _preset_name="SM7bNew" bandSelected_1="Off" bandActive_1="Off" bandGain_1="0.0" bandQ_1="0.50" bandFreq_1="50" bandType_1="Bell" bandDynActive_1="Off" bandDynThreshold_1="0.0" bandDynRatio_1="2.0" bandDynSplit_1="On" bandDynAttack_1="20" bandDynRelease_1="200" bandSelected_2="Off" bandActive_2="Off" bandGain_2="0.0" bandQ_2="0.60" bandFreq_2="120" bandType_2="Bell" bandDynActive_2="Off" bandDynThreshold_2="0.0" bandDynRatio_2="2.0" bandDynSplit_2="On" bandDynAttack_2="10" bandDynRelease_2="80" bandSelected_3="Off" bandActive_3="On" bandGain_3="-0.2" bandQ_3="0.60" bandFreq_3="724" bandType_3="Bell" bandDynActive_3="Off" bandDynThreshold_3="0.0" bandDynRatio_3="2.0" bandDynSplit_3="On" bandDynAttack_3="5.0" bandDynRelease_3="160" bandSelected_4="Off" bandActive_4="On" bandGain_4="6.4" bandQ_4="0.53" bandFreq_4="2457" bandType_4="High S" bandDynActive_4="On" bandDynThreshold_4="-36.9" bandDynRatio_4="1.5" bandDynSplit_4="On" bandDynAttack_4="3.0" bandDynRelease_4="40" hpSelected_master="Off" hpActive_master="On" hpFreq_master="74" hpType_master="12dB/oct" lpSelected_master="Off" lpActive_master="On" lpFreq_master="13300" lpType_master="6dB/oct" bandGain_wide="0.0" bandDynActive_wide="Off" bandDynThreshold_wide="0.0" bandDynRatio_wide="1.5" bandDynAttack_wide="8.0" bandDynRelease_wide="200" bypass_master="Off" delta_master="Off" dryMix_master="0.0" gain_master="0.2" eqAutoGainParam="On" qualityParam="Precise" channelsParam="Stereo" analyzerModeParam="Analyzer: Out" displayEqRangeParam="-/+ 12 dB" displayFFTRangeParam="48 dB" sidechainModeParam="Int SC" analyzerSpeedParam="Normal"/>
