This is an invaluable tutorial for anyone new to ADR, I wish I'd had this some years back when I was working on my first feature, great lesson Thomas!

A good ADR director can make an okay session great and have the actors do as many takes as needed in order to get the *right* one.

Yes on shows with a real budget many hands make light work

Great video as always, Tom! It seems to me that this ADR recording session wasn't a loop recording, which tends to help in ADR. If the actors have time to prepare, think and plan between each take, it will rarely work in ADR, because they will naturally try to act again on sync, instead of just repeating the exact text, intonation and performance on time. I find that in traditional ADR, which is made to repeat the lines with recording problems, the actors should be focused on what they are hearing, instead of trying to act to the screen. When they focus on repeating over and over a take through what they hear, they will eventualy get the rhythm, the tone and everything will fall better in place. If they try to act to every new take, it will make every take very diferent from one another, the sinc will almos always be drifting and the tone will be harder to match. Anyway, that is my take on it. Anyone agree?

Yes, when I record adr I usually don’t even use the video for the actor. It’s an exercise in doubling the performance. However when the performance needs to change that doesn’t work

@@ThomasBoykin Thanks for the reply. Perfect! Yes, it only works when repeating the lines and the performance. Your content is always awesome and very helpful! I only posted this comment so this gets repeated more often. Recently I received some ADR that was almost unusable because of that and the actor had to go back and re-record some lines I simply couldn't save.

for outdoor scenes what do you need to tweak to make it not sound like it's recorded in a studio?

Usually the adr recording methods

@ThomasBoykin can you explain it to me? Or is there a video I can watch? I already recorded and sync the ADR, but it still sounds too clean. What effects should I use?

EQ, saturation, volume, background SFX, and foley will all make it blend better

Thanks Tom! Do you add reverb to ADR as well or do you find that fill and EQ match is enough to make it sit right?
@ThomasBoykin

Reverb only if it needs it

Is there a common practice when people are utilizing different DAWs on the same project? e.g. dialogue editing in pro tools and then re-recording mixer working in Logic?
@ThomasBoykin
@ThomasBoykin 2 месяца назад
That is an uncommon situation. However an AAF would work.

Thanks Tom for the tutorials! I have a question for the fill: What is your opinion about using Ambience Match to create fills? I have seen some people using it a lot, but also some people are totally against using it.

Doesn’t work that great in my opinion

Great walkthrough as always! So can I assume you feel like reverb isn't necessary in these two examples?

Hi Tom, I’m wondering… Do you actually think this scene needed ADR, or did you loop it just for the purpose of the tutorial?
@ThomasBoykin
@ThomasBoykin 3 месяца назад
No, it does not need adr. The actors actually did this without any input from me.

Hi Tom! Just following up here. I had commented on another video about download issues for the practice project I bought. The download stopped midway twice, and I couldn’t open the ZIP file as a result. It no longer allows any more downloads. I tried to leave a comment with my email like you had asked, but RU-vid deleted my comments with my email address for some reason. How should I get in touch with you to get this resolved? Thanks!
