I’m Mike from Portsmouth, England (mike_grogan@btinternet.com). I have a life long passion for music resulting in an ever growing collection of Vinyl, CDs, DVDs, memorabilia etc. Also collection of Guitars. Musical tastes are eclectic but include The Beatles, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, The Clash, Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie, Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Elvis Costello, Comsat Angels, The Sound, Killing Joke……..The Bunnymen….oh and Zeppelin…and The Who, not forgetting The Police…..oh yes and the Pistols! …….and many more…….oh and don’t forget Noddy and the boys!…..and many more…..Basically just love music!! 😃……I really shouldn’t have started this list because I also really like Polly Harvey, Gang of 4, Joy Division, Stranglers, The Damned, The Ruts, Red House Painters, Peter Gabriel and others………………and breathe 🧘‍♀️ oh and of course Black Sabbath!

OMG !!! Your Clash box sets are crazy good ! ☺The one I would be interested to get is Bowie's Rock n Roll Star box. I met Zowie back in '91.. Played pool with him ( he was dressed as a her ) and he chatted me up for a long while about his father and Paul McCartney.. Evidentially one of his best friends at the time.

That Gabriel boot, I also had it in the late 70s, side 4 opened up my ears to how fantastic Tony Levin was and is (I didn't have Berlin or Exposure yet). So I already had all four members on boots (Fripp on this one and KC Amsterdam 73, Bruford with Yes and Belew with Bowie and TH) when I saw Discipline in Amsterdam 15/5/1981, three days before they went into the studio to record the album. Now, THAT was a life changer.

I didn't know Iggy was of Danish/Norwegian descent, but many people in the Americas are a bit of a mixed bag! I think I'm fairly typical, being mainly English/Scottish/Irish/Dutch, with a bit of German and allegations of some Swiss. Your Sabbath records raise the interesting question of how many copies of one record you should have. I think my maximum is four, and these are all 60s records with a stereo and mono version, so two is the minimum.
@pc31thevinylpoliceman

‘….allegations of some Swiss’ 😂 I love that. You certainly have a fair share of mixed decent which must make you a rounded, balanced person 😁 I’m also a mixed bag, primarily English and Irish……I think! Four looks a reasonable max although I must admit I break that max for several albums. Love the stereo/ mono rational. Mike

I do have original US pressings of everything except Give ‘em enough rope and Sandanista that I purchased when they came out but gave the remasters of those now. I Saw them in ‘82 and met Joe and got a pic taken with him on the boardwalk in Asbury Park, NJ. I still have that pic and it’s framed. With regards to The Clash live bootleg set, if I have one criticism of the Clash, it's that they very rarely mixed up their setlist. Of course, with each new year and new album songs were added, but the live setlists never really seemed to change very much. Looking at the setlist for that bootleg, as usual it's very predictable. They were an awesome live band, one of the best, but they generally stuck to the hits. I've always found this somewhat disappointing considering their huge output in such a short space of time. Sure, 'Safe European Home', 'I Fought The Law', 'London Calling', 'White Man In Hammersmith Palais' etc etc etc - they're all classics but they never seemed to give much exposure to the 'lesser known' album tracks. For example I've read somewhere that 'Lost In The Supermarket', 'Hateful' and 'I'm Not Down' - all great tracks which would be fantastic live - were never performed live, or if so, maybe only one or twice. Plus from Sandinista, great though 'Magnificent Seven' and 'Police On My Back' are, there are 36 tracks to choose from, but apart from those two, and sometimes 'One More Time', they rarely played many more from that album (OK of those 36 tracks on Sandinista some of them would clearly not work live, but you get my point). I love them and 'safe' is not exactly a word you would associate with the Clash live (apart from 'Safe European Home' maybe ;-) ) but setlist wise, I always thought they did tend to play it pretty safe.
@pc31thevinylpoliceman
@pc31thevinylpoliceman 5 дней назад
You’ve really started something! 😂 I’m now trawling through my bootlegs. I’ve quickly found Charlie Don’t Surf, Lightning Strikes, Somebody Got Murdered, clampdown, The Leader, Junco, Ivan so I guess it really depends upon what tour is it. Also, it’s that old dilemma for bands that fans want to hear classics and tend to be less happy hearing new material. But without doubt the classics do tend to be included in most sets. It’s a hard one but as you say they were one of the best live bands, their energy was fantastic. You got me trawling the boots now so I shall carry on 😂 Great comments, I really appreciate you watching and commenting. Mike
@theflyintheointment
@theflyintheointment 5 дней назад
@@pc31thevinylpoliceman I’m guessing that was one of the Bond’s bootlegs? I had an incredible tape cassette of one of the Bond’s shows which if I remember featured all those songs and finished with Washington Bullets (another one which was rarely played). As a side note I know there were many Bond’s bootlegs, which were varying in sound quality, but the one I had was absolutely blistering - they were seriously on form that night. I’m pretty sure mine must have been a radio broadcast as the sound quality is absolutely second to none and it started with someone saying “lets get on with it, The Clash, in concert…..” before the band launched into London Calling. But yeah, not only one of the best live bootlegs I’ve ever heard, but one of the best live albums I’ve ever heard full stop - official or unofficial. Back to the tracklisting - as you say there was a lot of Sandinista material that you mentioned, which does seem something of an anomaly - obviously Bonds was between Sandinista and Combat Rock so I guess it does make sense they played a few songs from Sandinista, but after that and pre/after Combat Rock, most of those tracks got dropped again which is a shame, because they really worked live. I dunno, maybe I’m wrong, but it’s just an observation looking at Clash live videos, bootlegs and online setlists that there was generally a very rigid core that made up the majority of the setlists which they didn’t tend to stray too far from. The Bond’s example is a happy anomaly for me because the Sandinista and Combat Rock phase is my absolute favourite Clash period - I find that period the most interesting in their story, and those are my two favourite Clash albums. (PS I wrote a reply to your comment on our Cut The Crap thread which strangely didn’t seem to post - I’ll try and post it again!)

I'm a massive Clash fan but I've always found it interesting how the band and record label have essentially airbrushed Cut The Crap out of their history and back catalogue. OK you could say it isn't REALLY a Clash album as Mick and Topper were long gone by then, but it is still TECHNICALLY a Clash album. Don't get me wrong - it's one of the worst albums ever committed to record, but I can't think of any other examples where a band has simply all but airbrushed an album from their history.

For me, #-1 "Muswell Hillbillies", #-2 "The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society", #-3 "Lola versus Powerman", #-4 "Something Else", #-5 "Arthur", #-6 "Face to Face", #-7 "Sleepwalker", #-8 "Low Budget", #-9 "Misfits", #-10 "Everybody's In Showbiz". I could not agree with you more regarding The Kinks 'not having' a George Martin for a producer. But, I have to wonder if Sir Ray's ego would have clashed with someone as incredibly talented as the late Sir George Martin? I've often listened to songs such as "Get Back In Line" and "Apeman" (two songs that I have loved forever) and thought, 'the production is lacking at the beginning of each track, and why wasn't it noticed'? I still listen to The Kinks, often. Though I dislike quite a bit of the seventies and eighties songs I still believe that The Kinks music of the sixties was better than any other band of that era.

Hi Major, or should I say hello Sir 😁 that’s a great top 10. Muswell number 1, well I have to say it is for me as well some days. It’s a really interesting discussion point about Sir George, but I agree he would, I believe, have made a massive difference to the production. Their sixties output was just incredible. I really appreciate you commenting. Mike

Yes, I understand what you say and agree. I especially don’t like the way he talks about Joe Strummer who is my musical hero. But…..it’s John. He’s just out there and so entertaining and outspoken. He was an absolute gentleman to talk to, and had great stories but he could be brutal about some. Mike

What a standout episode! A meet and greet with John Lydon! How exciting that must have been for you. And then the old bastard spent more time chatting up the Mrs instead of his lifelong fan lol. Typical guy. I know Ive heard JL make remarks about the Clash, but does he have an actual beef with Joe? An upgrade to Farewell to Kings is smashing. I love that album so much. I feel so vindicated now because of your appreciation of Hole’s Live Through This! I have loved that album since it came out and have always had to defend it. Now that the King of Cool has given his endorsement I will use this video as reference in future arguments. As a Blondie fan I understand your initial reaction to their debut but it might grow on you. More Clash bootlegs! Fantastic video. Cheers Mike!

Hi Gary, have you recovered from your fantastic weekend meeting up with all the guys and Marcia. Watching Mike’s videos it looked a real hoot, fun and frolics all round. Sorry I’m late with this one, I read your comments on the road and just released I didn’t get back to you…..rude bleeder! 😂 John was absolutely brilliant, great entertainment and full of fabulous stories. I think he thinks the Clash just followed the Pistols and he’s right that seeing a Pistols performance inspired Joe to form a punk band. But musically The Clash obviously went on to far exceed the Pistols. Joe’s band at the time were the 101ers (so named after the number of the house, a squat, the band were living in at the time). They were headliners in a pub gig and the Pistols were second on bill, but Joe was blown away by the punk music and then realised the pub rock he was doing at time was finished so formed The Clash. But also John and Joe’s politics was miles apart. Im with you Gary, that Hole album is excellent, I’ve played it loads, great material. Now you have a rest Gary from all that beer and vinyl talk at the weekend! Mike

Hi Peter, firstly, sincere apologies in delay in responding. I saved your comment for when back home to actually check my boxset and then forgot! Interesting question because I’ve seen several false track listings for the 1st album across different media. The actual listing on the picture disc in the Hand of Doom boxset is Side One 1. Black Sabbath 2. The Wizard 3. Behind the wall of Sleep 4. NIB Side Two 1. Evil Woman 2. Sleeping Village 3. Warning. So no Wicked World. Hope this helps and apologies again. Mike

I only really know " Rise " from P.I.L , it is a good track. Nice to enjoy a meet and greet where you have not been rushed through. I am interested to know where the venom comes from, about Johns ex-band mates! you mention. I have given " Rush ' a go a few times, if I can find any of there albums might get serious about being a follower. Take care.

@@AttackFromDownunda I think it comes from John not being involved or asked to be involved in the recent Danny Boyle docudrama ‘Pistol’. All the other Pistols were consulted to John’s annoyance. Also, politically I believe John leans to the right and certainly Glen is left. Mike

Hey, cool photo with John! Nice Clash items. I have streamed the new The The single, but I am not sure yet. I didn't buy the single, because shipping here was insane. I have never heard Blondie's debut! Nice 12 inches from Spear of Destiny 🙂

Welcome home Brian Scorsese, hope you had a great time! I knew you’d like the SoD 12” singles. I was amazed when they all popped up in a local store. Underwhelmed by the lead off from Matt Johnson, but it’ll fit ok as an album track on new album, I’m sure it’ll be a good album 🤞Blondie’s debut was disappointing from me. Very lightweight pop, I was expecting raw punk as it 1977. I think Karen has become a PiL covert….ish. Mike

Hiya Mike! What a fun and special experience! Love the video, be fun to get some of Hole on vinyl. I got 3 CD’s but have never heard that first one, what’s it called… Pretty on the Inside. Should do summat about it I supppse? Hey, look! I’ve recently showed Big Audio Dynamite 😊 That IS a a good record. Gary Valentines (Gary Lachman) only Blondie album, he wrote X-Offender! Then worked with Tracey Ullman and Annie Lennox. He did re-join them for their 1997 re-union a bit. Typically I always like bass players who leave bands 😄 Anyhow, good to see you’ve had a great experience and all. Hope you have a splendid July Mike 😎

I also thought that but I did like there first two albums as they had X Offender and Rip Her To Shreds. Let’s be honest, with Harry as the front person, did the music really matter lol.
