Mike, glad you’re doing Mike’s thread. If he changed his channel name to Mike Rankin he would be over 1000. Loved seeing these different bands. I love new music and finding some of the new cool music. Just got another album due to Mr Rankins, Civic. Awesome album. Great stuff as always hon Steve lol. We are slowly taking over the VC under the disguise of Mike

Your collection is amazing, you've got the Silver Jews....I hadn't even heard of them, but I'll check them out now. btw picked up the new one by Civic (got red vinyl....which was nice). If Ben, Steve (All The World’s A Stage) and myself started a band, we could call ourselves Quarter Dozen. Cool selections. I was only familiar with Just Mustard in that lot. So, LOTS to check out! Great video Mike!
Hi Trevor, The Quarter Dozen, like it 😂 I’d buy your album, I bet it would be eggsceptional 😂😂 Fontaines DC are a great band Trevor, as I said, Skinty Fia is an album I’d recommend. It’s post punk, very edgy with a strong Irish element to it. Mind you Murder Capital are pretty intense and dark in a good way. Thanks Trevor! Mike

Hi JT, yes Ben certainly keeps us all up to date with all things Antipodean. You have half the squid output then JT as they have only made so far, but I’m looking forward to a third. Just Mustard have also only made two so far and their second is by far the best called ‘Heart Under’. If you listen I’d be interested to hear your thoughts. Mike

Quite a lot to check out there. With your expansive collection you are the perfect person to do this video. Loved all your nicknames for Ben at the beginning. Hilarious stuff! Ben is hilarious himself. I know it’s always preached about listening to new bands and some people like to turn their nose up at old bands. I have no problem at giving new bands a listen and I do give some a shot but I also buy new music from old bands. My problem is, I prefer records when possible and Ol’ Gary doesn’t have a truck full of cash in his backyard. My budget is limited so I love to get used vinyl when possible. I also am still going back and picking up on music I overlooked over the past five decades. Choices are tough Mike 🤷🏻♂️. I’m sure all of these albums you showed are fantastic. I totally laughed out loud when you said calling Ben a “good egg” was no reflection of his bald head. Ben is a good egg. Great job on this video Mike! Cheers 🍻
I totally get you Gary and agree. I just love old bands and try to discover or keep up to date with new bands, but it is hard because as you say it hits the pocket but also time fitting it all in. I think this is where the vc really helps. I have certainly discovered old and new bands I wasnt aware of before or bands where I was aware but hadnt heard any stuff. But since being in the vc I have gained a lot more knowledge of what's out there. Remember it was you that introduced me to 'War'. I just hadnt, in my circle really been exposed to them and now I own some great records of theirs because of you. Long Live the VC! Mike
Wow, I get so behind on videos some days. Actually, you can put post punk prog rock together and it often works quite well. In fact, ProgArchives has several post punk bands listed in their database. Post punk is quickly becoming a favorite genre for me. Great response with some new bands that I now need to check out.
I know Mike, its so hard to keep up with all the videos, I struggle the same. I feel guilty when I don't respond quick but it's hard sometimes. If I'm asked for my favourite genre, I think it's definitely Post Punk. I seem to buy more of that than anything else these days. Have you got any Squid yet? I love Just Mustard's second album 'Heart Under', it's very atmospheric. Mike
Hi Mike, I know at Silver Jews but Purple Mountains is new to me so I’ll have to give it a listen. Big 👍 to all the others. My two ‘newer/younger’ bands of the moment are The Bug Club and Ghost Woman. Both quiet different. The Bug Club are a trio from Wales, guitar based indie with a bit of a whimsical feel who love a good guitar wig out mid tune. It fair to say they don’t take themselves too seriously, very good live it you get the chance. Ghost Woman are a duo from the states. 12 string electric guitar and drums, probably best described as Psych with a smattering of Krautrock thrown in for good measure. Hi Andy, I hope you’re doing well? The Purple Mountains album is very classy, easy listening. Kinda Americana, story telling, really good. Give it a listen I think you’d like it. I hadn’t heard of the Silver Jews, but I will now seek out. That’s three interesting bands you’ve given me to check out Dream Wife, The Bug Club and Ghost Woman. I love that Purple Mountains album. I had a few Silver Jews albums and I read really good reviews of Purple Mountains when it was released. Very sad that he left us so soon after that.
I think Ben loved those impersonations they were both so realistic it was hard to establish the real Benshire! 😂 Purple Mountains excellent album. Very easy to listen to, classy, such a shame the guy was in such a bad place. I read a little more about him. Apparently his Father was a big corporate lobbyist and was known as Mr Evil. Allegedly his son (Purple Mountains), was so embarrassed/ ashamed of his Father’s actions this apparently led him to dark place. Don’t know how accurate this is, but anyhow the album is superb so a great loss. Mike
@@pc31thevinylpoliceman Took a listen the first 4 songs, and I can see why this appeals to you. First song could fit on most Kinks albums. The next 3 reminded me of Pete Yorn. If you're not familiar with him, I would start with his first 2 albums; Music for the morning after, or, Day I Forgot. He is a Bruce disciple. Cheers Mike!
