Hello! My name is Millie and I'm currently training to be a musical theatre performer (singing, dancing and acting). I'm here to demystify this performing arts life and industry through sharing my tips and experiences. So if you are also a dance, musicals or theatre fan, please subscribe for weekly videos!
Please note: everything on here is just my opinion or what I have heard or found out- please double check and do your own research as well! :)
Thank-you so much! Yes, I am aiming to be a performer in musical theatre (and the individual disciplines of acting/dance/singing). My main goal is to be in a West End musical!
Thanks for the video! Very informative! Just wondering, if you decided to not accept an offer, do you need to let the school know? Or just do nothing let the deadline pass?
I'm glad you found it helpful! And thank-you for your question! If you are certain you don't want to accept, then I would recommend declining the offer, using whatever method they ask you to use (or email them to find out how to decline, if they don't say)! That way, they will be able to offer the place to someone else who may be waiting to hear. If you aren't sure yet, then you don't need to rush into a decision, but I think it is more courteous (once you have decided) to let them know if you are choosing to decline, rather than just waiting for the deadline pass. Hope that helps!
That's so interesting, thanks for sharing! Hopefully other people will see this and learn from it that you can get accepted from waitlists weeks later :) And once again, congratulations! 🎉🎉
Hi! Thank-you, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! And thanks for your question :) I don't know how helpful it will be me saying how hard I found it, as it sort of depends on your individual situation - some people would probably find it easier and some would probably find it harder! It was also a little while ago now, so it's a bit hard to remember. I will say though that (from what I can remember) the choreography in the Urdang jazz routine had 2 distinct sections - I think one that was more commercial, and one that was more technical, so there is hopefully more of a chance that there is something you feel comfortable with (and there was also the ballet section of the audition, if that's more what you prefer, plus I think there was possibly some improv in the jazz audition, maybe as part of/before/after the routine? And they might have done some technical jazz exercises in the jazz section too? Sorry, I can't fully remember!) Also, try not to stress about the dance section, even if you feel less confident with dance! You never know what the panel is looking for - it might be they want more singer-actors for that year group anyway. If you are struggling with the steps, I'd suggest to try your best, ask questions if you get the chance, and give them as much performance as you can. If they do have an improv section, you can use that to your advantage to show what you can do in terms of performance and acting, or if there are some dance steps that you do feel confident with, you could show them those too/instead. Lastly, I'd suggest trying to enjoy it! I know I didn't really answer your question, but I hope that helps! (Sorry I can't really remember everything now, hopefully I explained some of what was in the different dance sections with a bit more clarity in the video). And I hope your audition goes well! 😊
hi!! i know that this is a year late however can i ask how you filmed your singing and monologue self tapes?? did you film them from further away or in the same way as you filmed this video?
Hi! No problem at all, thanks for your question. My singing/acting self-tape was filmed with my head and chest, so a bit further away than this video is (I'm standing at a very slight angle, and you can just see the back elbow at the bottom of the shot). It's a bit hard to explain, but does that sort of make sense? If you message me on my Instagram (@theperformingartsandme), I'm happy to send you a screenshot (so you can see the framing), to clarify what I mean! And then my dance video was filmed from much wider out, so you could see my body. Hope that helps!
@@theperformingartsandme I get what you mean by that!! Thank you so much! Also, is it okay to have mistakes in your self tape- esp dance? It’s so hard to not get everything right and I’m worried that with a few things that it looks like I’m not a good listener when the panel look at the self tapes but I don’t want to have the impression that I can’t take direction well
No problem at all! Glad I could help :) In answer to your other question about mistakes, I don't think there is such a thing as a "perfect" tape! There will so often be things that you want to be better. I would say to remember that you are auditioning in order to train, you are not auditioning for a professional job - so I think they should be looking for someone they can train. Also, I agree it's good to try to take direction, but if you do your best, then you can't do any more than that! Obviously I'm not on an audition panel or anything, (I'm just a student myself!), so that's just my point of view, but I hope it helps. I also have a video on self-tapes tips in case you want anymore of my thoughts: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jpusswhmATg.html
How long did it take for Conti to get back to you after your recall? Might be slightly different as I was recalled for BA Hons. It's been almost a week and I'm SO DONE ALREADY 😂
Hmm, I''m not entirely sure, sorry! I remember they emailed me the result, and I think it was more than a week. I totally understand though, time goes so slowly when you are waiting for news! Sorry to not be more helpful, but I hope you enjoyed your audition and that things go well for you!! :)
Hi! Thanks for your question! I always found out either way. Most schools emailed, but depending on the school, it might be that they just update your UCAS rather than contacting you directly? I can't remember very well, but I might have had one which just updated UCAS. Hope that helps!
hey! I just watched your video - Do you go to italia Conti? If so, when you applied was it through uni? I’m applying this year for September 2024- im applying for the BA Acting and I think it’s through ucas, just not sure what happens after that? Do I apply on ucas and then I’ll get an email from conti asking for a self tape? Thanks xx
Hi! I actually go to London Studio Centre, but I did apply to Italia Conti for Musical Theatre! I have a video on my channel about my Italia Conti self-tape and my Foundation recall audition if you are interested in watching that. In terms of application, I think I applied through UCAS, and then I think they contacted me with another form for me to fill out, and then I was also sent the audition information at some point. But I applied a couple of years ago, so it might changed. I'd definitely recommend contacting the admissions team at Italia Conti, and they should be able to help you to make sure you apply in the right way :) I hope your applications go well! Let me know if you have any more questions :)
Hi, that's a great question! I used 5 UCAS applications (which I think was for Bird, Performers, Italia Conti, Urdang, GSA), and then Trinity Laban was through UCAS Conservatoires, and then the rest were by direct application to the schools (Mountview, Emil Dale, Arts Ed, London Studio Centre - and I think MPAA was also done solely by direct application for me). Also, I was offered a place at ICTheatre Brighton through my Performers audition as they were both part of the BIMM Institute , so they then changed my Performers application to ICTheatre on UCAS. So yes, I used lots of different routes to apply! I'd definitely recommend double-checking how you apply to each school (it might have changed from mine) so that you can see what all your options are. Also, some of the UCAS choices also required a direct application, so check this carefully! Finally, it may be possible to apply through UCAS Extra for some schools, and/or to use Clearing to get it added to your UCAS (maybe after having auditioned and secured your place?). I didn't use this myself so I can't say much about it, but if you have more choices than space on your UCAS, it might be worth contacting the schools to see if they could make this work. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any more questions :)
Great! Thank you! Yes i’ve currently selected my 5 though ucas and the rest are either through direct application or a conservatoire! Say if I wanted to audition for more drama schools but they are only through ucas what could i do just contact the schoolb
Yes, I would suggest emailing the school and politely explaining your situation, and asking if there is any way they could allow you to audition without a UCAS application, and then use UCAS Extra or clearing after, if you got a place there. They may say no, but at least you've tried! If you are applying to unis, I think you have the option to wait to get all your UCAS outcomes, and if you didn't get any offers or didn't want to accept them, then use UCAS Extra to apply to one other uni. I don't know if drama schools would do this, so if you're planning to try this way of doing it, I would definitely suggest emailing them first to check (they may not be auditioning or not have spaces to audition by that point etc, so I would recommend you email the school first). Please remember this is all just my opinion! I didn't use any of these routes, so I don't know how they work. But I personally think as long as you are polite, it's probably fine to ask :) I hope that helps a bit! And I hope your auditions go well :)
Hi, I wanted to ask a few questions if you don't mind. 1. Is the vocal warm up without a teacher 2. How long do you get to warm up 3. How will the people at conti call you, will it be via names or a number 4. I'm not confident remembering the ballet moves without a teacher demonstrating it otherwise I will forget. Do they do the moves with you 5. Do you think they will mind hugely if I'm not a quick dance learner 6. Did you perform the audition in a group for acting and singing Sorry I know that's a lot of question ;)
Hi, I'm so sorry for the late reply! Your audition has probably already happened by now, but in case this is any help to anyone, here is what I would say, based off of my experience from doing the Italia Conti Foundation recall! It was quite a while ago so I can't fully remember everything though. 1. The vocal warm-up was with a teacher 2. I can't remember, sorry! I think the vocal warm up was maybe 10 minutes ish? 3. Again, sorry, I can't remember, but I think probably name? 4. I can't really remember, but I think I do remember that they went over the choreography quite a bit with us and were open to us asking questions before we did it a final time. 5. I obviously can't speak for the panel, but I struggle with picking up choreography too, so don't let this put you off! Remember, you are auditioning to train there, not to be perfect already :) 6. We were taken into rooms individually for the singing round and for the acting round. Thank-you for your questions! And once again, apologies for the delayed response!
Thank-you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! And apologies for the late reply. I can't actually remember right now what song the jazz routine was to for this audition! I'm sorry for not giving you an answer to your question. But I don't mind you asking me - I tend to ask a lot of questions of other people in day-to-day life. I may not always answer your question, but if you have any other things you want to ask me, please do feel free to let me know :)
@accesibleforme5058 Hi! I think the year that I did my face to face audition for Urdang, it was in April, but I don't know how long their audition period was. I think that year that they might have had some maybe in March as well, and they could have had some in another or some other months, but I'm not sure - I'd suggest checking with the school if you'd like to know :)
