Still didn't watch the video as to not spoil myself but knowing this books reputatiom I'm not in for a good ride. I have set a goal to read the entire horus heresy so there will be slogs like this that will have to go through. Unlike Dammnation of Pythos, that book is peak fiction fr fr.
I'm really glad that you mentioned the lack of slaneesh in this book, the weird over the top extreme stuff was what made the HH novel Fulgrim one of my favourites, and i was really disappointed that we couldn't get a similar novel in 40k
The best part? Each of these is the "standard" version of each biomorph. Tyranids adapt incredibly rapidly. That's why there's no one strategy to deal with them, because they will evolve to deal with it. Just to give a bit of perspective on it, Tyranids once got caught on a planet which some Nurgle Daemons were trying to invade. The Tyranids and Nurgle Daemons both made the planet too toxic for each other to live, so both abandoned the war. But now, those same Tyranids have fought Nurgle Daemons again, and were basically immune to all the plagues and diseases the Daemons sent. So not only did they adapt an immunity to Nurgle's plagues, but they also have such incredibly deadly toxins that even Nurgle's Daemons can't withstand them.
I've wanted to make an FEC army that would swap the minis to Bretonnian or Cities of Sigmar when moving, and FEC when in combat. Plays along with the shifting reality aspect.
Great in depth explanations. The subfactions possess interesting groundwork to expand upon with new goodies... like what would a traveling kraith merc band look like? Or Khelt nar occult weaponsmiths... so much possibilities
Thankfully with the frequent Warcry and Underworlds releases, the chances of getting some more interesting miniatures depicting things like this has increased quite a bit :)
IKR it's also fun to see more characters getting a bit of a personality within that faction, was such a one-man show before Krethusa showed up (or well one-woman show I guess...)
@@barthelloren So true. I thought they were a bit one note. bar the Agents of Azir thing going on with characters like Malineth. So hope they get a lot more of a spotlight. and who know's a full army? I'd persoanlly love to see a civil war between the DOK anyway :) Think it could make for some very interesting stories going forward. Especially within the Soulbound RPG
@@barthellorenon top of that it was making the faction as a whole look like idiots. Basically the whole narrative was his they were being constantly duped by Morathi. It was making them look like gullible idiots with knifes. This allows a more nuanced take with them.
I'm not sure if I agree 100% with that as Morathi did genuinely do a good job in manipulating them (taking a lot of inspiration from real world tyrants and cult leaders in fact). She made sure that she was the central point of everything so that she could easily ruin, transform or kill anyone who questioned her. Making sure that all of her high ranking members were either mind-controlled medusae or sycophantic zealots. Reinforcing beliefs by making sure the magic and rituals actually worked and rewarded those most loyal. Creating a strong us vs them scenario for female elves, that reinforced internal bonds and made sure to isolate them from people outside of the cult. Setting up a very judgemental toxic culture that forces members to commit 100% of their time and energy to training and worship in order to avoid falling behind and dying in the arena. And so on and so forth. I agree that this adds a lot more depth and nuance to the faction but I wouldn't entirely write of the khainites as idiots, Morathi did do a great job with them.
@@barthelloren making them an entire faction of essentially duped and manipulated lackeys barring Morathi does not paint the faction as a whole in a good light. At first it was fine I guess. But as time moved on painting your army lore framework as an entire people manipulated by a narcissist that as time goes on became more and more obviously a fraud isn’t a good look on general intelligence of the faction. And just hints in the background of rebellion wasn’t enough. Nor was it good when most out speakers would do stupid things like speak outwardly against Morathi and immediately get assented. Again painting the faction as shortsighted and overall not bright. It needed more voices beyond Morathi to give other perspectives beyond “blind fanatics enthralled to Morathi and obsessed with Murder.” Than there is some actual better nuanced than just blood crazed manipulated lackeys.
Hey thanks for the question, it was here for a while but it should be on www.youtube.com/@GrimdarkReview on the 24th of July. Sorry for the inconvenience; I'm doing some re-organizing and updating of all the videos.
These books were so good. I really wish personally as a nightlords player, that we got more time with the Nightlords apothecary. All in all fantastic books
Agreed, these types of books always start on a -1 for me in terms of enjoyment because you know it is hopeless. Some stories like A Thousand Sons still do such an amazing job at building up the story that you almost start to believe it will end differently than you know; However most stories fail to build up real suspense because of it. The Olynder book is another good example of this from Age of Sigmar.
Not necessarily but you should be somewhat familiar with the overal lore of the Horus Heresy to get the most out of it I think. That being said the Emperor's Children plot is quite self contained when compared to that of many other legions, making this a better standalone than most.
It's funny that Dark Angels and Space Wolves get "utterly unrelated to the Heresy but interesting worldbuilding" novels; the difference is BL straight up and still do lie about "Prospero Burns" when it should be called "Fenryka".
Really love this series and hope you make more in the future. Also hope you get more subs too. Do you have any interest in Warhammer The Old World? Would love to see vids like this on some of the armies that didn’t make it to AOS.
Thanks for the kind words :) Yes I do plan on making more of them for sure. Currently I plan to do these videos, the subfaction videos and maybe some character specific videos for all AoS factions. There are some non-Warhammer and other Warhammer setting based factions I would like to cover at some point as well but AoS gets the priority for now. For the Old World I would like to do something with it, but it's very hard to get a hold of the books required to do so. I can, albeit for a bumped up price, get my hands on most 8th edition codices I think. But for an example the new TK book has been sold out everywhere where I live :( Definitely want to cover the Druchii at some point as they were my first entry into the Warhammer universe. (Malus Darkblade series is the best, don't @me lol)
5:40 small correction hormagaunts, unlike termagaunts, dont actually have a stomach so while they will hunt, they cant eat they are hyperevolved for speed and durability, and that includes removing all unnecessary organs that could get damaged in combat or slow down the nid on its way to combat instead it carries multiple tiny eggs and it will expend its energy reserves in the attempt to die in a pile of enemy dead where the eggs will hatch, the babies will eat both their parent and the enemy fallen to cocoon into the next generation of hormagaunts including the energy reserves to get to the meal for the next generation this keeps them on a short timer, ensuring hyperagression and it allows for faster adaptation as local genetics can be integrated in a single days lasting generation to ensure the brood is adapted for the environment, while also ensuring they have appropriate numbers while on an enemy and thus food rich planet also why you wont find any hormagaunts on hive ships, only termagaunts while they look very similar to eachother, the similarity is only skin deep as their internals and purpose are completely different ... also no fucking just semi cloning along with some stray genetics from whatever died with the parent
I'm gonna be honest, not the biggest fan of Daughters of Khaine. Since they're mainly women. So I don't have a favourite model from their range. Not cause of sexism, I'm just very, very gay
Of course you can just make up your own color scheme, lore and iconography! If you're not that skilled in the painting department and don't want to freehand the logos you can even order special paper that allows you to print your own transfers (Don't worry I suck at freehanding too haha) When playing you can just take whatever rules you feel are appropriate to your army, or just pick the ones that you enjoy playing with the most.
Horus: Alright we got... Fulgrim? Perturabo? Mortation? Kurze? Magnus? Fucking Angron?? And... Really? Lorgar? Why is he even a Primarch? If a tadpole sneezes in his general direction he'll probably hit the ground for crying out loud, anyway, word on Alpharius and Omegon? They sided with us but are opposed to Chaos? Wat? I bet they regretted siding with us as soon as they saw our "star" line-up(specially Lorgar) and were too scared to turn back knowing how the Inquisitors handle things(seriously, the Inquisitors and Kurze are on the same level of "assholery", Emperor on a bike!)
I think the rifles would kinda break the faction on TBT but yeah baby gimme those Vampires with mauls and zweihanders! Also I don't know if you're familiar with Innistrad from MTG? But they have Werewolves there that use ballista sentries as hand held weapons which would be super badass as a model.
What do they do leman Russ dirty, he’s the best Primarch in my opinion, and there are reasons. Comment if you have any questions for a reason why he’s the best Primarch.
Ah yes the Chonky bois :) I tend to not include ally options or things that multiple factions can take such as Kragnos, Nagash, Gargants etc. Gargants because they should get their own video at some point and the big heroes because detailing the story of Nagash would take as long as this entire video probably.
