I am a single woman planning on moving to CM in 2 years time, i have been many times and have some great friends there who will help me with my transition, for me it would be cheaper to live CM than in London, I will miss my daughter but in time I hope she will come out here and live with me, I will live city for first 3 months than rent house, possibly Hang Dong, I love Mae Rim too
Love your channel . Have been considering the move for years . 30 years in child welfare and did many investigations with the police. How do you come with the fire season and pollution.
My hats off to you. I've done many investigations with Child Protective Services, I really respect what you do. We stayed this burning season and it was tough. Next year we will head south to Hua Hin for a couple of months.
Hey Fred! Just wanted to say that I saw the Business Insider article on you and your wife today! Great story!! Filled in so many bits of your story and the adventure you guys are having now. So happy to see that your story is getting out. It will help a lot of people.
Fred, you’re paying way too much I rent a newer three bedroom three bath two-story house in a move on with a guarded gate and I’m paying 16,000 a month. My electric bill was 500 that it includes free true TV and the real fast Internet included water is included. Maintenance is included, and all I pay for is the electric Massages. I go to a government massage place if you get there at 8:30 in the morning they charge you 140 per hour really good massages. I see a lot of things that you listed on your list you’re overpaying anyways I guess for newcomers that’s expected and what you pay your Visa Guy, which is called your 90 day report my 90 day report an average takes me less than 5 to 10 minutes total It’s just one little sheet of paper you’re in and out there in less than five or 10 minutes I’m on a retirement visa and I’ve been here for many years. A lot of your stuff you’re overpaying. I know it seems cheap because you’re coming from America but a lot of your stuff that I saw wow, you’re really overpaying too much anyways enjoy Thailand. I’m not sure where you live. I live about 15 minutes away from Central Flestival shopping center
Thank you, I appreciate it. I live out in Doi Saket near the Dam. It was really difficult finding a home that would accept a dog my size. I will check out other places later. Thank you.
Good morning Fred. I just saw an article about you in Business Insider. Cheers for moving to TL. I will do the same in 3 years or less. them dogs, they howl like wolves lol <3 My friend told me once many moons ago: it is not a vacation if it is less than 30 days. And i finalized what that means 3 years ago. Brian
Thanks Brian, and congratulations on your impending move. Those three years will be here before you know it. And yes, some days it feels like the call of the wild with the dogs here, lol.
Fred, glad to see you made the move to Thailand. Thailand seems to have this effect on people. I visited last year for a month and can't wait to go back. My wife and myself are slow traveling through SE Asia for 6 months next year. Plan on being a part time expat from there on out 6 months out of the year. Keep up the good content. The politics back home are getting crazier then ever. Your Florida neighbor in Volusia county, Joe.
Thanks for dropping in. I think the slow travel route is a great way to do it. My neighbors are 6 months here and 6 back in Maine. Fun fact, I also lived in DeLand for a few years as well. Yes life over here in Thailand has been a blessing.
The thing with living outside of town when you are older is that you need make some preparations for medical emergencies. There are really no 911 services in Thailand. Check with the closest hospital on how to arrange for an emergency pickup, get visiting nurse service, and may be get into arrangements with a couple of local drivers or just dependable people. Thailand is a pay first medical system so have your insurance card on you, or a credit card, or have your spouse have easy access to cash.
Hello, saw your youtube interview about living in Thailand. I subscribed to your channel and others to get informative advice. I too am in the phase of planning my future retirement there. I am still grinding it out in the Pennsylvania USA. Curious, how do most expats setup their finances from U.S. to Thailand. Did you have to open a Thai bank before transfer funds over. I have heard some horror stories where expats were cut off and had to go back to U.S. to prove their identities. Would like some advice.
I set up an account in the USA that I researched and is great for travelers. Charles Schwab is the bank I use, never had a problem. I use WISE to transfer money from my American account to my Thai bank account, seamlessly. I wish you the best of luck as you work toward your retirement. Please feel free to send me an email as well if you have any other questions.
Hey Fred! Great video! I am a retired officer as well. I would love to move inba more relaxed and affordable environment. The thing that keeps me here is my elderly mother and my children. My daughter is an aspiring tennis pro. How is yhe tennis scene?
There is a Tennis presence here at some of the resorts here in Chiang Mai. But just like the rest of the world, Pickleball has become dominant here. It was tough leaving my mom. Fortunately I have siblings back home as well as her family to help out. Congratulations on your retirement from the job, there is no greater feeling than getting the stress off your back
Fred, I really enjoy your videos! Similar mindset, 32 years protection work, over saw many details of active duty LAPD as well as LASO officers. Great job, keep up the great work! Still working most likely another 3 years. Would love to meet you one day. Take care!👍
Thanks David! Those three years will be here before you know it. I'm so glad that you can see the finish line. Please stay in touch! I would love to meet up one day for coffee or to ' break bread' . Stay safe out there!
Thank you Fred for sharing your unique take on many things in Thailand. you are one of the few youtuber videos i watch to the end and can't wait til see the next one. I am from New York. retiring in couple years. I already sold on the idea of living as you said "Beautiful Chiang Mai. I sick and tire of the noise in New York City. a life in Chiang Mai sounds wonderful. see you in Thailand in couple years. keep up the good work.
I was just there yesterday riding around. Some of the most flooded areas have completely subsided. I think the rainy season is coming to an end. The city center was buzzing with activity.
Thanks for the tips and recommendations Fred. How are you and your wife doing after the bad flooding in Chang Mai? I hope you and everyone else are doing ok and better. Take care and stay safe.
Thank you. Fortunately out here in Doi Saket we were not hit as hard. We had a muddy driveway that we had to navigate and some flooding on the 118 that we take into the city. But we were very very fortunate unlike many. Thanks for checking in.
I remember having a great Indian meal with the wife and kids at the Taj Mahal restaurant that you mentioned in the video. If its only 870 baht to stay in your featured hotel, well heck, next time we go there I think we will stay in town for the night rather than returning home to San Phi Seua district, just north of the old city.
It is definitely worth it! And I will try the Indian Restaurant next time. Thanks Robert! I have a Michelin Star Restaurant video coming out in a couple of weeks as well😎
Well done, great video. Thank you for these economical suggestion! It’s always good to know about the hidden gems that are vetted. All of your suggestions have been noted for our upcoming travel.
You were walking in my neck of the woods. I’ve been traveling to Chiang Mai since 2005 and mostly stayed at the Duangtawan Hotel which became Centara and reverted back to Duangtawan. I now stay at the Marriott. I stay about 4 nights in Chiang Mai and the rest of my time is spent in bamboo huts in Ethnic Minority villages in the mountains for Northern Thailand. Talk about contrast in sleeping accommodations. 🤣 Can’t wait to return.
@@jnsa9454 I work on projects involving Hill Tribe children with parents, orphans and refugees. For the children with parents, I would help build housing in larger mountain cities that had public schools. Children would live in the housing during the school year so they could receive an education. Orphan projects were primarily construction related. We build a security wall around one in OmKoi to protect the children from human traffickers. The refugee orphans were the toughest. Fifty orphans who watched their parents raped, murdered or enslaved by the Burmese (Myanmar) Army. Most of those we served were from the Karen (pronounced “Car-wren”) State in Myanmar.
Is this place still in operation? I just pulled Forest Bake up on Google to add it onto a my Chiang Mai list. Says temporarily closed.I’m wondering if that’s accurate? I’m 5 months late on watching this video. Thank you again Fred.
Thanks for sharing your itemized budget. That's a big help for me. Glad you guys are living your best life there. Now all I have to do is convince my gf to give Thailand a try. 🙂
Seems like many expat retiree’s are retired from government jobs where they can draw a pension at a younger age. I regret not getting a govt job right after getting out of the military at age 24.
Great video! Do they have full time Dr’s and ACLS trained nurses on staff 24/7 for emergencies, as well as basic wellness care, with appropriate ALS equipment? How far is this place from a top notch hospital if advanced care is needed, and is there an ALS ambulance available to transport residents to the hospital? I’m a retired Paramedic and my wife is a trauma/ICU nurse. We tell people that you have to consider these things, in addition to the facility itself, no matter if it’s in the U.S. or another country. You can live in a beautiful place anywhere, but if well equipped, quick response pre-hospital services are not available, you’re screwed if/when a medical event happens and you need urgent care. We’ve considered the Philippines because she was born there, but the best medical care is only in the large, crowded cities like Manila and Cebu. Many of the hospitals in mid to small size areas don’t have doctors on staff 24/7, and especially not specialists. And pre-hospital transport is a bare bones ambulance for hire, taxi, jeepney, or however else you can get to the hospital.
Great questions, I know they do have a full-time ACLS nurse on staff 24 hrs. I'm not sure about a doctor. The nearest hospital is about 10 minutes away. However your top notch hospitals like Bangkok Hospital and Chiang Mai Ram is going to be in the city about a 30 minute drive. Brad who I interviewed will be able to give you more info on it, he is a nurse as well. You are correct, these are all considerations that have to be taken into account.
Thank you for the tour and a specific breakout on your expense in Chiang Mai. This really gives a clear picture for those of us interested in these specifics. We are so excited to come to Thailand for a visit.
Hi Fred! My husband and I retired early (he was law enforcement too). We sold everything and are traveling the world one month at a time. We just started in July and we also started a RU-vid channel. We will be in Chiang Mai in January and would love to connect if possible. I love your videos and perspective. 😊
@@farawayfred802 Retired Nomad Adventures 😊 I really will reach out when we get to Chiang Mai, if that’s okay. In the meantime, we’ll keep watching your videos!
One day I will visit you in Thailand 🇹🇭. I’m currently a Trauma / Addiction/ PTSD Nurse in Ocala , Florida. Like you I was a Deputy Sheriff in Houston, TX and departed after 13 yrs. Due to having SI after seeing multiple Suicides and Deaths of fellow deputies. Your content on this video hit home for me . Thanks for the awareness. Your soul is on its path.
Thank you so much. I'm sorry that you've experienced those losses, I can relate to your pain. I think it's so honorable that you continue to serve your community in a different capacity.I hope you are able to make over one day. Maybe we can grab a coffee and have a chat.
Thanks for the video on that type of place. You kind of went a little quickly on all the different price choices and services so it was a little hard to figure out. But, ballpark for sure better than here by a long way.
Nice episode. Your last comment reminded me of something that happened to me in Thailand recently. While having a beer at a cafe, a guy crosses the street coming towards, stops, and asks me if I knew the song Staying Alive by Robin Gibb. I said yes. He smiled at me and started singing it and walked away. It dawned on me then and there that staying alive is perhaps the most important desire anyone can have. No need for bucket lists.
