Fred, you handled getting your Thai drivers license like a pro. It went really smooth for you. Congratulations!🎉. Thank you for the video describing the process.
Fred, thank you for the information. I never had a motorcycle license,so, I will take the required classes prior for it then do as you suggested. Thanks again,Brian from CA ( by way of MA) leaving for Thailand tonight 🎉
@@farawayfred802 Hi Fred, hope this email finds you well. Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Brian and i arrived in Chiang Mai today with the intention to live in Thailand ( wow this heat is shocking though) at least a few years. I’m a retired Nurse from northern CA. Originally from MA,military took me to CA. I was hoping you. Hold help me ? I’ve watched plenty of the “Perfect Home real estate company’s videos. Yet,after seeing your home video - I wondered if you had a referral of a good real estate agent ? I’m a single guy,so,perhaps a single family home is too big ?? That will be figured out in my search. thank you in advance for taking the time to read my email. Regards, Brian
International Driving Permits are meant for tourists. Expat residents are expected to get a Thai Drivers License; our agent told us that there is a limit on the amount of time an American can legally drive in Thailand using a IDP. We were told that *most* of the time we could *probably* get away with the IDP. It would be at the discretion of a police officer at a checkpoint whether or not to accept an IDP as the officer would not know whether we are tourists or residents. If the officer thinks a foreigner is living in Thailand I guess they can ask for your passport to check the stamp, and based on that issue a fine if the officer thinks you have been in Thailand long enough to qualify for a Thailand DL? 🤷♂Our agent (Thai Assist Visa) told us that if we were ever in an accident or received a traffic violation, however, the legal system would absolutely know we were not tourists and we would face additional fines for driving without a Thai drivers license. We did not have to watch the video, we had all the photocopies (our USA drivers licenses and our Taiwan drivers licenses, copies of our IDPs, copies of our passports with the visa stamps, copies of our visa approval forms, etc.), the medical forms, and our residence certificates. We went in the morning on a weekday and were told to come back in two hours. When we got back we were ushered into the room where they took our photos and then we had to wait about five minutes for them to be printed out. We had all our forms prefilled out and all our photocopies already made, so I think the total time we spent in the building was about an hour.
Thanks Mike, This is great information for those both visiting and transitioning long-term. I didn't think about what would happen if there was an accident, that could open a whole different can of worms. Thanks again.
Well done. I guess Aussies have it easier, I just gave the paperwork, paid and lined up for photo and was out in 2 hrs. No video, no tests. Cheers mate :)
Yeah I think the prices are very reasonable. There is a lot of competition which helps keep the prices down. Renting long term during the low season helps as well.
It is on the same road as Assist Thai Visa, here you go.
