I went to a four year liberal arts college with a middling reputation and got a degree in something that did not automatically lead to a job. I learned to be a good writer there, and learned also history and foreign languages. I started off at a low level position but having a better than average knowledge of foreign languages and world politics got me to a level in my career where I was eventually hosting delegations from China and Korea. All from my useless liberal arts degree. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Get rid of the HR idiots. As an old guy that worked my way up before anybody asked for even a resume and went into management, I can assure you this, HR weeds out all the actual skilled applicants before they got to me and I could talk shop with them to see if they really knew anything. How the hell does an HR dimwit know what a skilled electrician or machinist looks and sounds like???

I entered a “corporate” job at the age of 17 (HS graduate). I started in the accounting back-office and through the course of 15 years, transferred to several operations departments, became a client liaison, and eventually became a Marketing Manager. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity as the company was new to my area, but was focused on growth through acquisitions and organic marketing. Each move I made built on top of the previous position and I gained experience and expertise. I was fortunate that I had some excellent mentors who were willing to help teach me the ropes. I finally left the job in 2005 after 16 years and managed to make a 6-figure salary (excluding bonuses) by the time I “retired.”

When I apply for jobs, I often see positions that only require a high school diploma. With a Bachelor's degree, I feel overqualified. It makes me regret spending all that money and time on my Bachelor's degree, as it feels like a waste.
@CatsInHats-S.CrouchingTiger
@CatsInHats-S.CrouchingTiger День назад
No amount of training or education is ever a waste. All of it contributes to your level of expertise, after all, education is supposed to help increase thinking and that’s what companies look for when facing challenges and solutions. When they say you’re overqualified, it only means they feel they are unable to pay you what you deserve because the Human Resources Dept. has capped the position at a certain salary. These challenges only increase your thinking skills and motivate you to acquire more education for the jobs you really want.

Employers are entitled to ask for a Degree requirement. If they miss out on good employees, that's on them. Complete a degree is a filter for contentious personality.

Our HR department used to put degree requirements in job postings by default. Our IT department ignored this. Community college or work experience was fine. We also hired people to do tech support with non-technical degrees, looking instead for a good fit for the job. Sometimes it was technical skills, learned on the job or as a hobby, and other times it was people skills, sometimes just enthusiasm. I got my first IT job with a post-graduate degree in Arts - tinkering with computers was just an obsessive hobby - and always tell people that if they want the job to go ahead and apply anyway. What have you got to lose?

apply for the job anyway. I have an associates degree and in my field a bachelors degrees does NOTHING to secure a better job or higher pay. In fact there is NO BS degree for being an MRI technologist. So when the job ads were saying BS required, I ignored it. IGNORE THE DUMB ADS!!! APPLY ANYWAY!!! Most HR departments have NO idea what your job is, and what it entails. So if you went to a 'trade' school, you can get that same job with an associates. I have had coworkers that worked their asses off to get that 'degree' and guess what?? They did not get a raise. They didn't get a better paying job. It made absolutely NO difference. Don't fall for the BS that the Education Machine has been pushing.

another scam to make a few wealthy from poor shmucks that are easily manipulated through emotion. only way to fix this is start taking back so much of power we have given government but as they say its easier to give away your rights than to give them back. Gov will not allow you to take power back once you've given it up. at least not without a fight .

Man, humans have just continued to mess up since the Industrial Revolution. Now people don’t have survival skills, no one grows their own food or can raise animals or can build their own homes, now even jobs and trades are being withheld and having the opportunity to work to provide for yourself is some sort of sought after illusion for most of the population. Just wait until older generations pass away and their knowledge and skills with them.

All a modern degree says about you is that youre willing to jump through hoops and be taken advantage of. Thats why employers want it. I work with people within my own role in my department who have masters degrees and i can promise that having a degree doesnt mean youre at all smarter than someone who doesnt have a degree.

If a College creates a degree for an area of study then it becomes required. That's how baby sitters making $13 an hour started needing early childhood dev degrees. The State will also get in on the action and regulate the job to need a license with a recurring fee. Big reason for the Bachelors degree is because it weeds out the applicants since there really are not enough jobs in this country for all of us to begin with. It's like going to Disneyland. They raise the prices because they only have so much room in the park. We can't all go.

I am Korean. I live in Korea. The US also requires more than a degree, just like Korea. I understand the position of companies, but it is true that this kind of approach is ruining the national economy. In fact, Korea is not only a place for universities, but also a place for academic background, so we are tired of it and the birth rate is 0.6. This is also the reason why I am immigrating to the US.

It's the same in Europe. What's infuriating is when they want a specific degree but it literally doesn't matter what the content of that degree is. Employers should realize it's more beneficial to hire someone with relevant experience.
