America has the highest incarceration rate in the world - but it’s not improving public safety. While people should be held accountable for their actions - these two men believe the role of the prison system has to change, and their vision for a safer future could change millions of lives:

--------
The Frederick Douglass Project is an innovative program aimed at rehabilitating incarcerated individuals through direct, face-to-face conversations with outside visitors - as well as inspiring understanding and empathy in those visitors when they meet the people inside.Spearheaded by Dr. Mark Howard and J.J. Velasquez, this initiative challenges the conventional approach to the United States' prison system, which currently houses two million people but often fails in addressing underlying issues that can lead to crime like addiction and trauma.
The project is rooted in the belief that individuals who have committed crimes should be accountable for their actions - but also that they are capable of change and should be equipped for successful reintegration into society. Equally central to the project is the humanization of incarcerated individuals by focusing on shared humanity rather than past mistakes. By facilitating these interactions, the Frederick Douglass Project seeks to dismantle the narrative of fear and demonization often associated with incarcerated people.
As the project grows, encompassing multiple prisons and engaging thousands of participants, its goal extends beyond individual transformation. It envisions a society that welcomes returning individuals with acceptance and support, fundamentally shifting how reentry and rehabilitation are approached. This shift is not only humane but also strategic, with the potential to lower recidivism rates and enhance public safety.

Beautiful. The first step to change like this is humanizing the people we often dehumanize. What an amazing project.

Wow this is amazing. Can't believe it's taken 21 years from when I was in criminology class talking about prisons and incarceration to finally see a meaningful and plausible fix/betterment of the garbage system that's been in place for all these years. Amazing work professor and those involved.

I spent many weekends with my mom in the Shakopee women's prison as a kid. As a young child visiting my mom in prison I was stripped searched. And when I didn't have a ride to visit my mom for long periods of time a prison guard would drop me and my sister off a block away and we would walk to the prison. Later that guard would be working in her unit but we had to pretend we didn't know them. It was a strange childhood.

This makes a tonne of sense. Currently jails just make more hardened criminals. Finally something is changing. We’re all human.

I think this is a great idea but we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that prison is about systems target than just wrong choices. We shouldn't expect that a few visits from people are going to help these prisoners make the right choices in the future without support for jobs, housing, relationships, mental health all of which cost a lot more and demand more social change than visits.

Thank you so much for your feedback. It's not a one-and-done process, but this initiative is just one of many ways to bridge understanding about the criminal justice system in our country.

I think the prison system must be rethought now that we know so much about neurodiversity and mental health issues. With all its good and bad: the people who are undiagnosed and did what they did because of their mental health, or personality disorders need specialists, not a hellhole. But there are also people, high level psychopaths, who can't be changed, they trick any system. Finally, we can't make prisons into a knowledge share program of the dark side. For example how come that ISIS came out of US military managed Iraqi prisons?

No mention of the prison industrial complex??? There is no monetary value in rehabilitation. At least not to the powers that be.

One almost impassable problem in the US is the way Americans think about human choices. They believe humans make decisions free of external circumstances and every person has complete free will. So ultimately, they believe all people in jail deserve to be there and if they don’t, will choose to make better decisions when they get out. This is absolute nonsense but it doesn’t seem to be addressed even by those who are against mass incarceration. First, we should address how the population thinks about human choice. Then it will be easier to fix these problems. In some ways, what you are doing here helps.

I don't see the utility in having a bunch of adults sitting around "serving time" instead of serving society. Don't put people in jail put them to work in either community service or a work release program. It's stupid to put so many people in jail when it would better serve both the public and the the offender to not be doing nothing.

You commit a crime, go to prison, eat shit sleep repeat, you're surrounded by criminals, you have minimal access to education or real world work and eventually get released. You now have no money, no real work, no home, no family or friends. What do you think most likely happens? Prison is good for a short wake up call but long term definitely counter productive for the inmate and society. In Queensland Australian prisons, there used to be rehabilitation programs, education, work release, home detention & weekend release. They stopped it and guess what happened?
