The detail captured of those mushroom heads using the torch is quite staggering! Just wondering....... ... can this same effect be achieved using a flashgun/trigger combination, where the flashgun has an attached diffuser? (I just Subscribed, this video is superb - thanks Oliver).
Super tutorial! I just didn't quite understand one thing: At the beginning, you use focus stacking to achieve a perfectly sharp scene from front to back. But then, when taking "illuminated" shots, you shoot at the same aperture but only with a single focus. When stacking the layers in Photoshop, these "illuminated" layers are blended together in "normal" mode, which means that besides the desired "illumination" in the masked area, they can also be blurred because the flashlight was focused only at one distance. So, I think for even sharper results, series of "illuminated" shots should be taken during focus stacking, always before refocusing on the next distance.
Just bought mine earlier today for $116 USD on Amazon... and then I saw your video. But at least it confirmed I made the right decision. While I did a bit of research on my own, the thing that initially sold me on this tripod is that Simon d'Entremont uses this model as his travel tripod. If it's good enough for him it most certainly is good enough for me. Nice video and review, and I enjoyed the outtakes. I like someone that doesn't take himself too seriously.
Wow Oliver, that’s awesome! I am in the process of getting started with Macro photography… I just setup a little studio/macro lab and this is going to be something I’ll attempt first…
Good review. I like that it’s 3 twist locks per leg instead of 4. I have a Benro with 4 twist locks per leg and it’s a nightmare. You might think That it’s just one extra twist, but it makes the last section very thin and three I can undo with one hand but the 4th one needs extra work. I’ve ordered one of these.
Thank you so much for your videos!!! You gave me back my mojo :D After six months with my camera sitting on my desk, i picked it up once again and I'm having a blast :D I hope one day you will continue to do this videos. Greetings from Schwäbische Alb
A great tutorial, I couldn't wait to try it. I don't have a macro lens and the only mushroom I found was a bit to old for light to shine through so I had to illuminate it from below. My light was too white and I had a lousy composition so had to 'move' my mushroom to a dead branch in PS. I photographed the same mushroom from 2 sides to duplicate it. It was a lot of post processing work which, with better planning, I could have done in camera, but I'm reasonably pleased with my first attempt.
You give good instruction using inexpensive equipment that most photographers already have. This is a good project for these dreary, winter months. Your beautiful images illustrate your good technique and creativity. I'm looking forward to trying this out. Another source of background images would be photographs or graphic art on an iPad.
You created a photostack to create more Depth of Field while containing the blurry background. Very clear. But when you shoot the mushrooms with light you do not take the shallow depth of field into account. Wouldn't it better to shoot with a more closed apperture while lighting the mushrooms to make sure the "glowing parts" are in focus as well? Otherwise you should refocus per mushroom. Not taking into account the shallow depth of field with the glowing mushrooms would ruin the photostack because you paint partly unfocussed glowing mushrooms over your sharp stack... or am I missing something?
HI, I'm glad I finally watched this, it's been popping up in my suggested videos and finally watched it tonight. I looked at your list of gear, but maybe I missed it, what was your focal length for shooting? I have a 105mm macro lens, but have to be a foot away. I definitely want to give this a try... thanks for the easy set up demo!
Very good instructions. Can you tell me some of the tools you used to hold your flashlights, lights used and holder for flower? You can never have too many toys. 😁
A very well filmed glowing mushroom tutorial. I like the system of progression from exposure preparation, composition and the subsequent post-production editing process. Great and thank you very much.
Thank you for the fun video. I begin teaching at UNLV tomorrow in the Olli program and this semester one of the fun lessons will be the joys of macro photography. My students will be able to understand and jump right in to create fun, beautiful pictures. I NEVER thought about a rubber ducky...now I have to see how a Three Stooges keychain might look. Thanks for the inspiration.
Excellent work! I think I'm going to give this a try myself. One thing am curious about. You show the focal stacking at the beginning. Do you focal stack each "lit" example as well? Or do you refocus on the just the lighted mushroom and keep moving that around?
Thank you for this video. I could feel your pain and frustration. Photography is so much fun even when you think your images aren’t as good as you think they should be.
