Ki Ora,

Welcome to Hounds 4 Life!

We created our podcast series to share our passion for retired greyhounds as companions, raise awareness about greyhounds, and for an excuse for us to sit down and chat about all things hound related!

We think it’s super important (and interesting) to show all aspects of living with greyhounds. Each podcast we chat about “unique” greyhound traits, introduce greyhound fosters, interview hound related organisations, how-to's and so much more.

This way you're just going to have a fat dog that is food oriented, so no food - no reaction. That's not a good method.

The silliest and goofiest of dogs for sure - they will make you laugh every day. Unfortunately my grey was attacked by an off leash dog and now she hates other dogs and gets aggressive. I just try to keep her away from other animals to avoid conflict. It's a challenge at times.

I watched this video a while back when I thought my grey (I've had him for four months at this point) would never sit. I now have a beautiful enthusiastic sit, a lovely recall + sit, and am working on 'close' heelwork position with sit. Not for any reason other than working with him. Thank you for your tips - they made all the difference.

I have a rescue mutt. Don’t know what breeds are in him, but he is SO smart. He learns everything so fast but the ONE thing he doesn’t grasp as quickly, is recall and being able to focus on me outdoors. He’s totally got the face and build of a sighthound so I’ve been trying to train him like one and it’s worked so well!

I just found you today, and I'm enjoying your video, I've liked and subscribed. I live in my airstream travel trailer, 7 feet by 21 feet with my Greyhound, Golden retriever, giant breed Anatolian Pyrenees, along with two tiny toy breeds,all girls and one male cat. My dogs ages are 6 months to 15 years old and we all live in peace. The girls floor space is 6 feet by any where from 41/2 to 6 feet. I bought a twin bed that's has pillows around it. So my whole living floor space is one huge bed that most of the girls share. My little 4 pound Maltese is up on my bed which is also my couch. My cat adores his girls and loves to clean their faces. I rescued my Greyhound off the street at about 6-7 months old, she's now about 31/2 years old and my other two large dogs are 6 months and 16 months so we're still doing a lot daily training and it's going very well. I have a smaller fenced in yard where the 3 big girls play together. I have to keep Willow my Greyhound on a tie out because she's an escape artist. I plan moving into a larger space this summer which is going to be such a luxury I won't know what to do with all that space and I'm sure the animals will enjoy it also. But even that will be 8 feet by 40 feet , so still small compared to other homes. So I can definitely say these dogs can handle small space living. I'm retired so I'm with my girls all the time and I love it

The best thing that happened to our new hound in 2020 when we got him home was that we went into lockdown He had plenty of time with his world kept small and is a very well adjusted loved pet who is a very lucky animal to be able to run freely on our semi rural property and is improving his recall with bribery (cheese)

Well done but you need to manicure them with a file or a electric grinder. But seeing your dogs are just pets it doesn't really matter.

I watched your video a few months ago and decided to try teach my retired grey recall using a whistle (my signal is two bursts) and treats. Our enclosed park is full of holes and has become a hazard for her so she hasn't ran in a long time. I have felt bad for removing an activity she clearly loves from her. She picked it up surprisingly quickly, I found her appetite is her greatest enemy... I would do 5 recalls a day on her walks on a slightly longer 5m lead (decided against a long lead) just let her wonder off to full length then call her back at random times. I then tried off lead in the house off lead, and in our garden. After a few months I reached a point I was satisfied she was responsive enough to risk outdoors. After much deliberation this morning was the first time to try without the lead. We walked to the local beach, 6am, Sat morning, no traffic. I wrote our mobile number on her collar in case. The second I let her off she ran off in a full sprint about 100m away from me, my heart sank and I thought I'd lost her. I blew the whistle and she stopped and looked at me, I blew it again and he came sprinting back straight to me. I gave her a huge praise and a treat. She did that 3 times, on the 4th she got tired so didn't go too far. It was an amazing moment to see her running at full sprint straight back towards me!

I think we used a 'Halti' harness but there are plenty of good brands out there, depending from where you are and whats available locally. Just make sure you get one with a front attachment where you can clip the leash into.

I've been trying to teach my greyhound recall inside the house but when I call her she won't get off the couch. 🙄
@hounds4life852
@hounds4life852 2 года назад
That is common in Greyhounds, they sometimes don't get off the couch no matter what you do, unless you buckle a leash on the collar and ' walk them off' the couch:) Your recall training might be more successful outdoors!

You forgot: they are super clean, they don't destroy things, they don't bark. But I disagree with the off leash thing. My greyhound is always off-leash and goes to the beach everyday. When some one make a stupid comment about greyhound needing to be on leash I bite their heads off.

I’d love some help on getting my Grey to respect doorways. Especially front doors but even interior doors she treats as a starting gate
@hounds4life852
@hounds4life852 2 года назад
how about to train him to stand under doorways until you command him away? Use treats or other rewards in the same way as for recall training to make him want to stand still under the doorway until you say 'go' or something else.
@joellekenyon6258
@joellekenyon6258 Год назад
I found this is actually one of the easiest things to teach a dog, as it doesn't require treats and can be practiced every time you go outside! This is one of the first things I taught my greyhound when I got her, and she picked it up in just a couple days. Before you go outside with your greyhound, open the door. Before the dog can get out, close the door. Open it a little, and if the dog tries to go out, close it again. Keep opening and closing the door until your dog does not try to get out. Use a release word (I use "ok") and allow your dog to leave. Instead of getting a treat for waiting, the reward is the exciting outdoors! Just practice this every time you go outside until your dog does not leave without their release word. Dogs love being outside so much, the reward of getting to leave for doing a good job waiting is often a much stronger motivator than any treat! I live in an apartment with my grey with only a single door, so I can't speak from experience here, but I would recommend training this wait and release on each individual door you want your greyhound to respect. I have a feeling if you teach only one door, they will think the other doors are okay to sprint out of. Also make sure that everyone in the family makes the dog wait and release or they will think it is okay to race out when other people open the door! I have roommates who didn't do this and it was hard to keep my dog in the habit of waiting. Just be consistent and your dog should pick it up in no time! I found this is also something that really helps with a "stay/wait" command. I started telling my dog to "wait" before opening a door, and then using the release word. She learned very quickly that "wait" meant stay still until she hears "ok", all without any treats! You can give them lots of praise after using the release word too, and they come to think of it almost as a game
