I'm adopting a Greyhound tomorrow. My adoption day has finally come. I've been vetted and have moved up the list at the adoption center. I'm so excited to meet my new friend for life. My boy is coming off the track in South Florida. I love your channel.

This video over-simplifies the process. Retired greyhounds tend to fall into one of three categories where cats are concerned: cat safe, (meaning they can likely live in a household with a cat having been safely introduced to them, cat-trainable (meaning they will have to be gradually introduced to them over a period of time - often weeks or months), not cat-trainable (regardless as to however much conditioning you do with the greyhound, they are not likely to ever tolerate a cat). My greyhound is the last category. He would never be able to live with a cat. Even those that are classified as cat-safe or cat-trainable will often given chase to their own family cat if it is running in the garden. Certainly those that are trainable often continue to consider all other cats outside of the household as prey. You should expand on your video to include this information otherwise it doesn't give a balanced view to people. Also, please desist from punishing greyhounds with spraying water on them. This is not rewarding for positive behaviour.

Thank you for commenting! This video is made only for Greyhounds that are cat trainable. We are not rehoming a non cat-trainable dog to a household with a cat and would not recommend this to anyone.

how do you know if a greyhound isn't cat trainable? all dogs i have known bark at the neighbours cat, but even these dogs can learn to tolerate a cat when living with one over time.

@@aurora6920 It all depends on the strength of their prey drive. My boy's is off the scale and has little or no control over it - so any amount of impulse control training isn't going to help him. I've managed to get him to improve where squirrels and birds are concerned - he'd still have a "pop" if got too close them without a muzzle on - but when we see them now, I say "birdie" or "squizzer" and he's come to realise that he's not likely to be able to catch them - so gets excited but doesn't lunge uncontrollably, which he does with cats. Nothing is going to change that - but it's fine - I knew that when I adopted him.

@susiemorris2334 wow. That sounds intense. It's great that you are so understanding and accept that reality. My greyhound is the opposite end of the scale - I don't think anyone informed him that as a greyhound he's supposed to have that thing called prey drive 🤦‍♀️ I have 3 cats and he could not care less! I agree with you about the water spray bottle. That's what is recommended for cats but if you have ever seen it done then you know it's so mean. It scares them - and that does not facilitate a good trusting and loving relationship between person and pet.

Please don't use punishment such as water bottles, it may not seem like a harsh punishment but if the dog doesn't like it, it's punishment to them. Chasing cats might be unwanted but its natural to the dog and he may assume the cats presence itself brings the nasty water spray, more reason to chase them away. Also watching a cat eat is frustrating so don't do that either, if I'm hungry watching someone else eat it won't make me respect them even though I'm a human and also live in social groups..... pack mentality isn't about this. Pack members decide who eats first and this new family isn't a natural pack. Keep your dog and cat separate you can only achieve cat training once the dog has bonded to you and that could take 4 weeks....so for at least 4 weeks, keep your cat and new greyhound completely out of the way of each other and your greyhound on the lead in the garden to protect your neighbours cats. if you want to hear more about packs search "Alpha" Wolf? Dr. L. David Mech in RU-vid a human, a cat and a dog aren't a pack.

You're doing a lot of comparing yourself, a human, to dogs. In dog packs, the leaders eat first. This is commonly known....
@jadebrooks3250
@jadebrooks3250 2 года назад
@@websitesforhire it was commonly thought, but has been disproven. Pack leaders the alpha male & alpha female are the breeding pair and they rarely eat first. They make sure their adolescents and pups get fed first to ensure the success of the pack, if my dog is fed first I can enjoy my meal in peace. She doesn’t understand ‘pack theory’ because it’s made up by humans. Search on RU-vid there are lots of videos, there’s even one by the man who created the theory, explaining why he was wrong.
