In this episode, we discuss LGBTQ+ characters in noir, the best noir cinematographers, “Executive Action”, author John D. MacDonald, circumventing the Hays Code, and more. Plus, we settle a debate regarding the portrayal of women in noir for a viewer. We wind up with a discussion of our fantasy casting for noir brothers and noir sisters. Stay tuned to the end for a special furry guest star.

This week’s questions:
1. I’d enjoy hearing from both of you about LGBTQ+ characters in Noir.
-Marjorie (from the poor part of Connecticut)
2. Are there any Film Noir Foundation restorations in the Flicker Alley pipeline this year?
-Michael, Post Falls, Idaho
3. Have you ever considered The Orpheum Theater in Phoenix, Arizona for a NOIR CITY showing? Also, are there any great film noirs from the golden age that are not readily available?
-Vince from Arizona
4. In a recent ASK EDDIE, you said that "The 13th Letter” is unavailable for showings because of rights issues, Are there any other noirs that similarly cannot be shown because of rights issues?
-Bill Miller, Chicago
5. Who do you consider the best cinematographer of the classic film era?
-Harry, West Chester, PA
6. I recently engaged in a debate with someone about the concept of film. I wanted to get your perspective. The other person posits that the femme fatale trope was a sexist derivative of men's postwar angst of women taking their jobs and workplace. I argued that men and women in noir are oftentimes equally culpable, equally shrewd and equally guilty in their indiscretions. What are your thoughts on these arguments?
-Andrew, Clayton, North Carolina
7. TCM showed “Not As A Stranger” and I thoroughly enjoyed it. IMDB says that movie is a Film Noir. I can’t see it. What do you think?
-Stephen, Allen, Texas
8. I recently saw the Italian neorealist film “Bitter Rice”, which has many film noir characteristics. Can you recommend other neorealist films that might also be regarded as film noir?
-Ron
9. It's hard to think of a movie more detested, shunned and now ignored than "Executive Action," a 1973 political drama, directed by David Miller and written by Dalton Trumbo, that blames the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on a right-wing capitalist conspiracy. I'd welcome any comments you have about "Executive Action."
-Paul from "Fargo" land
10. I recently watched “Journey into Light” (1951) starring Sterling Hayden and found it surprisingly emotionally moving. Are there any film noir movies that you find especially moving? Also, do you consider this movie a "religious noir"?
-Dan
11. One great American crime writer you've never mentioned is John D. Macdonald, the creator of Travis McGee. Macdonald considered Victor Nunez's 1984 adaptation of his novel “A Flash of Green” to be the best film version of his work. What do the two of you think of Macdonald's work? And have either of you ever seen “A Flash of Green”?
-Doug, Silver Spring, MD
12. One of the many pleasures of viewing classic films noir is spotting the various ways in which the filmmakers circumvent the Hays Code and express graphic violence, et cetera, despite the limitations forced upon them, with clever filmmaking techniques. Can you think of any other good examples of this sort of Hays Code circumvention, in which a film is able to express graphic content without explicitly showing it?
-Sam from Iowa
13. Where is it that you tape introductions for NOIR ALLEY? Are you given a blooper reel each year? Have you ever finished it in one single take. Do you have a favorite hotel you stay at when in L.A. or do you not stay at same place each visit?
-Alan, San Anselmo, CA.
14. I came across an excellent book called “San Francisco Noir” which shows real locations from SF movies and proves interesting anecdotes about the locations and the films themselves. At the end of the book is a description of the Danger and Despair Knitting Circle, which sounds like an elite private showing of various noirs. Does this still exist, and do you have stories about this group?
-Phil from Boston
15. My question addresses some fantasy casting as well as historic casting. Who would both of you cast as Noir Brothers and Noir Sisters. What would be the best combustible pairs?
-William from Lafayette

2 examples of symbolism to get around the code are in The Set-up and Sweet Smell of Success when a a guy getting beat up in an alley is cut back-to-back with a drummer going to town on his drums. There is an almost coy allusion to this in The Big Combo when Cornell Wilde is being tortured with a hearing aid and a drum solo on the radio.

Thanks for the information about Rouge Cop not being allowed to be released. It is my favorite Robert Taylor film and I always try to watch it when it comes on

A typical tactic to circumvent the Hays Code was to put so many things in the film that they knew that the censors would object to in, the hope that at least of some of these scenes would make it through.

I often think of Richard Widmark and Dan Duryea as similar noir villains. I wish they could’ve teamed up. I kind of think Richard Conte is a better fit to brother of Glenn Ford.

Eddie, On the June 22, 2023, you mentioned the film noir Rogue Cop 1954. I asked a question on the September 2022 show concerning the absence of this movie. A rights issue is the problem. I bought Rogue Cop on dvd. A wonderful noir with a cast including Robert Taylor, George Raft, Janet Leigh, Steve Forrest, and Anne Francis. What a shame this film noir is never shown along with other noirs.

Another religious noir is "Red Light" with George Raft. And re. John D. Mcdonald screen adaptations, Rod Taylor played Travis McGee in "Darker than Amber" (1970).

"Journey into Light" is the type of religious/moral based movie that couldn't be made by a studio today. Sterling Hayden's character's flaw, (which is evident but he never really owns up to his own actions/neglect) isn't a greater love for God over his wife, but his greater ambition to succeed in his ministry career, indifferent to his wife who isn't suited for the responsibilities of being a minister's wife. (Earlier she tells Hayden she was liked the fewer pressures when they were in a smaller church, but he is deaf to her, knowing he is able, even deserving of an even bigger church with more pressure/responsibilities she can't handle....but he blames God and church members instead. Besides, any movie that includes Thomas Mitchell, Jane Darwell, and H.B. Warner is worth watching.

Eddie doesn't seem to understand with youtube people uploading movies aren't some horrible criminals. They're fans sharing these movies. If the rightsholders doesn't want it on youtube, they can autoblock it, or have a takedown request.

Made it to the feline-alley, finale. Always a pleasure! Thanks. I'm glad you guys like doing these things. Well, it seems like you're both enjoying yourselves. I definitively am. As a side note: I think Cliff Roberson would be a great little brother to Glen Ford.

Wilmer Cook in Maltese Falcon is called a gunsel. "You have to admire Dashiell Hammett for using a corrupted Yiddish word to pull the wool over his jittery editor’s eyes in 1929 when the Black Mask ran the serialized version of his The Maltese Falcon, which would be released as a novel in 1930. Hammett’s editor objected to his use of the word “catamite” in referring to Casper Gutman’s gunman Wilmer Cook. A catamite is “a boy kept by an older man for homosexual practices.” Oh, my, we can’t have people reading that. OK, Hammett said, you don’t like catamite. How about gunsel? Thinking it was another word for a torpedo or hit man, the editor agreed and, without knowing what the result would be, Hammett singlehandedly brought the word into Hollywood lexicon. Gunsel is taken from the Yiddish word gendzel, meaning little goose. Somehow, the corrupted form, gunsel, became the term for a young homosexual male in convict and tramp circles." --- duluthreader.com

Which animated cartoons of that era do you (Foundation folks or commenters down here) recommend as a noir hybrid? "Donald's Crime" and "Duck Pimples" are too easy a target!!

There were a couple of attempts at noir cartoons made by the misbegotten Screen Gems studio. FLORA tries to spoof LAURA and transfers the concept to a suburban cat-and-dog milieu, with the title character as a fetching feline. The obsession factor is there but the noir styling is not. In the 1944 Columbia Phantasy LIONEL LION (1944), its alcoholic star can't find his way home. That one is definitely noir in its stark B&W visual styling and the most despair-filled cartoon I've ever seen, including animation from Eastern Europe. I'm amazed that Columbia Pictures released it.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Cobweb's weirdness so much I was inspired to write my own novella involving a mental institution and curtains. COPWEB Esteemed psychiatrist Dr. Brent Havidol has, by all appearances, an enviable life as the head of a mental clinic specializing in a self-policing environment for privileged young adults. But appearances can be deceiving, as his disintegrating marriage and attraction to a new lady psychologist complicate matters. However, the complications arising from the introduction of live theater produced and performed by the patients are what put his reputation and career on the line. New patient Kip, who has a crush on the play's girl director, comes to her rescue by providing a stage curtain solution, but an opening night calamity leads to compounding misfortunes. Misplaced affections and bad assumptions flame a VD scare and muddy relationships across both staff and patients. Events snowball to test and rock the foundation of the clinic's therapeutic model. Set in 1955, COPWEB shines a light on professionals who get so wrapped up in their own lives they forget about the mental problems their unstable patients have. These old films inspire all my books! This one, I'll admit, is a bit too busy, but I had fun writing it.
