Motorcycling has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. My father, now in his 80’s, has been motorcycling since he was a teen as has my older brother, so I’ve been around bikes, tinkering with them all my life. As a rider I was late to the game, only ever being a pillion, I remember being strapped on the back of the bike as a toddler or sat on the tank pretending to ride, so it wasn’t until retiring from the armed forces when I was 40 that the midlife crisis bug hit me and I bought my own bike. Now over ten years later the bug is still fresh and I ride every day, rain, hail or shine. I don’t claim to be an expert or even think my little adventures are worthy of Charlie Borman but I enjoy sharing my experiences in the world of bikes where it seems you’re never too old to start and can learn from everyone, no matter their experience.
i did exactly the same than you on my 98's R850 Cruiser, completely rebuild and learn how to enjoy it. Now i dont lose any opportunities to ride it (with my r100/7 also)
Ive had one on my 99 750 SRAD, Also with a Healtech FI module & ATRE, & Leo pipe, n Hiflow airfilter Mounted on the steering head/ dash Easy to Dial in on the go.. Made a world of tunabilty,, +++ @ hi speed runs 9k rpms to 12.5 rpms Been 5 yrs Next i need to change the CR battery.... Bcoz it wont light up .... ( instructions are on the back ) CR1220 i believe >>>> Out!
Purchased these and have had less than good results. Dealership is happy to refund purchase . Really hoping that I can sort out the problem with the left hand glove Tried many different ways of sorting out the problem but as yet don’t have an answer
Really sorry you're having issue, used mine this last winter and still had no issues. Maybe try resetting them, delete the app from your phone and re-install so basically you'll start from scratch
Great video. I'm trying to get my 1980 back on the road as well. What battery did you use? I'm just wondering if an AGM 20AH would be ok? The original lead acid battery is huge and the frame always need splitting when you take it out.
Here's the link to the one I used, it just about fits but is quite tall and means the tool box doesn't fit but is a good battery, has pos/neg terminals which is handy for accessories. www.motorworks.co.uk/battery-ela59647-2.html
Thank you for the very detailed video, was gifted one of these from a friend and I’m about to install it. Fuel consumption aside, did you notice any long term negative effects? An increase in fuel consumption is definitely expected, no way around that. I’m wondering if it wasn’t so dramatic over time. I’m sure with the new toy you were a little heavier on the throttle than usual for the first few days 😂
To be honest this is something I use rarely use nowadays and when I do I whack it up to level 5 just for fun. You may have read into my voice over that the difference is small, not that it was all in my mind but still small. There's been no negative effects other than fuel but as I said, I rarely use it these day (its still connected). As it was gifted to you, put it on and have a go but if you were looking at buying one now I'd reserve my advice to only if you can really afford it. Thanks for watching though and Ride Safe
Just ordered one for my fjr 1300 it was literally one of the few i could find that is compatible with the first gen i was honestly so sketchy about buying this but after your video i feel a lot better about my decision especially now since i have free flowing exhaust it has a major lag at 3500 rpm and throttle response is a bit funny but i hope this will clear it up
Hi Derrick thanks for the comment. Two unfortunates with the guys as with new jobs and relocations we're no longer close by to go on these trips together any more though I think they're all still riding. Sadly one of the guys has passed away and the motivation to go as a group has dwindled. There will be more trips on the channel just not with the same guys unfortunately. Thanks for asking.
Excellent review, thank you. I'm going to fit one onto my 2000 ST2 Ducati to see if it smoothes out the lumpiness at low speeds around town....this has helped greatly
Pureblood, help stop it going chalky, every now and then use "00000 Fine Grade" wire wool (that's super soft, its that good I use it with autosol on my 50yr old triumphs) or get some green scotch brite from the local corner shop, use with wd40 keeps it a treat, I've had 3 be-ems am currently on an R75/7 for last 20yrs, mint 120kmls+ clocked up, you want that clean alloy look but not over the top m8

Wow..Thanks for sharing... ...Glad i found this.. Been dreaming of taking up motor cycling and doing a ride like this...Just got to book my CBT and maybe direct Access at ridesafe training at Alconbury first🤞.....Covids made me realize what's important in life.... Living your dreams... I've been listening far too long at people keep putting me of riding....I can't wait to get out on a bike... I'm not bothered about speed, might even see if i can be done on a 125...Look forward to viewing your other videos...All the best Marc 😁
The only way to do Wales is to wait for a dry spell and then drop everything and just go. If you pick a specific date and have to stick to it you're gonna get wet. Some years we only get 5 good days in the whole of August.

Time and weather my friend. It kept us from going to so many places. We had serious issues drying kit after a days riding so had t change our plans drastically. I take we missed something special
Great job Tim! Fantastic you put your Dad's bike back on the road... I can imagine the pride and emotion you both felt. Great story and good on you! Now for the other classic, the Kawasaki 🙂
Superb job! Just given my R100RS a paint job and turned her into an S, although my paint finish is a long way short of yours. As you say, they've got character, I wouldn't trade mine for anything
Gr8 vid. Thanks. BTW Ever-increasing speed enforcement forced me to stop fighting a losing battle and downsize to a 350. I in fact have a lot more fun than madly frustratingly trundling along on a fazer thou.
Very kinds words, thanks for the comment. Just watched your video on the BMW Polaris, never seen the knee guards before and it was nice to hear it running, sounds a little like mine.
What Product did you use on the Aluminium Crankcase Ect? They came Up like New! I was thinking if Bead Blasting, but if I could get the Same Results as you, Id be more than Happy to Follow your Leed! -Cheers👍🇦🇺😉
Hi Carlos, I made a promise to myself that if anyone asked this question I'd be honest though I deliberately left it out of the video because I knew it would split the room. I didn't want to strip the engine down too much so Bead Blasting was outof the question. I started with wire brushes (drill bit type) and used white spirit and Gunk. This didn't do a bad job but nooks and crannies like the fins still looked a mess. I did try an acid which didn't help much so ended settled for heat resistant engine paint. I know this goes against the grain for some but the result is so good no one who's seen the bike in the flesh has noticed. It also protects against oxidisation in the future.
@@Tim0Photo Cheers Tim, It Seemed there was a Bit of Magic at Play!! 🎩🐇 I think I might do the Same!! I understand the 'Puretains' Would Scoff @ the Idea, but there Usually All Talk- No Action!!😉 The Results Speak for themselves!! Even with Bead Blasting the Finish Won't Last Long!! & Will Eventually Go 'Chalky' like it was when you Started the Rebuild! Possibly It Could be Blasted & Clear Coated, but that's a Gamble, that it Doesn't start to Yellow with Age & Heat!! I think you got the Right Silver, is Silver or Aluminium Pressure Pack Engine Enamel? Or Some Special Cocktail applied with a Spray Gun! Thanks for the Info, & Much Respect for the Resto! Its a Real Gem!! -Cheers👍🇦🇺👍
What you have so lovingly resurrected is an absolutely beautiful motorcycle. I owned a R100RS in smoke grey for quite a few years, and now am riding a mint condition 1999 R1100S with only 25K on it. Rode it about 50 miles this morning. Thank you for taking the time to document and narrate your work. One of the most classic motorcycles ever built.
That was a fascinating watch...I admire you for bringing one of these beautiful machines back to life. I bought one in 1981 and the 3 and a half grand you've spent was roughly what they cost back then! I really wish I had kept it now to hand over to my son. Best wishes...
