This is a three day backpacking trip I did in April 2024 to see how my knee would handle getting back on trail after injuring it on my attempted thru hike of the Ouachita Trail last month. Short miles and early camps made this a really enjoyable trip for me. With not much in the way of excitement, it’s a video I put together just to touch base on happenings with friends. The trip did allow me to continue more break in time on a few new gear items that I had only a short time with on the OT. I hope you enjoy and thanks for watching!
Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) National Grassland is a national grassland located in the Great Plains of the northern part of Texas near Decatur, and within an hour's drive from Fort Worth. It is primarily used for recreation, such as hiking, camping, horseback riding, fishing, and hunting. It has a land area of 20,309 acres. The grassland is administered together with all four national forests and two national grasslands located entirely in Texas, from common offices in Lufkin, Texas. The units include Angelina, Davy Crockett, Sabine, and Sam Houston National Forests, plus Caddo National Grassland and Lyndon B. Johnson. Local ranger district offices are located in Decatur, Texas.

Nothing better than waking to a great sunrise and a small herd of deer. Love that backpack and I'm looking forward to seeing your video of the Colorado trail. Glad your knee is doing better Thanks for sharing!

Hey Rob! Thanks for stopping by! It was fun doing short miles, getting to camp early and just hanging around for hours just listing to nature on this trip. I'm looking forward to Colorado. It'll be a rough trip but oh so rewarding!✌

Thank you, Kim! I really needed this trip after that OT trail. The deer were a surprise. I came across an entire pack of hogs on trail day one but I wasn’t quick enough to get them on video. lol.

The place I was camped in sees very little human use. I’m sure the deer were not expecting anyone to be there.my knee still has issues at night. It stiffens up a bit overnight but it’s improving with each passing day. Thanks for watching, Kevin.✌️

I absolutely LOVE the grasslands, it is so beautiful and peaceful. The cows were wanting to hang out with you yesterday and the next morning, the deer wanting to hang out with you. Life can't get much better than that. I have really been wanting to go back there and do an overnighter or a weekend trip there. I just need to learn what you have learned by connecting the trails together to make it a longer hike. Thank you for everything you do Jerry, it's much appreciated sir. Ride That Tasty Wave

I had a relaxing trip. I wished I’d stayed a couple more days. Yeah, I like this tent and it has its pluses but I can’t yet get it set up as quickly as my Duplex yet. Not sure that’ll be a plus trying to beat a hail storm on the CT. lol. Thanks for watching!✌️

Absolutely love your thumbnail picture. The lighting was great around your night 1 camp. I was just about to ask if you were already done with your plexamid solo but I heard you say you were still deciding. Your Offset looks nice. I need to get back into a DCF shelter.
@tangenttrails
@tangenttrails 2 месяца назад
Thanks, Cameron. I’m going to start doing more exploring there in the future and find more off trail dispersed places to camp. I really like the Offset. It’s just I haven’t gotten to use it enough to feel comfortable on getting a quick setup but I’ll get there. I’ve got three months to achieve that before I head to Colorado for many days of pitching it during monsoon season. lol.

Planning a trip out to do the yellow trail soon, going to do an overnight at the pines. Would you recommend this for a beginner? Also do you usually loose connection on the trail?
@tangenttrails
@tangenttrails 2 месяца назад
That is great! Are you starting at TADRA? if so, I suggest you do the trail clockwise. Just before you get to the pines, you'll pass a pond on the left, that will be your water source that you can filter from for camp. I would not use the other sources that are on the right after you start into the pines. Or, if you have a Grassland map, you can cache water in the pines, County Road 2560 runs right behind the pine woods and there's a wooden trailhead gate. I wouldn't trust any connection to the net while on trail. I use downloaded maps on my GPS app. I do get cell service when I camp at the pines with AT&T. Enough to call home if I choose. Otherwise, I keep my phone on airplane mode the entire time I'm out there to conserve the phone battery.
@Spazz983
@Spazz983 2 месяца назад
@@tangenttrails thank you so much! This is beyond helpful. Feel much more comfortable going out. Was worried about the quality/availability of the water sources, was going to just carry it all in making a heavy load.

@@tangenttrails just got back from the trail, it was fantastic. But I did use the ponds on the right after getting into the pines, I had remembered it wrong at the time. I’m sure I’ll be okay but thanks again for the help!
@tangenttrails
@tangenttrails 2 месяца назад
@@Spazz983 Hey! I’m glad you got out there. I’ve used the ponds on the right in the past. Just when they were more full. As a rule, I prefer not using water sources next to an area where lots of people have been camping unless it’s a flowing source due to “bathroom” runoff. lol. But that’s a personal thing. It’s probably okay.
