This is a difficult and unfair position to find yourself in. Especially as you are developing in the role as well. If you are keen to stay where you are, it’s best to set up a meeting with the boss - who asked about progress. You could simply say, “further to our conversation, I would welcome another opportunity to discuss how to improve things. I suggest we discuss what you would like to see as well as my suggestions as to how improve things.” Something along these lines will do. You also said you all report to a manager who isn’t HR experienced. You do need to raise this point too. I would also set up a meeting with the manager in questions and simply say you are keen to help and improve things and discuss what your objectives could be. Be professional and simply helpful. If you decide to leave, then I hope this has been a lesson for you to ask all sorts of questions. Especially about the HR structure, plans etc Hope this helps. This is what I would do. Anything is better than staying silent. You will be seen as proactive and helpful.

@@Srikeshvu I see, so you work in a very hierarchical team. Here you go a couple of things to learn how to manage upward/people around you: 1. have a meeting with your immediate manager to agree objectives and expectations if possible to avoid any confusion 2. ask them how they would like to work with you, how to report progress etc (is it a weekly meeting, or an email update for example) 3. every time you meet with them and you have a meeting, summarise what you discussed and agreed. So for example, "let me summarise for my notes, you would like me to focus on x, y , z" 4. always ask for a deadline, when they expect your work to be completed by. Again this is to avoid any confusion, if you need more time, simply ask for it and explain what has happened, what you have put in place and your suggested deadline. 5. be brave to suggest solutions and ideas. Simply say "I have been thinking about x, y, z, I am keen to get your feedback." Always seek to collaborate and partner. Be helpful at the end of the day could be your line. Hope this helps for now and the next year flies by to find some else in due course unless things improve where you are.

Can i say workplace planning and Succession planning are same?
@SanjaWilliams
@SanjaWilliams 2 месяца назад
Hi. They aren’t the same but succession planning should contribute to a workforce planning process. Workforce planning - which can be operational or strategic - is all about business demand and supply of resources, succession planning identified key roles and critical people. Both process are rarely done properly in many organisations as HR in the U.K. often expect a business to drive it and they don’t have time so it gets ignored.

Hi Karoline, first of all congratulations on doing your master's degree. I assume it is in HR. If not, what have you chosen to focus on? In order to work in HR, there is no essential and formal requirements, although people do complete courses, often study for a degree in HR etc which does help and looks good on your CV. Do you have graduate schemes in Germany as they are a great way into this field. Graduate schemes are very popular in the UK. What did you study as your undergraduate degree?

@SanjaWilliams
@SanjaWilliams 4 месяца назад
@@tanya7550 Ok all noted. As you mention you work in NHS, have you considered asking their HR teams about best options to transfer. I am sure they offer apprenticeship scheme and graduate schemes in HR. Salaries can be lower but if you do want to transition explore it internally first. This is what I would do. Salaries do go up so it wouldn’t be forever on a lower salary if you can afford it. I often find people want to make external moves without exploring internal moves first. You as an internal employee would have better chances than external ones. So as your first step, contact someone in HR to explain the routes etc sometimes you could transition and transfer as a normal role as maybe there is HR compliance team for example or operations etc and work your way around without apprenticeship and grad schemes.

I have recently taken over this role. Just landed up on your channel and finding it useful, thanks. QQ- As a HRBP we get a lot of unscheduled calls in between, how do you manage your focus and also how do you prioritize and accomplish deliverables / tasks for the day?
@SanjaWilliams
@SanjaWilliams 5 месяцев назад
Hi, random calls to you from managers or employees will depend on which HR operating model you work in. So if you have shared services, HR operations in place who deal with initial queries, then those calls need to go them to respond to or emails to respond to. In large organisations, managers and employees need to raise a ticket in the system. If there is no such thing in place where you are, then you need to re-contract with your allocated business areas as to what they need to contact you for. Try to do some analysis as to what they contact you about it and produce FAQs docs or links or information you can provide. Also, try to schedule an hour of each day to review and respond to emails or missed calls. You dont have to answer it as soon as they call you. If you have teams, perhaps they can drop messages there and you can respond when you have allocated the slot each day to do this. This work is viewed as reactive and I can see why you wouldn't want to do it. How big is the HR function you work in? Large organisations are great at this, small to medium you can expect all sorts of things to do you would never do in a large organisation that is set up properly.

How can an employee who wants to be on another’s succession plan get on the radar to be considered for the role when the person in the role moves on?
@SanjaWilliams
@SanjaWilliams 6 месяцев назад
They need to raise this with their manager and/or their HR Business Partner/HR manager to represent further and ensure it is on a relevant succession plan. Very helpful video. I'm a fraction COO transitioning to HRBP. I'm looking for a list of tools I'd use daily to help support senior execs. Thanks, Sanja.

Would you please clarify what do you mean (if family in place) is it the available replacment from family members as an example ? Thanks, so much
@SanjaWilliams
@SanjaWilliams 9 месяцев назад
This is a great question. In terms of family members to inherit and run a business, you are a limited here in terms of options as it will go to a family member regardless, however, the same principles should apply if it is not clear to whom it should go. Assess if they have the right skills and behaviours required to run a business if not assist with training or simply find other people who they can rely on for their gaps. Is this something you are dealing with at the moment?

This role is an artificial ideological construct invented by David Ulrich a few years ago. This is one of the typical successfully promoted pseudo-useful consulting tricks. The key question is what exactly this so-called HR business partner is ACCOUNTABLE for and what decisions he/she has the right to make. The problem is that when they try to explain the role of HR in the organization, and in particular, the role of the so-called HR business partners, they forget to emphasize 2 things: 1) that it is managers, and not HR, who are accountable for the staff subordinate to them, that is, it is a manager (not HR) who is accountable for a) the working behavior and work results of their subordinates, b) the teamwork of subordinates, and c) the enthusiasm/engagement of subordinates. 2) any (not only HR) employee of an organization is, BY DEFINITION, obliged to partner with all stakeholders in the organization. Therefore, guys, PLEASE stop mindlessly repeating, like parrots, mantras about the HR in general and the HR business partners in particular. Turn on your heads and finally understand that you should not stupidly list the functions of these artificially created roles. Try to realize one single simple thing: EVERY HR specialist must be able to partner with all stakeholders in the organization. There should be not specially created "partner" roles in HR or finance, or logistics, or marketing, or in the legal department. If the employees of the organization do not know how or do not want to interact effectively, then no dedicated HR employee (whatever he/she is called) will solve this problem. Management and only management should be held accountable for this. And about HR, it's enough to simply say that 3 things are expected from ANY specialist in this field: professionalism in his/her function, business understanding and leadership (as from any other specialist in any other function in the organization).

Will do, great suggestion to get me back on track with making videos. We all need to be aware of it as an employee and also as someone who may support this process as a manager or HR person.

Hi Evelyn, yes. Is this an HR consultant role for a consultancy that provides people advisory services or in house for one company only? Just to add, I have gone for a senior people consultant role for Capgemini and my examples worked. I was offered the role. I declined it as I was offered another one I wanted. Happy to support you in your interviews and work projects. You can always book a call with me when required - www.focusyourself.co.uk/book-online Good luck Sanja

Hi Sanja, I'm a btech graduate who has completed MBA in HR and currently working as an HCM software consultant in IBM India (1 year experience). Can you give me some suggestions to start my career in UK?
@SanjaWilliams
@SanjaWilliams Год назад
It’s really difficult for me to suggest if you need a work visa to live and work here. I am aware that many people from India come to study over here which would allow them to work part time - 20h a week. When they graduate they can stay for 2 years without a sponsor after which they need a sponsor to stay.
