Great stuff mate. 👌. Those sequence patterns are epic. I love Zadar. I just wish there were more 'normal' envelopes rather than dozens of 'wacky' ones.. 😮. Cool video effect too. What are you doing that in?
Thanks, Probbie! I got Zadar especially for the wacky envelopes! I already have plenty of normal ones and I just need some interesting repeatable shapes. I'm still doing all the video with HitFilm Express. It's a bit clunky but I'm not sure if I'm ready to learn something new.
Even though CV sources may not be the sexiest to buy at first, it is exactly these modules that make modular playful and useful. All other things can be done in a DAW easily, but the unexpected modulations from CV sources make it all worth it to me. Thank you for showing us your tools.
I've been having a lot of fun coupling chaos (Marbles) and Bloom but I'm using the 0-ctrl kind of how you describe using the Voltage Block. I have a copy going to the root CV and one to the rate CV on Bloom with Marbles influencing all of it. Cheers!
Thanks for the comment! Random stuff all controlling each other is where the fun is! I also like running a Turing Machine into the address CV in on Voltage Block with each track going into a different CV in on a complex oscillator. Makes for a great rhythm element!
you've got just about every VCO I do, plus about twice as many more. That's a lot ;) But just wanted to say: 1. I agree about the Ensemble. Probably one of the reasons I have as few oscillators as i do - I can get so much out of it. It's also inexpensive compared to a lot of others. 2. I like the Black Wavetable maybe a little more than you, but in essence I agree. I kind of want to say it DOES have an FM input - one of the modes uses the CV in as FM in, but it really doesn't work like I expect FM inputs to work so I'm not really sure what that's about. Also when I bought it there was a second voice chip available but it became discontinued shortly thereafter and I never got one. You've kind of got me wanting a Pizza now.
Thanks for the comments, and good to meet another EnsOsc fan! Since that episode, I've replaced the Black Wavetable with a Modbap Osiris and I'm never looking back! It does sooo much more in the same footprint.
@@allhandsmusic I tend to keep the black wavetable set to one of the couple of formant type voices, because I like that sound. At some point I'll be swapping it out for something. Haven't thought much about the Osirirs. There are a lot of things out there :)
The studio visit wasn't to make a finished piece. I just left the groove we were working on in place, and continued patching. I kept the elements they came up with, but did massage them a bit. 😉
I do this on my Subharmonicon and get indutrial vribations, airplanes, choppers and typical conflict zone sounds and a whole lot more..... I call this technique 'riding the filter'. Someone please come up with a better name. Thanks for this video.
Filthy engine noises ftw! Not sure what the best name would be, but when I hear "riding the filter," I think of adjusting the cutoff by hand in a performance.
@@allhandsmusic There's a handful of original Mangroves out in the wild still (i.e. Reverb) at any given time, but the new ones solve some problems and provide that PPM side-module that really blows the modulation into the stratosphere. Sounds _SOOO_ good imo, and I'll own one eventually❣Meanwhile most of the Mannequins modules are either discontinued or have super-ultra-short release windows that not even God could slide-in to score product. I think Cold Mac was set to "Let us know if you want more" years ago and then never followed-up on by them. Just how indie devs do their thing, but yeah🤷♀
Thank you! I've got four different reverbs working different voices; Beads, Timiszoara, Desmodus Versio, and Tiptop Z5000. The first three are each on just one voice, while the Z5000 is end-of-chain glue for everything else.
great idea! could try to bring another output of that vcf back into the fm input of osc 1? controlled feedback loops can be so much fun in modular world. Just got myself the Nekyia VCF, which again is loosely based on a CGS Serge design. That one is also highly recommended for creative filtering…
Magneto and starlab and the mimeophone is all I need when it’s come to fx. And once you warp your haad around beads you will realize what a genus emilie gillet was and this module could be the greatest Final Cut for her
I sold my ensemble because I bought spherical wavetable navigator. Now I really miss it. Not that the swn one of the greatest modules I ever owned, just because they’re different. To me the star of the show should be the telharmonic which I swapped 2 years ago for couple of module. After whipping my ass off I got one back couple of days ago. I really really missed it, but if I didn’t swap the telharmonic for those modules, yet I didn’t have the unbeatable delta cep a from radical technologies which I swapped for the modules I swapped the telharmonic for. either delta cep a nor telharmonic will ever leave my system again. Did you ever tried telharmonic is shift register modes through rings?
I feel lucky I managed to pick up Telharmonic for a reasonable price used. Nothing else quite sounds like it! Still, I'm sometimes frustrated by it, but that's modular for you. Through Rings is interesting.
Sounds great, and a great explanation! For those who don't have oscillator sync, I wonder if running the two oscillators into a sample&hold would be another way to create a stronger relation between the audio signal and the modulator.
@@politesociety but by clocking the sample & hold with the oscillator, the voltage changes at audio rate (is audio). The rate of change becomes synced to the clocking oscillator-a sort of chaotic waveform where every step is equal to one cycle of the primary oscillator.
@@kilo_llama that's essentially just down sampling your oscillator to the frequency of the clock, and in FM terms you are essentially just applying a very fast arpeggio.
@@politesociety I think I understand what @kilo_llama means (pls correct me if I'm off base). If the S/H trigger and sample source are both in the audio range, you can produce some wild sounds that are straight out of '70s gaming consoles. I gave it a try just now, and it works great! Different from the original patch, but very useable! I used osc A as S/H trigger and also filter FM, while osc B is sample input. It also works using osc B as filter FM. The fun really started when I added hard sync on top of that. Time to explore some more... thanks @kilo_llama!
You mentioned that you think you don’t have much in the way of effects but it seemed to me you have oodles. What might help me gauge how much you have, relatively speaking, is knowing the total hp of your system.
Thanks for your comment! I guess I'm doing pretty well in the FX department nowadays, but that was sort of how I felt before I picked up Nautilus, when I really wanted a dedicated delay. It's really more about having a variety of effects to choose from for me. I like to have all my bases covered! A link to my working setup is in the description if you want to take a look. I tend to use lots of layers and textures at once, so everything is getting put to good use!✌️
@@allhandsmusic Examining and comparing, I see our systems are similarly sized but I have much less in the way of effects. I’ll get more in-rack effects after my other thirsts are quenched … maybe! haha
@tracyharms3548 I think it all comes down to how many voices you typically use -- I can easily have eight, and I like to treat different voices with different effects. I also mix directly from my rack in one take without overdubs or effects in post. If I had room and a big bag of money, I'd add an Arbhar and Spectraphon too!
Nice vid you have some good gear there I just couldn't pull the trigger on QPAS but I really miss the MMG also miss my optomix is V2 still vactrol based?
Thanks! I do often highlight the most central modules I use in my performance videos on the thumbnail, and sometimes have a further breakdown in the description.
Thanks so much for this. That feature is not in my manual at all! It seems there are three selectable levels, and mine was set to the middle one. Now I've got it on the highest, and it does help! 🤘
@@allhandsmusic It was not in my manual either. I think I stumbled across that in a forum somewhere. Also I hadn't thought to run fracture through rings.... oh my!
