We got the 1974 version secondhand circa 2000 and bounced off it hard. Obtuse rules, and the game board was too small relative to the counters, are my main recollections!
So this is like a duel, where the two knights, that are also wizards, and are like let's not use guns. Let us hit each other to a certain point, like fight club. Lol imagining the movie fight club, but with the characters of Mage Knight 😅😂 Also, your transitions are so good. I hope more people like and subscribe to your channel!!
Great game and series. I already watched all once , when bought and play game a while ago. Now i'm back to game and forgot and watching again, looking for answers. Question about how crown priority list works like for transfers with manager of shiping and others roles. If thers multiple choices for transfer from first priority, two ships in 16:19 here. So does crown use tie braker, make the transfer and skip the other eligible pices and for next transfer goes to second priority and so on? Like if crown would transfer my pice, I'll prevented with a cube. Then it would skip next one so i dont have to spend cube for that
The more i watch the more i can tell how potentially fantastic this game could be, if only I can get my head round it. Stumbled my way through first reconnaissance more by luck than skill... Looking forward to trying this one, thanks for the inspiration!
I asked a solo Facebook group for advice on what videos to use for learning the game (the book overwhelms me and I don't always absorb everything by reading), and this was overwhelmingly recommended. And watching this, I can see why! Very clear and understandable. Thanks, disembodied hands!
I may have missed it, but is there any distinction between the expansion cards and the base game, like an icon or something? Say you play a 6 player game and then want to restore the decks back to 4 players?
Geeat series, really helps. There appears to be a conflict on the 2 person faction set up though. In that Beauorts faction has the chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster but stafford's faction has Lancaster, so who controls what?
The town of Lancaster and the Duchy of Lancaster are two different denominations - one is a town and one is a title. The duchy is a collection of estates awarded to the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, and it just so happens that this does not include the town of Lancaster; instead the Office of Chancellor of Duchy of Lancaster gives the holder access to the Town of Conwy in north wales, because the Chancellor of the Duchy title is awarded a collection of estates in north Wales . Confusing I know, but it reflects the way parcels of land were awarded to different office holders.
looks really good as a solo game. I like how the overpowering of the bot is balanced by getting to make the worst choices for them. Looking forward to getting this. Thanks for the playthrough.
I got this game, had no interest in multi handing so just combined the 2 decks for each side into 1. I felt the game was a bit underwhelming tbh. But after watching your video (and you always seem to have this power) im suddenly intrigued to try it out as separate decks. it does look way better that way.
Thanks for the well-made video. I found the Senjutsu instructions quite confusing. I got along better with more extensive instructions such as for Gloomhaven, Sword & Sorcery, Burncycle and others. You explained the rules very well and implemented them in the game. I particularly liked the camera work and the references to the rule booklet, so it quickly becomes clear where I can read up on certain rules if necessary. You also explain the rules quite comprehensively and in detail. For me it was very helpful.
Greetings! Your solo mode is amazing. Great job. And thank you very much for the video on JK - they helped me understand the rules. I'm playing 1710 so far - I'm absolutely delighted. I plan to play through all the scenarios at all difficulty levels solo. Now this game is in my top. From Russia with love (c). Thanks for the work you've done! I am delighted.
@BoxofDelights Hey Ricky, I just watched another video where the bot activates a battleground only if it can conceivably win so in that case the event card should have been cycled instead cause it wouldve been an easy 3 points.
Yes - I believe the designer has clarified. As it stands, there is no rule governing Events, so I have just been playing them; but you are absolutely correct, that the designer has [on forums] qualified that you should also apply the usefulness and 'conceivably win' rules to events too. Perhaps I shall call the 'always play events' rule a house rule for making things a little easier!
I really appreciate that you take your time and do not rush through it. I have been watching some videos to find out, if I will enjoy this game as a solo game and now I'm going to order it :)
@@BoxofDelights lol, I mean, an on the box 1-n players, like Scythe, or some mission scenario like Mage Knight, etc. But yeah, haven't watched the series yet, cause I always saw 2-4 players and 'best with 4', so I assumed it was no good on solo. (busted ;)
Thank you for teaching me the rules. You answered a couple of questions I had. First that you can only fortify the same strong point twice a turn and that you can besiege several times. I was interested to see you manage the political tracks. The biggest thing was you explained the red/blue side in the manual. In the new print they are not red/blue but the manual is still using the older description.
I've really been enjoying these last two videos. In addition to the 'deck labels' you made using the turn tracker and the two extra ring tokens, would there be any other new tokens that came with the game or could be useful? I'm asking because I got some custom token replacements from Etsy and would love to order some more to prepare for my pickup of Fire and Swords.
15:00 it looks like the new path is of a slightly different tint that the original ones. Is that the case? If so, it’s unfortunate. How is the balance with the number of battlegrounds for each faction? My gripe with the base game is that if all battlegrounds for a faction have been resolved, that faction is basically useless (similar to characters and low path numbers). Even worse if you’ve only got such factions in your deck…
Re the path tint: this is a pre-production prototype; it's not the final game. I did check with Ares and they assured me that the card backs will be the same in the final product. The expansion adds 9 new Battlegrounds (4 shadow and 5 free peoples), so you should be good!
I think you mixed up Against the shadow expansion deck with ordinary evil factions expansion deck when you showed the new cards Because Goblins of the Misty Mountains in base game don't have 'if eliminated for any reason cycle this card' only Against the shadow Goblins of the Misty Mountains have that All in all amazing review
Hi Ricky! Would you recommend the card game over the board game for solo play? Theres gonna be a reprint of the BG in my country and I'm wondering if it's still worth it
The boardgames doesn't really support solo play, so yes, for solo, the card game is your choice. However, if you are happy playing both sides in a solo-not-really-solo-kind-of-way, then the board game is in a class of its own.
@@BoxofDelights thanks for sharing your opinion! I'm on fence because I have never played a wargame 1x1 both sides before, but I also find the board game really impressive. Your playthrough is also really helpful and well done. I just wonder if one can really have fun playing both sides. I'm very used to solo gaming, but that would be my first experience. War of the ring is pretty long too so there's that
The game is inherently cooperative, since it is a team game, even with just the base game. If you mean cooperative as in 2 or more players cooperating against the game, that was introduced in the "Against the Shadow" expansion.
Great preview! It seems like in epic duel mode, cards will be added into the decks in sections one by one. Is that correct? And if so, are they added when you have to refresh your drawpile? Do battlegrounds get added in sections as well in this gamemode?😊
In Epic Duel mode, each player's deck is split into 3 sections (of 45 cards, 25 cards and 20 cards each). They start with their section 1 deck, and with the section 2 deck in their cycle pile. The section 3 deck is set aside. Once you cycle through your deck for the first time, sections 1 and 2 will be shuffled together, and then you add section 3 to your cycle pile. Likewise, the battlegrounds are divided into 3 sections, with each containing specific locations as described by the scenario. You start the game with just the section 1 battlegrounds. When both players cycle their decks for the first time, the section 2 battlegrounds are shuffled in; and then once the decks are cycled again, the section 3 battlegrounds are shuffled in. You can see the game is expected to be much longer, and that's because there are twice as many paths: for Paths, rather than having 1 of each path number, there are now two: so there are two Path 1s, and two Path 2s, and so on. So you progress paths like this: 1->1->2->2->3->3... and so on. Hope this answers ! R.R.
Thanks for the in-depth preview Ricky, I'm looking forward to your solo playthrough. I've only recently purchased the core along with Against the Shadow and am yet to win a game but I've enjoyed each play so far and feel like I get a bit better each time. Good luck for your playthrough.
it's certainly on the list of possibilities; but not our TOP priority (top priorities are: solo, 2-player, co-op, and an automated opponent to replace a player)
we will be sure to look at this option. As it goes, the automated opponent could work to replace 1 or many players; but whether that would require additional components (e.g. more than one deck or more than one set of mood cards) is the issue, and whether additional sets would be economically viable; but we will certainly be looking at it.
Hi There. Just wanted to check with you.. If I can Bleed away the AI deck, with a bleeding wound, and the AI runs out of cards.. do I just reshuffle or what would be the result? Thanks
Great playthrough! This game really seems to tell a story as it evolves. The difficult decisions made by the player surely parallel those made by the defensive force years ago. Thanks for sharing.
you can set the city to whatever level you wish. The SCENARIO you are playing will tell you what it recommends the city levels be set to/ For example the Solo Conquest scenario says, "Cities: the first revealed city is of level 5, the second revealed city is of level 8." But if you want to change them to make the game easier or more difficult, you can do.
You only gain 1 Fame for revealing a tile in the First Recon scenario: it was a way to help new players level up more quickly. Marauding orcs are always placed face, irrespective of whether it is day or night. You might be confusing them with the rules for Mage Towers and Keeps: these are face down, unless you are adjacent during the day, and are always facedown during the night.
@@BoxofDelights ohhh correction wat i meant one level up is one fame up, sorry hahaha 😅... and thank you for the correction, ive been hearing different rules from other people and the rulebook is kinda overwhelming for me to understand but im glad u straighten it out, tnx 👍
Food for thoughts here (and maybe you already thinked about it....) : as we've noticed in this video, the servant automa would gain in efficiency if it was able to prioritize which relics to steal (or even destroy/hide it in a stash somewhere when it doesnt want it in the game?). Instead of going for big charts (really love GMT for solo, but I totally gets thats its not for everyone), why not include little numbered stickers in the extension, to stick on relic's card? So, when the automa go afterx your relics, it would aim the higher/lower number. They could even be colored to figure what the automa would do with the relics (keep it or... figure how to throw it in mount doom!) Anyway, great job so far! Backed this kickstarter as soon as I seen your name involved... Liz acting as the icing on the cake!
