Hi there is me RetroMania. On this channel you can expect retro gaming content like video game retrospectives, console retrospectives, general retro gaming topics, maybe I will even sprinkle some modern game videos here and there. So if you like gaming, you can leave a sub. I will try upload content consistently.
Wait, wait, did you just call the Souls games "fighting games"? That are _"just button mashers"?_ My man. Also, for the love of god, balance your fucking audio, all the transition songs have reduced my eardrums to limp mush, and i wasn't even wearing headphones.
@@Just.Kidding I said warriors Musou games are button mashers what they are, I never mentioned Souls in this video. When it comes to audio I think my newer videos are better, I usually don't think about earphone users when I make my videos.
Here let me save you a click: #1 = Gravity Rush #2 = Soul Sacrifice Delta #? = Freedom Wars in somewhere in there #rest = a bunch of generic waifu RPGs and a few games that are interations of ones on other consoles (Uncharted, Katamary) and even some that aren't even exclusive (All Star Rumble)
@@DevanteWeary First of all all of these other games are still fun, they might not be your cup of tea but the are very fun (if you are into these genre). Second of all I mentioned at the beginning of the video in my into that most games on this list are only on the Vita but some games will also have a PS3 or PS4 version, I still put the criteria that all games must be PlayStation eco system exclusives, you will not find one game that is on a different platform be it PC, Xbox, Nintendo, Smartphones... It can change in the future but at the moment and at the time I made this video these were all PlayStation exclusives playable on the Vita most of them only on the Vita. At last a small nit pick but you misspelled Katamari.
Mad respect for Folklore in the 2nd place spot Just surprised I haven't seen something like DarkStalkers or Bleach which were out of region exclusive multiplatformers from what I understand. :3 Still was happy to see something I was familiar nonetheless hehe
@@binarystork7006 With Bleach you probably mean Soul Resurrection, the very last Bleach console title up until recently! Can't wait to see how the new Bleach game plays like. I think the series is way too popular to really put it in hidden gem category and it was the last console title, so many people at least heard about it. I actually never heard about Darkstalkers and I am even more shocked to hear that it is from Capcom, is definitely one of their most niche Capcom titles. Thanks for the recommendation. ☺️
only one i would knock off here is muramasa, since you can BARELY call it a hidden gem with how much talk has it has over the last 5 so years vanillaware even wants to rerelease the game for modern platforms.
@@DarkSymphony777 Fair enough. The game was a hidden gem but recently it became a cult classic! It happens with many old games, gamers buy these old games used decades later, get them recommended maybe even emulate them and then they love them, it happens often. It just shows how much better we had back then, so many cult classics, so many bangers!
@@Official_RetroMania agreed. i put in a lot of hours to both muramasa and pandora's tower (and even then pandora's tower is only forgotten because it lives in the shadow of xenoblade chronicles.......and that massive game breaking bug in the english version of the game)
Folklore is to this day one of the most unique jrpgs ever made, underused setting, interesting summon based action gameplay, intriguing mystery story, it's a shame it got forgotten and never got any sequels or remasters.
Actually this was made by Game Republic, who also made Majin and the forsaken kingdom, and the two Genji days of the blade games They shut down after declaring bankruptcy a few years after Folklore came out
@@kermitwithamustache3885 Ohhh okay because I think I remember seeing the Japan Studio logo when starting the game, could be that they are the publishers or something. I searched it up now, they helped them out, on Wiki it says: "Additional work by Japan Studio and Gaia". But either way is sad that Sony got rid of all of their Japanese developers, rid of their Japanese legacy, the company definitely changed once they moved headquarters to California (for the worst).
@@vitalitymirth I looked up prices no the American or European copy of Tears of Tiara 2 is around 60-70$ give or take. Most of these niche games keep their value especially JRPGs.
@@stashmerkin9576 Good pick! I did heard of it but never played it. I did however read the Northstar manga because I always wanted to see what inspired JoJo!
@@Official_RetroMania I did not know Fist inspired JoJo! I don't follow manga/anime too much. I'm not far into it but so far it controls very well and is fun. I do get the feeling that if I had read the manga I'd be getting more out of it. But going in blind I'm still having a good time.
@@stashmerkin9576 North Star came first and the art style and fighting and jokes do resemble that of JoJo, I see JoJo as the spiritual new successor to Noth Star. I will definitely check out the game, thanks for the recommendation! I almost forgot it existed lol.
@@draketungsten74 Fez is on pretty much every platform you can imagine. Great game! Really cleverly made puzzles that require the usage of the 2D and 3D camera perspective movement mechanic, sadly the game sometimes does tell you what to do, it hold your hand often, what I also mentioned in my review in the video.
Definitely a wild list. Cyber Sleuth with all the mandatory side cases to progress the story that aren't all that interesting to begin with. Scarlet Nexus having some of the jankiest and least fluid combo strings I've seen. Somehow SMT IV over Devil Survivor Overclocked (IV is really good, but I think both Devil Survivor games are better, especially Overclocked). And never in a million years would I have expected Monark to receive a placement on anyone's top RPG list. Other than that though, props for including Trails in the #1. Personally I think Sky the 3rd is better than SC, but the first two games combined are one of the best stories in the series and in RPG history.
@@iMidnightStorm This just shows how everyone's taste is different and that's fine, because Sky the 3rd is not my favorite Trails game by far! (Sorry, still enjoyable though, like all Trails Kiseki games). I also really loved MONARK, I said it at the video as well I knew MONARK would be a "controversial pick" still I loved the game a LOT, or you love it like me or you hate it, I have never seen someone having a neutral take on MONARK. But I am happy you still liked the rest of the list and if you have time you can also write me your favorite RPG's! I would gladly see what RPG's you enjoy. 😊
@@iMidnightStorm Also when it comes to Devil Survivor, I didn't played it... So I can't really judge it. If I did maybe it would be above SMT IV, maybe not... Who knows. I do plan on playing some of the older Atlus games in the future! 🙂
@@huskymirai5824 Not all games only the I think 2 Japanese games absolutely require a modded system to be played with fan translation. Ohhh and maybe 1 or 2 games that are exclusive to the 3DS E-Shop but that should be a given because you can't buy games online anymore. Every other game that is available on a physical cartridge can be enjoyed without modding.
Great compilation of games brother. I've platinumed some of these games and have been following some of them. But a lot of new ones discovered too. Indie games are just awesome. Thanks a lot!
@@8-BitFryup-ru7pk I thought that would take too much time, the video ended up almost 40 minutes long even without me mentioning the platforms. You can easily find the platforms for each RPG in a Google search. Also thanks for the nice words I appreciate it! 😊
@@kawaiitruck-kun3616 I didn't play any Grandblue games but I the series looks great from what I have seen. Is definitely on my radar and a game I will play in the future for sure!
Arise isn't even in the top 5 of Tales games. It's a good Tales game, but hardly worth mentioning. It's just the only Tales game that BandaiNamco bothered marketing to a western audience.
@@alfredonavarro9526 If you think so that's fine. I loved Arise granted I didn't played that many Tales of games only 3 thus far, Arise, Berseria (what was my last times game I choose in my top 15 list) and Tales of Xillia 1. I want to play Symphonia and Tales of Vesperia because these are the 2 games I usually get recommended the most to play oh yeah and Tales of the Abyss I almost forgot. I liked the gameplay of Arise is a simple one like most Tales of games but it was fun and clean, I loved the music and the graphics and the story and characters, I do think the first half was better but I loved the ending because I am a sucker for happy endings specially when it comes to marriages and seeing 2 characters kiss and yeah... Very soft in that regard lol.
I respect you highly for adding Grandia to your list and even ranking it very high but I am shocked you didn't pick 2 over 1 since I considered 2 a straight upgrade. Also sad that there is no Final Fantasy 10 anywhere on this list, even though it vastly beats 7 in my opinion.
@@Endlave I like both 7 and 10 equally but I choose 7 because is more of a "classic choice". In regards to Grandia 2 I loved the second game but I enjoyed 1 slightly more (my personal opinion) but I think both are amazing, only Grandma 3 was ehhh okay not bad but vastly inferior to Grandia 1 and 2.
There aren't even that many NPCs in Chrono Trigger. Try talking to every single NPC in a Trails game, every single time they have something new to say (like I do).
@@guruthosamarthruin4459 The difference is that talking to every single NPC in Trails is not "required" yeah you sometimes stumble upon a "hidden quest" but these are not required to finish the game. Chrono Trigger works completely different in that regard but Sky Dialog is also so well written that even most NPC's have something interesting to say and in some cases you get a whole side character (main character ish) story arc from some of them! I like Chrono Trigger but I do believe there are many other older RPG's that are better.
@@Kingepticon No idea where this comment came from but I don't hate or like Souls games and this goes for any Soul like, doesn't matter which developer it is. Souls games are also not really "classic" RPG's they play completely different compared to other western RPG's. Also the holding hand comment makes no sense. Having quality of life gameplay mechanics is not holding your hand is saving you time, I don't want waste hours searching for that 1 NPC I most likely missed who had the information I needed, is old level design what doesn't hold up in modern age where games have improved over the years and there are classic very old games that hold up much better nowadays compared to Chrono Trigger, like Grandia as an example.
@@Official_RetroMania You said you didn’t know where to go in Chrono Trigger because the game didn’t make it obvious. If you knock Chrono Trigger for its lack of quest direction then logic and inference tells me you’re going to hate a game with almost zero quest direction.
@@Kingepticon Maybe but I don't like the gameplay of Soul games anyways and I don't play them. It's not because of the quest direction although if I played these games for longer maybe that would be another critique I would have. Also critiquing one aspect of a game doesn't equal hate, I still like Chrono Trigger what I also mentioned in the video. When it comes to Souls games I don't like them I don't hate then, frankly I don't have any opinion on them because I don't play them, so I feel inadequate to critique them.
@@KaiSaeren Thanks! It was a hard decision because I love all Trails games but Sky SC felt like the perfect one and Estelle is one of my favorites girls together with Renne and both of them get an amazing story arc in Sky SC! So yeah lol.
I found you from a comment you made on The Quartering. You just gained a new subscriber. I'll keep an eye on you and if I like what I see I'll make a short and promote your content. So far so good! 👍🏻
@@BreakOutOfTheAlgorithm Thanks a lot! Yeah I am a long time fan of The Quartering, I find his content very entertaining and I usually agree with his takes. You don't need to promote me but if You want I won't complain, thanks! 👍🏻
@@Hertman779 Legend of Dragoon is a really great game! It definitely has a unique gameplay style and visual look and a story telling style that you hardly see nowadays.
@@nostalgiccrisis2038 Thanks a lot! I think every game on this list deserves recognition even place 25 even Shadow Hearts! You can't go wrong with any of these. I would also like to see your toplist! 🥰
@@nostalgiccrisis2038 I was doing retrospectives before but nowdays rarely, they usually don't do so well on the channel. If I ever do another one or two they will be a passion project.
I hope growlanser 1 is on the list someday... (also bushido blade 1 is wayyy better than 2. 2 is a longer game with more content, but it kinda sucks and it didn't seem to get the point of the first game)
@@Aperez Is not a standard even today, you will rarely see Japanese games with English subtitles. I think many Koreans games do have English option but rarely any Japanese versions.
@@indy5280 I can confirm that it does work but it takes time and effort. It will not fix it 100% but it will make it look much better, try it out for yourself if you own a manual with similar damage like I did
@@Official_RetroMania Looks like RU-vid absolutely bugged out. This comment was supposed to go onto another video where there were games with horrendous manuals and cover arts. Including many grails for the ps1. Like so bad that the paper is rock hard
Having 1 as the best is DEFINITELY just your nostalgia bias seeping through into this video... in no world is it actually better than XC2 OR XC3, especially in terms of story and gameplay... but i can at least agree (i think???) that XC3 is better than XC2, but just slightly.
