I’ve enjoyed watching your videos, so thanks for sharing. This one in particular got me curious. Am I missing something, or are you running a lot of red lights? I can’t tell whether there is a title green light for bikes, or whether the rule about red lights is different if you’re cycling in a bike lane.
Nice video, brings back memories of living in Auckland. I think i prefer cycling in Sydney with blue skies and warmer weather. You should checkout a few of my rides. ( a new subscriber)
Oh no! It’s been a pretty rough commute the last week for sure. I’ve got a Trek Powerfly 4 with the Bosch performance line motor and a 500amp battery. It’s clocked up 13,000kms since 2019 and still going well. It’s been serviced professionally 2 times and had gearing and a cassette upgrade. The chain needs replacing 1-2 times a year! It’s been great and would recommend it. The only issue is now that Torpedo7 is winding down, where do we get our Trek bikes serviced?
Absolutely. I think the council has more development plans in store for it. I did notice the uphill path ends randomly, but I may have missed a sign. 🤣Thanks for your feedback. 🙏
@@BikeDispatch haha nah it does just end there. You can go right and up Vincent Street and there will be a new cycle lane on Pitt Street soon. However that Queen Street uphill is usually pretty good - not too many cars use it.
You’re easy to understand at least for this Aussie. Love your work. Just curious-what make and model is your e-bike? I have a Giant Talon e+3 and love it. Also - can’t believe you don’t wear gloves in the chilly early Spring weather. I’m in Newcastle and still wearing long fingered gloves. I must be soft, just like our Wallabies haha.
🤣thanks! The Ebike i ride is a Trek powerfly 4, 2019 model. 99spokes.com/en-NZ/bikes/trek/2020/powerfly-4 It’s clocked up 13,000kms on it’s 500amp battery which seems pretty good. I have noticed the amps don’t draw as much as it used to if using turbo for example. It really pays for itself when the weather is heinous or windy and my other bikes are grounded. I def need new gloves, you right! 🤣🙏cheers🇳🇿
Yes, there’s quite a few options there. You can bike to the viewing areas on Puhinui Road but there’s also less known places too near Ihumatao and Rentons Beach. I should do a video on that😀🙏
haha yeah I usually just bike up Queen Street instead these days. Taking out thru traffic means its nice and safe - bit of hill action for the last 400 metres or so
I think the council is exploring a bike path from portage rd papatoetoe, through mangere east into favona that links where you popped out at the end. Continues into otahuhu trainstation. Cool vid bro.
Yeah there was a plan to have the boardwalk extended over the river and link into James Fletcher drive but I think the budget all got cut in the Covid cuts and seems to have fallen off a bit. I think having this signposted better would be helpful in getting more people to use it. Funnily enough this path opened about 4 months after I finished commuting along james fletcher to Otahuhu. Wish it had been there then!
The brits love their roundabouts too (checkout the Magic Roundabout in Swindon, UK). I find myself giving thank you waves to cars when going through roundabouts, to thank them for stopping and not hitting me. Onehunga Mall is certainly the fastest way from Onehunga to One Tree Hill, but it has to be one of the less enjoyable routes in Auckland. For my weekend rides when passing through that way I tend to explore the back roads which take a bit longer but are much more interesting to ride along. I invariably end up at the top of Rawhiti and enter the park there. Anyway, thanks for the ride along.
Yes! Roundabout ettiequte, I do the wave as well but I’m definitely on standby for runners. Thanks for the alternate routes for Onehunga Mall, I’ll try those😀
The 2 way cycleway at around 1:00 looks bloody confusing might just be the dark tho. Auckland has some weird cycling infrastructure... Love the content :)
Yes it is a bit confusing, especially for non locals or cyclist that don't pass through there very much. On a positive note, it definitely slows down car traffic to the point where they sometimes give way to you as if it's a pedestrian crossing. Hey, thanks for your feedback!
What are the two lights you have? It may just be the camera perspective, but it does look like you ride quite close to the parked cars? Number one fear for me is having a car door suddenly open in front of me, so I tend to leave as wide a gap as practically possible. I do have a rear mirror on my RH grip which I find a great safety feature for riding in traffic.
Half of my daily commute is in full darkness so I really need quite a bit of lighting. I have two lights in front, one is a Cateye and the other is a very bright LED that runs off of 2s lipo battery. In the rear I have a constant Cateye on the seatpost and a constant LED light on the back of my helmet for elevational awareness. During daylight I tend to use flashing lights. The Gopro makes it look a lot faster than what it feels in real life. I'm quite risk adverse and tend to ride the same roads every day working out quirks and features of each section. Car doors suddenly opening is a common issue for me as well as people just stepping out into the road to get to their car door. I always try and maintain distance with cars even though it doesn't look or feel like it in the video! Thanks for your comment and stay safe out there!
Your commuting videos shows prime example of why there should be safe main arterial bike paths in and around auckland, not many people like to risk getting to work and home on busy streets on bikes, perhaps you should invite the transport minister and the high cats at AT for a commute ride some day and see if still have the same opion after the commute lol
Totally agree with you, and riding along with the Transport Minister in Newmarket and Manukau Rd- 3:30pm rush hour instead of the Lightpath would make a great video!
Fun video to watch, you guys make it look easy. I just started getting into cycling and that uphill section after the pink light path was tough for me. I need more practice but I'm keen to check out the rest of this bike path soon.
That’s my light. It’s more like a spotlight though. Grunty and very quick to switch between high and low beam. Designed for mountain bike trails I think but great for winter commuting.
Amazing video, I’m enjoying watching it. I noticed that you’ve waiting for a minute at 16:25. If I were you, I’d jump on that path and go to my route to save time
Re: Hunua Traverse. Man, that ride is a beast. You really need an e-bike with reasonably wide and grippy tyres. I wouldn’t recommend trying it on a normal bike, but keen to hear your experience if you do!
