You know what else is an underrated castle theme? Nexo knights. It is a castle theme, as fantasy era castle is canon to nexo knights, as shown in the knights academy book. It’s also my favourite theme (knights kingdom is second)
I was 17 back then. I wasn’t around when most castle sets were made, so this was my first entry into castle that I could buy myself. Have all the sets, and later bought about a dozen battle packs. Personally love these sets.
I can make up the lore of the whole LEGO Castle Dragon Knights Factions (which will also include every Dragon Knight faction, the Fright Knights and probably the Shadow Knights too) if somebody wants that. If one of you guys wants to hear the story that I made up, let me know, please:)
Hmm, I made a complete Lego castle lore map, but with your video, I just realised the trolls had a war ship. My trolls are pretty landlocked. I’ll have to make them have access to the sea… back to the drawing board!
Great video and I’m happy you mentioned so many positives that this theme brought to many peoples childhoods. I was definitely one of the biggest fans growing up. My favourite was no doubt Jayko, thanks to his storyline of being the youngest knight. But I love them all. I remember being so stoked about the third wave and was hoping the theme would find a way to keep going thanks to the new, awesome looking gen of knights. Sad it didn’t happen but if someone from Lego is reading this, please give this theme a farwell shot. Something so we could hold our heads high for subscribing to this theme as kids! Keep doing good work, great video and thanks!
Felt like it ended too early without an elven faction. Kingdom's and Castle 2013 were good follow ups but then Lego went off on Nexo knights for way too long.
I think the lore you mentioned is likely to be true. I don't recall every detail, but I remember visiting the lego castle website in 2013 and reading that the two archer minifigs from the castle set are twins.
With the Dungeons & Dragons themed set coming out, this will give Lego collectors the PERFECT opportunity to break out past fantasy themed Lego stuff and use them. That is, until Hasbro creates more of their own D&D themed minifigs and setting builds to add alongside the new one coming
You also forgot to mention the old lego RTS halo wars vibe game that was one 3ds i think? that had the knights set in, which featured even more medieval units, it was really fun to play as a kid, too bad it never got a full PC port, you can find it on flash game websites nowadays but the controls are a little janky.
@@BronzeBricks1 ah I remembered the games name, it's called "Lego Battles" Like I said in my original message you can search it up on flash websites if you want to attempt to find a working copy of the game otherwise there is plenty of old media for it.
I grew interest in castle from Jang bricks when he originally aired the videos. One thing that I loved that you mentioned is how much it cost to have the complete collection. Back in 2017 I bought the entire line of ebay for 400$ brand new sealed. With my limited amount of funds and interest in castle I had a choice, buy everything used from the kingdoms line, or buy castle 2013 brand new. I love and don't regret my decision. People these days are so biased for kingdoms, it definitely is the better line, but it was too expensive for the average person. I feel 5 sets was affordable, reasonably priced, and the quality of figures and sets were relatively the same as kingdoms. I actually think the design for the king's castle 2013 is much better than the kingdoms castle. I wonder if this line had more support at the time if they would have continued this line and had additional sets, perhaps being added to the kingdoms lore as well, as the blue knights are former red lions, and same for red dragons being former green dragons etc. One thing you didn't mention is that they had a video series on the official Lego RU-vid channel and the 6th chapter has an epic fight at the end. I definitely feel like if it had succeeded financially, we would have had a red dragon castle in the second wave. Because we never got a red dragon knight castle, I use my Lego Vladek's dark fortress as the main castle for my red dragon knights. I hate to say it, but castle fans killed Lego castle, not Lego themselves.
2013, 10 year old me, loved the castle theme when it released! I actually liked the design of the red dragon knights so much that I prefered them over the "good" guys (never gave a damn about the wizard tho). If I'm being honest I still like the design of the red dragon knight more than the green ones, although that might because I was too young while Kingdoms was around and never got all the sets of that theme. But even so, I remember that I loved the fact that the red dragon knights user war axes a lot, and I just thought that was awesome. It's really unfortunate that Lego seems to completely forget about their older themes sometimes, like kingdoms/castle and pirates
I’m in the same boat, I was too young for Kingdoms and only got sets of my parents bought them at the time. I’m split down the middle when it comes to the green or red dragon knights, but if I had to choose I’d probably go with the green ones, but I do think the red dragon knights fit the part of the evil faction better. It would be nice to have a legit castle and pirates theme back instead of just getting $200+ sets every 6 months!
It just looks so good with the castle.. there is nearly endless play value with a whole town and castle and so many factions of minis already... wow... just needs more animals... which I have been collecting since I got he castle... I will likely want to upgrade some of the buildings and add some other little things like a water well, and another market stall. I agree though the tax collector is better off as a one off character that makes him special. hes done perfectly, from choice of head to everything (except sticker tile)
The biggest drawback from these sets are definitely the stickers. I should’ve mentioned the lack of animals more in the video, but I’ve bought a few extra horses and other farm animals to fill out the pen behind the cheese makers place. I’d like to upgrade the set or even add other builds as well, but I need to improve my piece collection beforehand!
yes, stickers are the reason I was not a day one purchase but waiting for a good GWP. It is a major turn off, but I really like some of the minis. and the build overall, though some I may separate and turn into more buildings. I want to complete the guarded tower and inn. I have a lot of vintage and mis 2000's bricks from my own and nephews collection (its huge and filled with parts of some of the most famous castle sets) , to go through, but some of these modern colors and special pieces I do not have much of. @@BronzeBricks1
I loved the red dragon mini figures, which they probably my second favourite after Falcon knights. However sadly with many castle themed lego mini figures and sets that came. Nothing came for those themed factions for medium and large set ideas to go with them, and then ended being forgotten !
I remember immediately dismissing these when I was a kid. It was greatly disappointing to see Kingdoms go and then be replaced by this. If only there was a more Ninjago-like castle theme. I actually think Castle 2007 would've held up better in Lego's modern ecosystem than Kingdoms, however. You could've had a rotating roster of enemies with the same good guys, Skeletons, Trolls, maybe a year where the Dwarves get offended, lizardfolk, and so much more fantasy races.
That would’ve been cool, there is technically a lesser known Elven faction in the fantasy era that Lego never did anything with outside of CMFs so Lego could’ve introduced them to keep the theme fresh. I do agree that fantasy would do better in today’s Lego, but I feel like more people are wanting the classic castle factions than anything else.
My big problem with this theme is that the torsos for the lion knights just aren't very good. Seriously look at them, take for example the figure at 2:10. The breastplate printed on only covers the ribs and not the whole body and they have a random chain as a belt, it just looks goofy.
I think with the design of these guys you can replace the arms and fit them in with the crown knights. I do agree that they look goofy, it’s almost like Lego couldn’t decide on what they wanted for the faction and mixed together element of previous factions.
Green Dragon Knights are better (more original color scheme - and cooler decorations). I do like the red dragons, though I think they didn't need to be dragon themed again xD.They could have just keep the designs from the kingdoms line - and make it a different lion faction and differnet dragon (wyvern / whatever) faction with the color schemes they chose, but the same design language so they can be integrated, not meant to replace kingdoms. This being said, a few dragon knights won't hurt anyone, and the crown knights can be easily integrated in other "lion factions". They have merit, just not as good as the previous waves.
I agree, I definitely lean more towards the green dragon knights. Like you said they’re more unique and they also have pearl dark grey accessories which are extremely hard to come by these days. I do think Lego just did a redesign of the Kingdoms line with this theme
I bought the shit out of this theme. I loved this theme. The blue lion knights are clean and crisp, the black dragon knights are fantastic and had really good and expressive heads. The real charmer of this series though was the dragon.
I totally forgot to put a picture of the red dragon in the video, but I agree. The colors of the factions go well together and make it easy to good from evil
I'd take this or any Castle theme over what we're getting right now, but I'm moving now towards alternative bricks because i don't think Lego is doing right by us.
It would be nice to just get some cheaper castle sets, I think the ones that are coming out now are too expensive for most people. I’ve looked into alternate Lego but never bought any sets, how similar are they to Lego?
Castle 2013 just looked to cartoony. The more serious look of Kingdoms appealed way more to me as a kid. The Kingdoms figures looked like knights while the 2013 ones looked like toy knights. Kingdoms totally could have had a dragon.
Wasn’t terrible but I passed on it for the most part after going hard on Kingdoms. Got barding for the new horse mold which was nice but some of the builds seemed a bit juniorized especially after getting the detailed kingdoms joust just a few years previous. I think it was a let down because of high expectations for a revival of the black falcons.
It definitely does come off more for kids than the Kingdoms line that’s for sure but it is Lego and that’s what they’re geared towards. I liked Kingdoms a lot more than this line due to a lot of what you said, more detail and I think Lego put more effort into it.
i personally like the colors that where there, because it made it possible to army build, a group of both. i heard a lot about the hatred of, the castle theme in general and it was just art nerds crying about how the colors weren't this rainbow of variants of one color, i even read a lot of comments screaming about topics on Facebook, that reminded me of the art room in high school. they sounded like a bunch of professors screaming by way of their keyboards, i'd never seen such abuse of the capitals lock key, on the keyboard since i was kicked off of reddit. i would have liked it, instead of treating castle like black Tron or other space themes, coming up with sequels, like it was a Disney movie, if Lego had an updated version of the series instead of rebooting the theme. like what, is Lego, Netflix now?
The Green dragons are imo one of the coolest line of knights in all time. They look so cool! And that green colour just hasn't been done before, not really.
They are definitely more unique. The colors Lego chose for them fit so well together. I think the red dragon knights are cool, but the green dragon knights are a tier above them
