I am lauren and I am a 4th year PhD student 🥴 I talk a lot about grad school, my planners, and navigating academia (and life in general) with obsessive compulsive disorder. I drink a lot of coffee and feel very passionately about organization, true crime, and french fries. Hope you will join me on my journey!
Thank you so much for sharing your process! This is almost *exactly* what I've been looking for, in terms of handwritten research note-taking. It's kind of a struggle to find examples of research notes online. I'm an older community college student and a volunteer docent at a contemporary art museum, some of the artists in your notes we're lucky to have in our permanent collection. During one of our docent training sessions, we were assigned to read bell hooks! Currently, I'm taking art-related notes in an XL hardcover gridded Moleskine but I've been considering getting either an A5 Leuchtturm for the numbered pages or a Stalogy, which I haven't tried yet.
@@theoryof.lauren don’t forget age discrimination- I am here to tell you that it is alive and well - people forget that those of us who are still passionate about our professions (like speech pathology still have a lot to offer but we don’t want to work full time - congratulations on your areas, I happen to fall into that category but sadly also the semi retired with lots of experience
Please forgive me if this is a dumb question (i'm half asleep...) what type of book are you using here, Lauren? Also, how do you create the dates? Are they a sign-tape maker that you just type in the date and it then gives it to you in that typewriter font on a clear tape?? All the BEST to you in your studies, writing and preparations!! You Are AMAZING!! The world needs more people like you doing this kind of work... Making A DIFFERENCE!! Thank you, Lauren! ☮ ~kari 🦊
Hey Kari!!! not a dumb question! It is an A5 Common Planner from @Sterlingink 🤍 for the dates I use date stickers from @Plannermonkeyco so it's super easy! thank you for always supporting me 🥰
@@theoryof.lauren Thank you Lauren! i just rec'd my copy of "home coming" by Thema Bryant, PhD!! I’m just beginning to read it and realize that last week I listened to Dr Bryant being interviewed by Rainn Wilson on Soul Boom podcast! i love Roxanne Gay's writing too & have Bad Feminist & really enjpy her writing (& reading her book reviews on GoodReads) and her essays. So grateful for you & your channel, Lauren! This world is a better place for having you in it! Take Care of YOU!! ~kari 🦊
What a treat! I just got to my destination (I’m at an all day conference for work tomorrow) and I have my Thai takeout and I see you post a video. I felt so blessed! Thanks as always for sharing :) can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the academic year planner
i just found your videos and i need to tell you how much i relate to the pressure of mental illness, and also the way a long project can take over your sense of scope, til you need someone else's opinion to tell you that it's still good. i had a similar turning point recently and it was SUCH a relief ... thank you for the videos, so so much, and your thesis project sounds fascinating. (seriously! i studied sociology and the ways od culture is still my first love.)
At 29:12 you have some cool art (gray floral) at the bottom of your Stalogy. Is that from a PET/washi company, or maybe cut out if a magazine? Thank you 😊
Come for the Stalo-Nichi Planner Porn, Stay for the AutoEthnographic Reflections! I am here for more of this introspective observations and examinations. Leaning into Life Long Learning all the way! ❤ ~kari, WestCoast Canada (an appreciative retired 65 year old former hospital/health social worker)
Awwww Laurennnnnn!!!!! 🥲🥲🥲 meeting you and talking to you about everything and anything planners and life was also such a HUGEEEE highlight of my weeeekkk!! 🥰🤍
Hi Lauren, I’m loving this video! Way to go with your PhD candidate. I obtained my BSW at UVic and knowing people who continue on in academia AND presenting at conferences you blow me say!! I have a question which will be minor for you but I had a “minor” stroke a few years ago…. Can you please tell me how you make mood/vision boards these groups of photos and then you put them in your planner please? I love the way they look and how you can express your creativity that way. Also, I’m going to follow your IG! Thank you so much! kari in Victoria, BC ☮️
yay new lauren video!! i also got the common planner this year and i've been loving it (tho i will say i have been inspired by you and bought like 4 notebooks/planners from plannermonkeyco 😂 i'll figure out what to use them for lolol) so glad you're feeling positive after meeting with your committee member!! keep at it, you got this 💪🏾
Im so happy for you that school is going well. As always, I saved your video as a little treat-I always love what you share! I’m in a common planner too and didn’t even realize about the little dots!!!
I'm so happy for you that you got a positive response from your committee member and you're feeling better about the direction you are going. Validation of your efforts can really make a big difference especially when you've been working towards a goal for such a long time. You sound like you are so cozy with your new setup.
You absolutely influenced me to go to a freely noted+ (in a5!) and it’s absolutely been the best decision i made!! I was in the cousin and hated that i was so far ahead with my journaling compared to the actual day. (I was writing in march while in february because of how much i journal!) I did want to get a sterling ink but I can’t give up the black cover of the freely noted ! (Plus i love the 4 mm grids and just all of it lol )
I'm also terrible at keeping up with multiple books. I love to track my reading though, so now I keep book shelf stickers in my planner, and note the books in each month so I can see the books on a yearly level, and on a monthly level.
thats so smart!!! i would love to find a more cohesive way to include reading stats in my planner. right now they're just kind of scattered anywhere and everywhere 😂
Lauren! Huge fan of yours, and love all your posts. Can you provide some insight as to why you chose the PlannerMonkeyCo free pages over the Stalogy or Sterling Ink?
I hope this comment will encourage you to continue making videos because even though you mentioned you're anxious about speaking out loud, you're doing a great job! It was fun hearing about what you use each journal for.
