This channel is dedicated to classical forms of grooming, exploring historical and modern barbershop products, styles, and experiences. We prefer to review these forms with some historical and cultural contexts when practical, and to promote grooming less as an act of vanity, and more of an exercise in self-care and personal expression of self-worth.

Currently, we focus on products and styles that have had appeal to American men through the 20th century to today. We'd eventually like to venture out into similar studies of male grooming throughout the world, and find collaborators that can share classical grooming perspectives of women as well.
We appreciate your participation in this venture, and ask you to subscribe and support the channel in any way that you can.

Thank you again for all you do!

I find your reviews and comments to be very useful. My only suggestion would be to correct your use of terminology and use the term "fragrance" as opposed to "odor" which is defined as an offensive or repugnant smell. Thanks.

Thanks! You are not the first person to point this out, and I think that I am better at using "fragrance" in my later videos. I still catch myself sometimes using "odor" thought. Thanks for being part of the channel!

I have only tried the Clubman Hair Tonic and I now only use it as a bedtime application to break up and comb through the matte cream (JS Sloane) that I use during the day. I found that if I applied it in the morning after my shower AND at night before bed, that it would dry my scalp and it would break out in blemishes. I do love the scent? Maybe I could use it as a body splash? 🤣

It’s a shame that the Eau de Quinine does not contain Quinine as it did originally. The Quinines primary use was probably as an antiseptic since people didn’t tend to wash their hair as often back in the 1800s and early 1900s but despite the science not being discovered at that time Quinine is shown to be good for Hair growth and stimulates Blood flow in the scalp. I’m guessing it is a cost cutting measure to not include quinine but it is a shame and a bit disingenuous considering the name of the product. Would make a good alternative to using other scalp stimulating hair products such as caffeine shampoo. It smells great too.

Great explanation of these products. I have been using them for a couple of years and I like to apply them out of the shower to kind of get any residual product or oil out of my scalp before I apply styling product, usually a hair oil or pomade. One note I should mention, on the Pinaud site, there is a warning that the Quinine version is not recommended for lighter hair colors. My hair is the same color as yours and I just ignored the warning. By the time I got around to my next haircut, my barber said "Are you dyeing your hair pink now?" I said "No." But he held up a mirror to my scalp and sure enough, my hair was a very pale shade of pink. So, I switched to the Portugal and my hair is back to normal. 9 out of 10 times these days I go Shower - Pinaud Eau de Portugal - Gabel's Rose Hair Oil. Cheers! -Scott

Do you prefer eau de Portugal to the original clubman tonic? Also can you use hair tonic on freshly shampooed hair and then use a blow-dryer? Or will that make hair sticky?
@BeautyofScent

Can you put hair tonic in the hair and then use a blow dryer to dry the hair ?
@smartin5534
@smartin5534 3 дня назад
@@BeautyofScent I prefer Eau de Portugal because it is a clean scent which is great right out of the shower. Although I love the scents of the Original and Quinine, they wear slightly more as a fragrance to me. As opposed to Portugal which I feel is citrus-y, but neutral enough that I can use other fragrances with it and they won't clash. Like a Pinaud Lime Sec or something.
@smartin5534
@smartin5534 3 дня назад
@@BeautyofScent I'm not sure on that one. I don't own a hair dryer as I usually comb in an oil or a pomade. No hair drying necessary.

I decant into glass bottles I get at Walmart Neighborhood Market. I use the Spice, Blue Spice and Coachman a lot and really like them. For the pennies these guys cost, you can't go wrong. 100% agree with you on the first two. The Bay Rum and Dragon Noir are not worth the time or money. If you want to throw a couple others into the mix that are distributed by Clubman, the Jeris Musk and Osage Rub are a couple of sleepers that are also pennies and work fab.

I love the powder. It was always around at my dad's barbershop. Its scent brings back memories😊 I never thought if it smelled more like the musk instead of the original, but now I will have to see. Regarding the corn starch instead of powder...maybe it was talc back in the day until it was realized that talc was extracted from the same minerals as asbestos?

I totally agree with this video. I think that Joop! Homme is much better and more sophisticated than most people think that it is. However, Joop! is like playing with fire. Through painful mistakes I have learned that Joop! is all about sillage. Some fragrances are not supposed to be smelled directly. Joop! is supposed to be experienced as a subtle fragrance and at a distance. Up close it smells like cough syrup. From a distance you can pick out the sophistication.

I used Jeris before the weekly personnel inspection when i was in the USMC. When the haircut was marginal and to avoid a zinger from the Officer inspecting, I'd put Jeris on liberally around the ears. Inspecting officer would notice hair growing close to the ears but the scent smelled like i jumped right out of the barber chair. Since it smelled like a fresh haircut, Id get the pass.

I didn't much care for this one for the initial two, perhaps three tries - mostly because I was only taking notice of that first "Blast." Yet, after it mellows - "Dries" to an almost powdery feel/scent, I've almost finished this first bottle. I've been using it several times a week. As an old-fashioned New Englander that always likes a bargain, you can't go wrong here. Last I knew it was less than five bucks on the Amazon Prime. Morning... I'm a huge fan of the old school, "Vintage" aftershaves, and I can't believe I've somehow completely forgotten about this one, "By Mennen." Thus - I just now ordered up a bottle on the Amazon Prime. @indiejams9887
@indiejams9887 Месяц назад
It's a pretty good tonic, but like most of these products (Vitalis, etc), a company basically just owns the rights to the name. People aren't actually using the "classic" tonic or using the same formulation that people in the 50s were using. The ingredients are completely different from the original. For example: the ingredients in the classic version of the tonic were: 8- Hydroxyquinoline, Resorcinol Monoacetate, Tincture of Capsicum, Fixed and Volatile Oils, Ethyl-alcohol. The version that exists now which uses the Jeris name contains alcohol, glycerin and boric acid. I wish that Clubman would make a version that is closer to the reality of what the original contained. The main reason I seek out classic products in the first place is due to my belief that many classic drugstore formulations and remedies work better than those with trendy modern ingredients.
@classicalgrooming
@classicalgrooming Месяц назад
I would agree. Another example: Lucky Tiger hair tonic on the front advertises being made from "fine oils", while the listed ingredients has none. It's unfortunate to a degree, but I find the products still useful, and sharing a sense of history is important. Thank you for your great observations and being a part of the channel!
