I am a huge fan of the NSA slugs. I’d get several weights from about 20gn to 38 gn and see what works best for you. You can tune your gun to the one that works best by adjusting the regulators, or valve spring knob. Each will basically adjust the velocity of the slug then find where the barrel harmonics works best. (Most consistent shot groups and smallest group size) H and N heavy slugs have also worked very well for us right out of the tin. No luck here with the FX Hybrid slugs Great question and thanks for your feedback and support.
Group size don’t usually trend proportional to distance shot comparing say 50 yards to 100 yards. Good rule of thumb expect 3x the group size at 100 vs 50 yards.
Thats a tough question. It isn’t overly expensive, but install isn’t just plug and play. I would say yes, if part of a larger modification including slug liner, slugs over 42gns, hammer weight, and maybe reg 2 upgrade. It alone won’t get you much performance. Ultimately, it’s up to you and if it aligns with the longer term goal. Btw, love the profile pic. I am new to reefing and have a pair of mocha storm clowns. Love them!
I see you guys haven't uploaded in 7 months, are you planning on making more videos? I enjoy the laid back, normal straight talk and your Father/Son relationship. Please don't stop now, I just subscribed lol... Thanks for all you have made so far, definitely hope to see more!!!
We were just talking about that yesterday. Yes, we plan on more videos. A bit of transition as Logan graduated and started his career but things are stabilizing and we are planning on getting back to it. Thanks you for the encouragement and support! 🤙🏼
Yea it’s a known fact that pellets require a slower speed around 875 fps to 900’s those speeds with the Hades were to fast you guys probably recognize that by now Lol but those Zans and FX Hybrids are my go to in 25 cal
You got it and yes, one adjustment to slugs is the higher speeds. Dynamic physics are much more complex than I originally estimated. The FX Hybrid never dialed in for us but it could be an adjustment on our end. Just not as accurate. Thanks for the comment and support! 🙏🏻🤙🏼
Since you guys both have that rail under the bottle, it might be worth getting a mount to put your chronograph there instead of on the barrel. Then you could check accuracy at the same time since it won’t mess with barrel harmonics from it hanging there. Nice rifles, I think they’re both setup well. Makes me want to pick up an M3 and sell my old one.
Thanks for the compliments and support. You are correct. I’m actually thinking about upgrading chronographs to one that would not be mounted and would be for all our firearms. If we don’t upgrade, a mount is definitely needed. Thanks for the support and feedback.
Need to tell us what reg pressure and ammo, every setup will be different, im shooting 40gr slugs at 1040fps, the ronin really quiets it down, but thats a lot of power, interested to see if the yokazuma is better
"Do longer barrels matter?" Yes and no. It depends what you're trying to achieve. Longer barrels will generally net you more velocity at a lower pressure- i.e. more efficiency. Typically, you CAN get the same velocities with shorter barrels, but you'll be spending more air to do it (it'll also be louder). In both cases, there's limitations. There's a point of diminishing returns with barrel length- i.e. too long, and you're doing more harm than good. With short barrels, depending on the projectile you're trying to launch and the target velocity, you may not have enough barrel to get there. It's all a balancing act.
You are correct. A balancing act indeed. The longer barrel also leaves the slug in contact longer so movement is the shooter or system plays a larger role. I found out I’m less accurate with the longer barrel when I thought accuracy would be improved. Thanks for the comment and feedback
If you do the install expecting significant gains in performance you maybe disappointed. If you add it to other modifications or enjoy tinkering with things then the value is there. It’s inexpensive but moderately complex installation. I would do it again but not solely for performance gains. Thanks for your comment!
Charles Hornady said in one of his old loading manuals, if a Man could get a. 177 caliber pellet running 5,000 fps, you could drop an Elk with it, Great video thumbs up
I’d agree with that statement assuming a well placed shot, and clearly Mr. Hornady is much more knowledgeable and experienced than I. Thanks so much for the feedback and encouragement. Appreciate you!
@@bowmanoutdoorsHi good day dear bro, do you question? You think Fx Panthera .177 cal 20 gr slug Will a 700mm beat a 600mm in the accuracy department?
@kricketkricket6737 I would love to get my hands on the Panthera and wanted to buy one, but I’ve already got so much invested. Judging the reviews and information I find, I think you’ll be happy with either! Slugs do better with the added stability of velocity and spin. Those two variables should perform slightly better with the 700mm barrel. With the slug in the barrel longer, a bit more of it will depend on your skill and flex in the barrel. You should get higer velocity from the 700 though. The 600mm is a bit more portable and with less length, theoretically marginally stiffer (less flex). I’d pick the 600 personally as it will get a moderator and added length and flex with that. For me, 600 is plenty unless you are going out to extreme ranges of 150yds+. If that’s the case, I’d go 700 for the added range. Hope this helps and great question. Thanks for your support and comments!
@@bowmanoutdoors Thank you for your help, you have a nice, high-quality channel. I do groupman and hunting with minimum 55 yard, maximum 110 yard accuracy. For example: If I buy 600 mm and 55 yards with 1.5 sm accuracy, 70 sm and 1 sm accuracy, otherwise the same?
@kricketkricket6737 thank you for the compliment. I am not sure I understand your question fully but for 55yds to 120yds, you will have no problem with the 600mm barrel. It would be my preference, but it is a personal choice. Pellets are a bit less expensive and less grains to choose from but should be single hole at 55 yards shooting sub 950 fps. For slugs, find the one your barrel/gun like and tune for that specific weight and you are golden!
Hi Guys, Really a great vid. Question... Is the Trident Airgun Moderator in the same class/field as the Shogun or Yokozuna? Very much appreciate you're out put here on the tube.
Thanks for your support and question. I’m not super familiar with the trident, so let me do some research and get back to you with an answer! Stay tuned and I’ll find out.
I forgot to include it in the video, and couldn’t figure out how to put them in the comments. I’m still learning this whole thing. I did post them on IG though. @bowman_outdoors_ga Thanks for the feedback and support! 🙏🏻
I've shot my Chronograph probably 15 times. But they all skimmed off the top and didn't do any damage, you are in no way the first to do that. It's a very easy thing to do because of the bore / scope plane discrepancy. I also wanted to mention the first shot you took at 958, and left it out as an outlier, is something you need to consider normal. When you shoot the air and plenum get really cold, so when the gun sits, that air gets back up to ambient temperature and obviously becomes more pressure. So, the cold regulated air left in your plenum, once warmed back up. is actually a higher pressure than it should be, and it becomes slightly harder for the valve to open. So the reason I say you should consider it normal, is because if you are hunting, it's the first shot that matters and so you need to figure out how to correct for this without taking a few dry fires. Maybe 2 clicks more hammer spring or something, but you get what I'm saying. You said you were thinking about lubing slugs, I lube all my ammo. I use a bowl with a cloth draped over it that is pretty saturated in super lube, food grade silicon, and poor the whole tin in and roll it around like you are panning for gold, keep the cloth sort of tight so to make it like a trampoline. This puts a very even coat of lube and gets off any of the lead dust or flakes.
Again, only for hunting purposes, because you aren't going to scare a target away with a dry fire, but it almost makes sense to have a separate first shot Strelok profile based on an average of first shot velocities. At 140 yards, my first shot, when the gun has sat for a day or 2 or more, hits the ground 2 feet in front of my dropdown target. Thats never going to be a hit without figuring this issue out. This would get me in the ballpark of knowing what I need to do anyhow. It's literally the exact opposite of a cold bore shot since you are warmest on the first shot, and cooling down the more you shoot.@@bowmanoutdoors
This was complete waste of a video, the speed you gained is what you would gain by just simply rotating the barrel 180 degrees. Tune the guns now with the kit and see if you can get those 40 grain slugs over the 850fps mark now with the mods. It should be able to get those 40 grainers over 1100fps now
Sounds like you loved the video. 😂. We will try your suggestions, but I currently do not have issues with getting slugs fast enough. I just want to stay clear of the transonic zone to assist with ballistics and flight stability. I could try going much faster though and see if it helps. I currently have too many variables to get very consistent and precise results. Thanks for your feedback and comments
Thanks for the comparisons. Definately get the first rfegulator on like 170 and that second regulator on 150 bar. Vlave dial on line 4 or close to it, and see what your speed is. Start at 1000fps, and turn in valve adjuster until your speed starts dropping. this setting is best for power as well as less air consumption.
It's not so much the overall volume, but with the Yokozuna it's a much more metallic and high pitched sound than with the others. Feels like the sound is much more compressed and less lenghtened and evenly distributed across the wave length. Probably because the fill is missing and the design being modular and not made from one piece of aluminium. I personally prefer my Emperor over the Yokozuna but would be interested to know if it would be possible to fill it with fiber to reduce (Or even get rid of) the high pitched noise it makes.
I don’t have great hearing so not the best reference, but I DO know one way to find out… curiosity and experimentation is right up my alley. Thanks for your feedback, comments and support.
@@bowmanoutdoors Pretty stoked if it makes it into one of your videos. Or if not, I would love to know how the testing went. Maybe I will get the Yokozuna if it works well and fill it in myself 👍
Logan is currently out of town, when he gets back we will discuss and think through some experimentation that tries various fill material/methods. If we do, you’ll certainly get a shout out in the video! It’s a fun thought for sure!
I installed the slug power kit with my .25 cal 600mm. I got around 8-10 fps more. The advertised from fx was 50-80fps more in the .25 cal. That is all a lie. You will not get 50-80 fps increase. Fx needs to change their advertised to 10 fps increase so folks can decide if they want to spend $40 on 10fps increase.
Oh my Goodness! I laughed SO HARD when you said, "That's an interesting shape that you drew!" Great shooting Guys!!!!!!!!!😃😃😃 I literally had tears laughing so hard when you shot the chronograph!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I appreciate you sharing and am glad you enjoyed it. Having fun and enjoying this sport is a big part of the objective! Thanks for the feedback and support! 🤣😂
Everyone talk big on the slug power kit. So i purchased one and installed in my inpact. Without changing any setting and just installing the slug power kit, i gain like 5 fps more. That is nothing. Guys dont fall for this crap slug power kit, it does nothing and waste of money and false advertising by fx fan boys.
We didn’t see much improvement either until we started having to mod other things as well. Definitely not much bang for the buck on that one unless it is combined with other items which is just more “buck”. 😀
@bowmanoutdoors if added with other mods I can see a big benefit. But just installing the slug power kit won't get you the 50-80fps extra as advertised. More like 5-10 fps max. Ted also experienced the same. He said folks who claim they got 50fps plus are probably not lining up the transfer port correctly to get the full power. If you line your pellet prob port correctly with the transfer port, you should get close to what the pin prob (power kit).
The rubber ball shuts your valve faster, not leaving it open longer. The slug power kit also comes with a weaker hammer return spring with that rubber ball, which it doesnt do much anymore, so leave the rubber ball in there to dampen the hammer rod.
I got 23 fps faster with my 25 cal. 150 bar. So I can use the lowest hammer setting to get what I was getting at the highest hammer setting. I also used the Huma v2 transfer port to get that 23 fps faster. I will use less air, less fill ups and be able to use heavier slugs now. So worth it to myself.
That’s about right. Adjusting the time would result in better results but the goal was to eliminate variables to see the impact of only the barrel. It also cost me some accuracy at the range I typically shoot so I wouldn’t make the purchase next time for me personally. In this case I already made the purchase so….. 700mm is my preference 🤙🏼
My dad has the challenger .357 standard long (little AEA nine ) anyways, He don't have the barrel shroud and we need to know the thread size on this gun. Can't find that info anywhere. I wanna buy this thing for him for xmas. Anyone know>?
dB is a logarithmic unit of measure, 1 dB lower is equivalent to 3 times quieter, so 1 dB might look like a small improvement but it is a significant improvement in loudness
If there is anything I learned from this it’s that I know very little about how sound works other than there was a significant improvement when using the DonnyFL moderators. They did the trick as I am sure other manufacturers do as well. Thanks for the guidance and feedback!
Probably shouldn’t watch our other ones then. We probably aren’t the style you prefer. We are going to continue having fun, sarcasm, and silliness in our videos. Thanks for the feedback though
Currently in Georgia, and also in Texas they are not illegal. Technically they are not installed on a firearm as there isn’t currently legislation for air rifles specifically. If you install the moderator on anything other than an air rifle, you would be violating several regulations. I would suggest looking into your local (state) laws if you have concerns. Great question and thanks for your feedback/support.
On a similar note, we once had someone report us to the sheriff while shooting in our backyard. (Within an HOA). Sheriff arrived, inspected things, then spent the next 45 minutes shooting with us. We had a lot of fun and some great conversation.
Regardless what anyone says about “it’s what you do with it” size always has an impact on performance in some way. 😂 Thanks for the laugh and for your feedback and support!!!
