Charles Hornady said in one of his old loading manuals, if a Man could get a. 177 caliber pellet running 5,000 fps, you could drop an Elk with it, Great video thumbs up
I’d agree with that statement assuming a well placed shot, and clearly Mr. Hornady is much more knowledgeable and experienced than I. Thanks so much for the feedback and encouragement. Appreciate you!
I see you guys haven't uploaded in 7 months, are you planning on making more videos? I enjoy the laid back, normal straight talk and your Father/Son relationship. Please don't stop now, I just subscribed lol... Thanks for all you have made so far, definitely hope to see more!!!
We were just talking about that yesterday. Yes, we plan on more videos. A bit of transition as Logan graduated and started his career but things are stabilizing and we are planning on getting back to it. Thanks you for the encouragement and support! 🤙🏼
Great video guys! Just sub'd! So I ran a similar test with the .35 cal over on UpNorth Airgunner, but what I have found is that barrel length matters more to utilize longer barrel dwell time by runing heavier ammo at higher pressures. With other big bore airguns unregulated the valve is often held open longer with the backpressure of the slug in the barrel. Since you are running a relatively light weight projectile for that caliber it might be leaving the barrel so quickly it can't build up that barrel pressure. Try running that same test with some 45 grain to 50 grain slugs at a high reg pressure. Again - great video and I love the ending. I have a few Caldwell "4 pointers" hung in my gun room as trophies too. They taste a little game-y but make for great wall hangers! LOL!
Awesome information and thank you for the suggestions. I’ll head over to your channel and show some support your way too! I’m looking at some AVS slugs to test in heavier projectiles, then realized I’m going to have to “slug” The barrel and measure so working that out now! Who knew how fun and exploratory (expensive) this could all be, but worth it to learn and spend quality time with my son! (Who showed no mercy in making fun of my “accuracy” in putting that Slug right in the numbers!!! 😂 Thanks so much for the support!
Wow, just wow! You make such amazing, informative, videos! Impressive and a standard we strive to! You are an advocate and great advocate for this sport! 🙏🏻
Got a good laugh from chrono lol. I shot mine back in the summer with a 5.56. Afterwards I broke down and bought the new FX radar and love it. So easy to use just sit it on the table next to me.
Absolutely. The FX radar is super easy. I’m curious how the green 2 chrono will work 😀. Turns out once to shoot them, they don’t work so well. Thanks for sharing and I do feel a bit better than I’m not the only one to have done this
Oh my Goodness! I laughed SO HARD when you said, "That's an interesting shape that you drew!" Great shooting Guys!!!!!!!!!😃😃😃 I literally had tears laughing so hard when you shot the chronograph!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I appreciate you sharing and am glad you enjoyed it. Having fun and enjoying this sport is a big part of the objective! Thanks for the feedback and support! 🤣😂
"Do longer barrels matter?" Yes and no. It depends what you're trying to achieve. Longer barrels will generally net you more velocity at a lower pressure- i.e. more efficiency. Typically, you CAN get the same velocities with shorter barrels, but you'll be spending more air to do it (it'll also be louder). In both cases, there's limitations. There's a point of diminishing returns with barrel length- i.e. too long, and you're doing more harm than good. With short barrels, depending on the projectile you're trying to launch and the target velocity, you may not have enough barrel to get there. It's all a balancing act.
You are correct. A balancing act indeed. The longer barrel also leaves the slug in contact longer so movement is the shooter or system plays a larger role. I found out I’m less accurate with the longer barrel when I thought accuracy would be improved. Thanks for the comment and feedback
Thanks for sticking with us. The next one won’t be so delayed. Life, school, work, etc caught up with us but it’s all getting back in balance. Stay tuned and thanks for the support!!!!
Since you guys both have that rail under the bottle, it might be worth getting a mount to put your chronograph there instead of on the barrel. Then you could check accuracy at the same time since it won’t mess with barrel harmonics from it hanging there. Nice rifles, I think they’re both setup well. Makes me want to pick up an M3 and sell my old one.
Thanks for the compliments and support. You are correct. I’m actually thinking about upgrading chronographs to one that would not be mounted and would be for all our firearms. If we don’t upgrade, a mount is definitely needed. Thanks for the support and feedback.
Thanks! It has about the same feel but slightly thinner and the ST grip is slightly more narrow at the bottom. With the added adjustable thumb rest that is included, it is much more comfortable.
I've shot my Chronograph probably 15 times. But they all skimmed off the top and didn't do any damage, you are in no way the first to do that. It's a very easy thing to do because of the bore / scope plane discrepancy. I also wanted to mention the first shot you took at 958, and left it out as an outlier, is something you need to consider normal. When you shoot the air and plenum get really cold, so when the gun sits, that air gets back up to ambient temperature and obviously becomes more pressure. So, the cold regulated air left in your plenum, once warmed back up. is actually a higher pressure than it should be, and it becomes slightly harder for the valve to open. So the reason I say you should consider it normal, is because if you are hunting, it's the first shot that matters and so you need to figure out how to correct for this without taking a few dry fires. Maybe 2 clicks more hammer spring or something, but you get what I'm saying. You said you were thinking about lubing slugs, I lube all my ammo. I use a bowl with a cloth draped over it that is pretty saturated in super lube, food grade silicon, and poor the whole tin in and roll it around like you are panning for gold, keep the cloth sort of tight so to make it like a trampoline. This puts a very even coat of lube and gets off any of the lead dust or flakes.
Again, only for hunting purposes, because you aren't going to scare a target away with a dry fire, but it almost makes sense to have a separate first shot Strelok profile based on an average of first shot velocities. At 140 yards, my first shot, when the gun has sat for a day or 2 or more, hits the ground 2 feet in front of my dropdown target. Thats never going to be a hit without figuring this issue out. This would get me in the ballpark of knowing what I need to do anyhow. It's literally the exact opposite of a cold bore shot since you are warmest on the first shot, and cooling down the more you shoot.@@bowmanoutdoors
Presuming the valve adjuster was set properly for the 700mm, with all other settings being the same, it needs to be opened a bit more to maximize the 800mm.
I agree but we didn’t want to skew results or introduce variables if we could prevent it. We may test again at higher pressure or perform additional testing to determine additional performance criteria. Thanks for the information and comment
Thank you two. I've been wondering what that 800mm .25 barrel does for a while now. I'm wondering if you'll get a bigger increase with a higher reg pressure and more hammer?
We do have the tungsten hammers installed. We could run that test if it would be helpful for you. We have them turned down as it was the best area for accuracy and to stay clear on the transonic zone. Now I’m curious of the results of your question… I know what I’ll be experimenting with next 😂
@bowmanoutdoors I'd love to see it. I currently have the 1st stage reg delete in mine, with the reg set at 160 bar shooting a 50 grain at 995 fps with 3.7 on the hammer. It's a laser.
@bowmanoutdoors I love it. People don't realize, but I get a maximum spread of 14 fps with 45 shots. I use the 700cc tank, though. A lot of people assume you get a crazy extreme spread, but you don't. The 1st stage reg holds the gun back if you want more power and a faster plenum refresh. It's a lazer, too. I use AVS .253 44, and 50 grain boattails.
@dougiefresh3767 that’s great information. Wow you shoot much heavier than we do, but this just maybe my next experiment. Looks like we are going to do lube/no lube video next, but I’ll add the reg delete to the list. I’m now curious! 😀
Smart kid, Velocity is speed with direction. You should refer to the speed of the pallet as speed, not a velocity. Btw, most of the settings that the dad read out were pointless. The big wheel setting means nothing, as the micro wheel setting covers the whole range of hammer spring tension, so only the reading from the micro wheel makes any difference. Also, the front reg reading doesn't mean anything either when it comes to pellet speed, the only thing it controls is how quickly the second regulator fills up!
Thank you for your feedback and comments. BTW, most of what I say generally is pointless 😂. You are also correct about both the 1st reg only being there to fill the power plenum and about the micro-wheel. Thanks again for your support and feedback. 👍🏻
On my particular gun it was 42 clicks (4.2 mils) at 35 yards but with the large/heavy moderator. I typically run a bit smaller/lighter moderator for that (and accuracy) reasons. Good point we should have covered. Thank you!
20 bar difference is just recommended from somewhere!?!? If we go too different the pressures take too long to stabilize but that might be in my head. I’ll do some tests and find out!
@@bowmanoutdoors A 40-50 bar difference refills the plenum faster than a 20-30 bar difference. FX says a 30 bar difference is more precise (lower Standard deviation) I go more towards 50 bc the ob of the 1st reg to take a little pressure off the 2nd reg. So 300 bar from my bottle, I let my 1st reg take roughly 100 bar off (I have it set to 210) and 2nd reg to 160 which it handle just fine. I may get a Huma reg bc it has a brass piston and can handle up to 200 bar.
Wow, you run much higher pressures than we are currently. We have the Huma-Air high pressure Reg installed but haven’t run either that high. Did your shot count drop drastically? Good thing about FX is I can adjust to closer to your pressures and if it doesn’t work, back them back where I am at. Still have to keep it backyard friendly so I don’t hack off all the neighbors again. (Tannerite, funny story 😂)
@@bowmanoutdoors I stsrted w the 600mm barrel and the 480cc bottle but I wanted more power (bc I prefer heavy slugs for the higher bc) so I upgraded to the 700mm barrel (bc the 800mm wasnt out for .25 cal yet) and the 700cc bottle. Yes, the shot count still sucks but OK bc it is a 300bar bottle.
You are right, but I’d rather much quicker fills. May tinker with Reg 1 to allow more air out of the bottle. Thank you for watching and for your suggestion! 🙏🏻
It can and will be much better. We need to re-tune our setup and test various slugs with the new barrel length. It’s a process, and each time we make a major change to the system, we end up re-tuning and going through the whole process again. Thank you for your question and support!
Absolutely correct. We never shoot groups for accuracy with the chrono on the barrel. It’s amazing how much moderators, Chronograph or other seemingly minor variables have on impact accuracy! Thanks for your input
This particular model runs about $2000 but then we added accessories and optics, upgrades, etc over the last year. Great question and I’ll try to capture full build out cost.
Regardless what anyone says about “it’s what you do with it” size always has an impact on performance in some way. 😂 Thanks for the laugh and for your feedback and support!!!
That’s about right. Adjusting the time would result in better results but the goal was to eliminate variables to see the impact of only the barrel. It also cost me some accuracy at the range I typically shoot so I wouldn’t make the purchase next time for me personally. In this case I already made the purchase so….. 700mm is my preference 🤙🏼
Omg i stopped watching halfway the video... how can you have this spread and still want to make a video about barrel comparison. Please first get your regulators fixed and the proper ammo. For the try i give you guys thumpsupp, for the results thumpsdown !! Keep shooting anyway !!
