With espresso; How can a mixture of light & DARK roast work?, when they both REQUIRE a totally different grind!, for them both to achieve a correct & proper extraction! IF you like the taste of a MIXTURE of DARK & light roast (which is delicious!), you must make a double-shot of espresso & mix them together after extraction!, making 1 shot of each, adjusting the grind as necessary for proper extraction!, then mixing them together after extraction., yielding a delicious cup of espresso!
knock - after 2 years, lol... - clear explanation, of course the definition of siphon is a little altered in this context - siphon usually involves moving materials under gravitational potential action from a top vessel to a lower one - up and over the edge of the upper vessel (with liquids exhibiting low surface tension, usually require a continuously filled "leak free" path through (throughout the "sub atmospheric" pressure length at least). (Some liquids self siphon - high surface tension - and some solids can siphon too (chains) - air pressure plays no part in these materials.) The vacuum infuser uses modified vapour pressure to lift the liquid and then the cooling vapour created a pressure differential causing / allowing the liquid to return. The vapour to atmospheric pressure differential causes a faster and more complete return of the liquid to the lower chamber resulting in less water remaining in the coffee than gravitational potential fighting surface tension achieves in a drip extraction method. Not really a siphon, but I think we all accept the common use of the term... In 2024 I recently picked one up (not a historical coffee geek, but totally in with chemistry-lab style glassware) - as it was cheaper to purchase an economical version than travel vast distances to experience the "experience" - NB, enough of a geek to think it would be fun - a steel filter has given me less filter bypass. (I have also used a pre-ground espresso coffee I happened to have - and the fines in the cup afterwards are very low - similar to a fine pour-over - with drier resulting grounds).. Experimenting is fun - those who don't like experimenting probably don't cook much either.
I use a siphon brewer from the 1930s and I love it. The carafe is actually pretty easy to clean - fill it halfway with warm soapy water, take a paper towel and stick it in, hold it in one hand and the other over the opening - shake it baby - pour content out and rinse with clean water.
What a crock of crap, all of these freaking Millennials and people that live in United States cannot figure anything without their electronic bulshit, and all their grams and Metric crap, doesn't anybody know about cups and ounces and teaspoons or tablespoons.
Ok but why does it have to be coarse? Why can’t we just buy regular ground coffee and filter it with coffee paper? 🤷♂️ . Wouldn’t it just speed up the process ? Whats the reason.
vodka is like 40-45% ethanol right? 90 proof or something.... that's 45% way too much water to fuel any kind of flame. I think even 70% rubbing alcohol is slightly too weak - you need the 91%-99% isopropyl. or I guess everclear which is 95% ethanol (190 proof). liquor seems way too expensive to burn like that though. alcohol lamps are kinda weird sometimes too - they can be unpredictable and occasionally just catch the whole exterior of the lamp on fire for no clear reason... or maybe that's just my experience because I’ve always made them myself and I might not know what I’m doing.
just purchased an ode gen 1 new on amazon for $199. i’d argue it’s a fantastic value with a set of burrs that will last a long time and provide a noticeable difference in taste since i’m used to buying coffee at costco and grinding it in advance. i appreciate what you have to say about the other burr sets, but i disagree with the notion that the gen 1 burr sets are terrible. When the ode 1 came out a few years ago the coffee community was all about the Ode and everyone enjoyed their coffee. nobody had negative things to say. it’s only now that there’s a new set of burrs out that people want to complain about the old ones
Reminds me of how we made coffee over the campfire with a blue enamel percolation pot - works via siphon too but constantly cycles the water through the coffee.
Do not buy. Had mine for a 2 years, I used to be super sensitive to coffee and didn’t use it much for the first year (present from Christmas). I started using it more and then something came apart inside and it stopped working. I didn’t even reach 400 uses and the warranty said they couldn’t help me, their warranty says 1 year or 3000 brews. They kept saying since it’s past 1 year they couldn’t help, even with such little use. Luckily my husband and his brother were able to fix it up themselves and a connection came loose that they found. Next machine will be a Breville because terra Kaffe customer service is awful. They were trying to make me pay for the repairs, I read online that some customers sent their machine in for repairs before and it would come back with more problems…
What a great review, thanks. I was thinking of buying this model as an entry-level machine, because it certainly feels affordable, but I'll probably wait for the next version. Thanks again for a serious and informative review. You have gained another subscriber.
I've had a Siphon Coffee maker for a few years and was never satisfied with the coffee.. well lets say I was using it wrong.. duh! Watched your video and brewed a wicked cuo of coffee.. ordered a bugane burner already.. cheers. 🤘
Thanks for this info. Since I'll be weighing my water on the scale, grams works well for me, too. There are a few things which I haven't been doing with my pour over which I learned here, so I'm grateful.
just a heads up for people who want to only drink from glass. in the switch your coffee is sitting in a little basin made of silicone when the switch is closed. So keep that in mind, I returned mine because of it..
Though, if you're making a concentrate you might as well just use hot water, steep for 10ish minutes to taste, then dilute with cold filtered water and ice cubes. Saves having to leave it overnight. This is just an immersion cold brew but using the Aeropress as a container which I'm not sure is great for the device.
