I really appreciate your efforts in testing the burrs. This is exactly what I needed to decide which burrs to purchase (or not). Initially, I was going to buy the 2nd gen grinder and the SSP burrs. Now, I am going with the 2nd gen grinder with the 2nd gen (default) burrs. You saved me about $200. I think the SSP burrs might not be noticeably different from the default gen 2 grinder burrs, for me and my coffee preferences ; mostly espresso brewing. Your data on this region of grind size indicates almost identical performance using SSP AND gen 2 burrs. THANK YOU! 😃

Thank you for this informative video and well presented results! The Ode 2 looks like a real winner for pour over and similar brewing methods. I am chasing info on burrs for a different project where I am modifying a KitchenAid Proline grinder for cold brew bulk grinding (12-16 ounces). Like you I see much more inconsistent grind size with coarse settings. The info comparing the three different burrs was enlightening. The OEM burrs on the KitchenAid are not great. I have a set of mini Mazzer burrs I will adapt to the KA grinder. Then I plan to get a set of SSP burrs to see how those work and how the range and consistency of the different burrs affect output. So seeing your work was inspiring!

Very interesting comparison. I appreciate seeing the graphs comparing all 3 burr sets. Other reviewers have talked about the differences, but your graphs clearly illustrate the improvement to be expected by upgrading to the Gen 2 burrs. I just placed my order with Fellow. For me, the price increase to the SSP burrs is not worth it according to the graphs you provided. Thanks for the video.

I upgraded to gen2 burrs and my current setup has a lot of less fines and tastes much better. However I hadnt aligned the original burrs and I did an alignment when upgrading so I unfortunately cant say which of the changes brought the most improvement. It is however likely that the alignment would reduce the amount of fines and although it is a hassle I would recommend doing it no matter which burrs one has.

Good test! Even taking the results broadly it's quite clear that Gen 1 Burrs = Hard No Gen 2 Burrs = Good! Comparable to SSP at much better value. SSP Burrs = Great if you already have them, upgrade to Gen 2 burrs if you do not.

Possibly going coarser leads to a less consistent shape of grind, and that can affect sifting as a measurement method, bc it's 2d and grinds are 3d

I've been looking to upgrade my grinder, and the Ode seemed like the perfect choice for me given the price and the fact that I wouldn't use it for espresso.. however, the gen 1 burrs definitely kept me away.. for $345 with the gen 2 burrs, the updated Ode seems like great value... @HomeGrounds Coffee How old is the Ode Gen 1 that you tested here? Did you test the Gen 1 or the Gen 1.1 burr set here?
@carlosfedericolopezspindol3103
I've read that the SSP MP are really hard to dial when compared to the Gen2 burrs? How about consistency? If I do install the SSP MP on the Ode Gen2, how likely is that I'm going to get consistent brews? Another thing I read is that if the roasting has defects, the MPs are going to show it! I think the MPs would be more for analytical tasting and picking good coffee while the Gen2 burrs would be just to be happy and enjoy coffee almost all the time?

@fredbloggs6080
@fredbloggs6080 Год назад
Another reviewer compared the Ode Gen 2, SSP and the Gorilla burrs, in taste tests, and found the SSP had more clarity, and the Gen 2 and Gorilla were fairly similar in having a fuller flavor, except he could distinguish a particular second flavor more with the Gorilla, but I don't know if it's worth $270 extra for the Gorilla, which is the price I saw online. I was wondering, are burrs protected by any type of patents, or even design patents? What is to keep one company from copying another company's burr design?

@DJ-Art-Morris
@DJ-Art-Morris 4 месяца назад
Actually the gen 2 burrset was getting its flowers through out the entire video and it was shown to perform very similarly with the ssp’s which are a fantastic set of burrs. It was the gen one burrset that had the horrible graphs and sub par taste shown in the video. I would urge you to rewatch the video for clarification. Sorry to hear you having issues with your v2, maybe you’re just had really poor alignment out of the box for some reason. If you still have it id recommend manually aligning the burrs because mine has produced really good cups via aeropress straight out the box at the 4 setting with a dark roast i have at home for medium and light roasts I’d probably recommend going finer from there respectively. I just came here to see if I’m making the right decision to chase the diminishing returns of upgrading to the ssp upgrade.
