Regarding Tyla saying she’s colored, I’m South African (but born in America) so I have cultural context and also had to learn myself the difference between colored and mixed. Mixed people (50% one race, 50% another race) are very uncommon in South Africa since interracial relationships were illegal (and honestly, still very uncommon in South Africa to this day from what I’ve seen while visiting). Colored people are a racial group in South Africa, not a derogatory misnomer to describe black people. They’re called colored because for generations, the native African people (the Sans), the European colonizers and black African people mixed and mixed over generations. So colored people don’t have a distinct 50% black or 50% white background. They’re a mix of many races over many generations. Trevor Noah (for example) is an anomaly in this sense, and that’s why his book is called “Born a Crime”- because it was illegal for his white European father to be dating his black mother. He actually explains the term colored very well in his book. Race is a social construct and Tyla shouldn’t be responsible for explaining why a whole racial group is called what it’s called in her home country. I remember seeing the coloreds fighting for the end to apartheid decades ago. They were forced into these categories. It didn’t just include biracial people. Many African Americans would be considered colored over there. Vanessa Williams would be colored. Language is a funny thing. In the UK, for example, a rubber is an eraser and a slur against a gay person is the word for cigarette.
