I can answer that, having been to Japan twice now for 3 weeks each. Yea, there's a language barrier but it's not so bad in Tokyo. There you'll find a fair number of signs in english and a significant enough minority of people who speak english to not struggle too much until you pick up enough Japanese to hold your own on the communication front. Outside of Tokyo it's a different story. All english disappears and you have to work a lot harder to understand others and be understood.
