Ty so much. I am at the point when I am thinking about what heirlooms to hand down . I will be ok if my adult daughters do not want certain things. It is their perogative. And yes, some of us have been the "keeper" of the heirlooms. I am getting more comfortable with letting some go, maybe by selling them.

@Decluttering Club, please let us know HOW to get over “decision fatigue”… last challenge we took a month and cleaned out the garage.. 😳… then? I find it extremely hard to start up again… I thought if I took a few days off, but I think I still have it or something. 😢

If you let someone else make all your decluttering decisions for you, you never learn how to make decisions. Decision making is a muscle 💪 that needs to be flexed and built up with practice. Making yourself dependent on someone else isn't empowerment. I like The Decluttering Club's approach of asking oneself questions, that help one reach decisions.

That's crazy to say a limit on what someone else should have on basics. There are three ifvus here but we have twenty towels. When people visit we ho through them.

Such a cheerful and chipper presentation. The truth is, there's nothing positive about hoarding.

Listen to what Sarah's saying because it's true. When you've filled your home with clutter due to (for example) depression you'll start going out for the day (anywhere!!) simply to avoid having to tackle it. I found myself hoarding due to an horrific menopause and went from a minimal interior to a cluttered one and couldn't figure out why I felt so constrained and lacking in motivation. So one day I filled the car and donated it all to charity: the rest I threw in a skip. And my life started afresh.

That is definitely where I am. I have much improved on some maintenance & letting go of stuff, but I have boxes & files of papers (&other clutter) all saved or bought w a purpose in mind. Still trying to develop the ruthless mindset where I don't have to analyze every single thing. As you say, it's a habit that needs practice to develop.
@kathiler
@kathiler 21 день назад
I wholeheartedly understand the dilemma. I think I have all the symptoms. 😮 I do OK with maintenance for a while and letting some things go, but I still have rooms and boxes full of papers and clothes. My motivation has been shot. Trying to give myself some grace after being divorced this year and still living in the same house that we lived in for over 30 years and having to go back to work full-time. It’s very overwhelming. But I guess I’m not alone.

@@kathileryou are not alone! & Having a significant loss like that really affects you. Be open to support from friends or find someone to help you once a week. & Do things that make you feel good too.

I recently donated 3 bags of clothes to my local hospice thrift store. Specifically I had a slew of very nice skirts I’ve accumulated over the years … except I’ve never worn them - not even once! But every time I open my closet I’d look at them and admire how beautiful they are. I would always put them on and then decide not to wear it. So last week I told myself it doesn’t matter how beautiful they are - if I actually haven’t worn them in 7yrs I need to say goodbye 🥲 Yesterday I went into the shop and saw a few of my pieces on the rack and I didn’t feel sad when I saw them. 😊

A room: 1. Throw away al trash in the room 2. Do the dishes 3. Move all clutter to a box 4. Clean 5. Empty the box I THINK this might work... today

Tip #2 was an A-HAAAA for me!! It’s SO easy to sabotage myself by switching from space to space cuz if I find something that doesn’t belong there, then I MUST go rehome it where it does belong… Soooooo… having this “barrier box” to place those things in until the focus space is completed will absolutely be a game changer for me! Thanks so much! Sometimes we just need to hear a different perspective or idea that can minimize some of our ADHD chaos… Appreciate this!

No need to apologize or explain✨… I’m over 50 and I purposely went online to find a closet declutter RU-vid video that would help me with my needs at this age. I didn’t relate to much of the younger peoples advice. It is different, we are different and have different needs at different ages. That’s a fact of life.!!! Just let them respond in a few years when they’re more mature.

See if you can answer your own question! Follow that thought process. Are you thinking 'I could / should mend this'? Do you have the time to do this? Do you really want to spend your time mending things? Do you want to pay for someone else to mend them? Would you rather spend the time or money on something else? I promise you that it's okay to let things go that need mending.

It’s a little late for this comment, but when you say you you don’t get rid of stuff because it brings up a memory, that you have a wealth of memories and that they will show up for you (about 34:00)-sometimes they don’t, particularly with ADHD. Those memories often feel irretrievable without the reminder, and we are so used to forgetting so much that we have security in keep the thing.

I've been on a weight loss programme for a year, and I can confirm that doing Kitchen Zero makes ALL the difference to staying on plan. Because the kitchen is always clean and organised *enough* at meal times, I can just start cooking instead of having to wash up and clear surfaces first, so I'm less tempted to eat junk food or takeaways because I'm too tired and hungry to do a big clean up job before cooking. I definitely see parallels between weight loss and decluttering. I am getting rid of excess that doesn't serve me in all areas in my life, and it's making life so much better.

i just finished a week long move(because I have way too much stuff) from 1300 square feet to 900 square feet and I have a lot of work ahead of me!!!!!!! I DID declutter a lot, but the new place has exploded and I feel disappointed in myself. That being said, the journey of many miles starts with the first step. It will get better

I used to have a mantra - still have it - "no dirty dishes in the sink". This was before knowing I have ADHD, apparently I knew intuitively I need a pattern, a routine, a plan. Of course it didn't work, still doesn't, but nevertheless 😅

I've been watching home makeover and hoarding problems on TV for years, and knew that I had an issue with letting things go, but until the Decluttering Club came into my life last year, no-one really showed me the nuts and bolts of HOW to declutter, and deal with all the questions and emotions that come up.
