That mesquite is truly gorgeous. Many decades ago, more than I care to admit to. I was a boy in my grandfather's shop, learning from one of the best. Of all the things that he taught me using a wood lathe was one of my favorite things to do with him. As I got older and other things took priority, the lathe slipped away. Grandpa has been gone a long time now. I ran across your videos a few years ago. They brought back a lot of memories that I didn't even realize had been forgotten. They are the reason that I bought my harbor freight lathe and later my powermatic. I can't get on my lathe now without saying hi to grandpa and remembering him thru that boys eyes. Thank you doesn't seem like enough, but thank you so much.

That's a gorgeous bowl. Something you can look at for hours and still see new things. Also, you are so right about the center mass Phil. I do a lot of segmented bowls, and especially on the inside, you have to cut REALLY slowly - there is no center mass. If you try to cut like a normal bowl it will howl and vibrate and look awful. I've even tried wrapping the bowl in a lot of Rubber bands to help damp it down. That kind of works, but you still have to work it really slow with super fin cuts.

Phil, love your work. I am an old woodworker mostly did turnings for balustrades, knewal posts and large columns. And general cabinet and furniture pieces. Now I just build for charity auctions (Make-A-Wish) friends, neighbors and family. Not in business and never charge. They provide the wood. Which takes me to this: my neighbor recently came upon a downed Persian Ironwood tree in Scappoose, Oregon. It is native to the Eastern mountains of Iran and this tree seedling came to America in the late 1800’s. It was a mighty big tree. I have several large cuts of 40” diameter and 6” to 9” thickness. It took 3 of us to move these into my shop. Yikes! Anyhow, I also received a dozen or so tree limbs of 6” to 10” diameter. The wood is very dense with cream color, pink and medium to dark brown accents. Just beautiful. Oh, and the bark has greens, yellows, chocolate - just wonderful. I would love to send you a good sampling for you to turn. Tell me what to do and I will ship a piece to you. Thank you. I really enjoy your work.

What a wonderful bowl this turned out to be Phil. The raw piece of wood at the start seemed to scream out that it wanted to get on your lathe & show what it was made of & the beauty within. In your SO capable hands it was an outstanding success. The shape of the finished piece & the grain are just mesmerising & beautiful. You are an artist & master of your craft mate. Might be late to view your next video, I go into hospital for a short visit to have my Right elbow cleaned out, the Ulna nerve moved & my right thumb fused but I'll catch you soon. Thank you Ted! Really enjoying the burl rays on the outside. And of course, there is a critter with eye and mouth on the inside bottom. Fish or other sea creature? Distorted Pac-man? Will send some honey locust over. Much like Mesquite.

Oh, gosh, that reminds me! I don't think I ever said thank you for the Pine cones! I've thought about it a dozen times but always while doing something else. If I didn't, THANK YOU, Valerie! I've got them drying. 😊

Love everything about this bowl. The color, the pattern and then the live edge. My first thought was to try and make a tray/bowl. I would of tried to save the outside of the burls. Still great piece. Enjoy the rest of your weekend Phil.

Phil, last year while visiting Arizona I found a saw mill and bought a slab of Mesquite that I carried back east in my back pac on the plane. It was bear to cut. I ended up buying a set of carbide tools to get it finished.
