There's no secret honestly. Bait and location are the main thing. I like dragging because I cover a lot of water vs sitting still. But once I find some decent fish, I will run back through them. Fresh bait is key. Only frozen bait I would use is skipjack or hickory shad. So, main keys are bait, rig, and location. And lastly when dragging you're mainly getting a reaction bite.
I'm suspending in this video, but yes I mainly drag the bottom with a Santee rig and 1.5 oz drift weight tied to my 3 way with 12 lb test. That way if my weight snags I don't lose the whole rig. Highly recommend getting some planer boards and messing around with dragging.
I us to fish with an old SGMajor who was a catfishing master he wouldn’t throw one back to save himself ! Really was. Nice to see you release that old gentleman, he was probably older than you . Looked like great fun ,congrats to ya !
Chances are it was older than me and I'm almost 35. It's very important to release the big breeders. The more they weigh the more eggs they produce which means higher fry survival rates which means more good genes put back in the water. Anything over 15 lbs that can sustain itself and has a undoubtedly chance to grow into a trophy I release. Glad you enjoyed the video!
I just can't do the catch and release like some of you do, I wasn't raised that way. I was raised to put food on the table. We love the outdoors and everything the earth provides! I respect you guys, just don't understand the whole catch and release thing, especially with the price of groceries nowadays!
I get the putting food on the table part. And the reason is to let them grow. If everyone kept the fish they caught we wouldn't have any. If I was poor then I would keep more, but I keep about 6 a year. I don't live off of catfish.
Mad respect you have for those dinosaurs. I appreciate you putting them back. I hope one day your actions let my nephews see what catching fish feels like.
We pull flatheads like that out of the Osage river regularly. We seem to have an abundance of these century old monsters in the river around here. Last year my son landed a 103-pound female. He was ecstatic. He also put her back and watched her swim away. She was a beast of a flathead.
This was a blue catfish we don't have flatheads that big here. I'm also guessing you're in Missouri. The Missouri state record flathead is 77 lbs. At 103 that was most likely a blue. Only a few states have even seen a 100+flathead. Great fish tell him I said congratulations
Certain parts of the year like spring and fall big baits are the go to. In the winter and summer I run smaller baits. So you are partly correct on that aspect
YOU DID GREAT BUD , cant you install a bar that helps you to weight the fish ? you just have to hang the basculle on the bar. I'ts just a idea ...@@JonBoatRiverCats
@@JonBoatRiverCats lol it's all good man just messing with ya great catches what water way was they taken from dint give the exact location but like a lake or river name
@@darkmagician9460 Roanoke river on the Virginia side. And thanks man. I know you were kidding but I did leave it at home. I get up at 3 am that time of year to hit the water and my brain is foggy that time of morning lol
@@JonBoatRiverCats lol ok your a ways away from me I'm in Alabama and it looked like the black warrior river close to the house and it sounds like you love hunting and fishing as much as I do you forgot your belt I have been in a hurry to hit the water and tlforgot what the belt holds up and my blue nose pit looks at me like and your the intelligent one 🤣🤣🤣
I use Slime Line from Catch The Fever. And the rod I caught the 94 on was a Patriot Hellcat also from Catch The Fever. If you would like to get one I have a discount code you can use. Use code JBRC10 at checkout and you get 10% off anything on their website. Hope you enjoyed the videos!
I've been wanting to try out the piscifun reels alot of people are saying good things about them but I've noticed that most catfish guys are using the chaos 50 i have a abu garcia 6500 are the 50's about the same as the abu 6500 or would it be better to go with the chaos 60 ? I like the thumbar on the 50's but the 60's doesn't have a thumbar . Nice video bro.
The 50's are great for casting and hold plenty of line if you're doing just that. If drifting I would go with the 60's for more line capacity. And thanks man
Heck yeah! May I ask what size Jon boat? I’m looking into getting a small boat for small river catfishing. Nice fishing!! And love the Hellcat that’s what I have! 😊
It's an old 1542 Jon boat. Would be good for any small river. I love my boat very stable and thanks man I love the big cat fever and hellcats. I'm actually Catch The Fever affiliate now, so if you use discount code JBRC10 on their website you get 10% off of your next hellcat rod. Great rods and great company. Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it!
@@JonBoatRiverCats wow ok cool! I was gonna order more. I got the Patriot and the blue one (Tackle Bandit) Hellcat also. Love them! And thanks again! Fish on!! 💪🏼👊🏼
Great video! Like your channel I bet if you went back to fishing out the little Jon boat your views would go up. Once you went up to the bigger boat it gets watered down with the other 100s of catfish guys watching a bunch of rods at the back of their boat. Just my take on it but I could be wrong.
Yeah that should help. People don’t realize how much work goes into making one of these fishing videos it’s a lot! Hopefully you will be able to upload more in the future especially when it starts to warm up. Good luck and take care
